someone you love more than almost anything in the world, someone sick or injured or elderly—what would you do if saving them meant giving yourself up? can you even imagine having to make that choice?

i can't. but that's the reality for mohammed, and he already knows his answer: he will save his family before himself. he will evacuate his most vulnerable family members from gaza—his sister, still healing from a quadcopter bullet; the sick; those who need to flee most urgently—and he will stay behind if that's what's necessary. 8 displacements, his home destroyed, his job gone, bombs falling around him and his life utterly uprooted, and his first thought is only of helping others.

this is an awful, inhumane, horrific position for anyone to be in. and yet i'm writing this post because so far, he doesn't even have the funds necessary to evacuate his most critically injured family members—let alone to start thinking about himself.
