y'all i think i cracked the most baffling line of dialogue in arcane

"i thought maybe you could love me like you used to, even though i'm different - but you've changed too."

(tbf there are probably a lot of valid interpretations of this line but i finally found one that i'm personally satisfied with)

i think when analyzing anything about jinx we have to remember that she is exceedingly self-focused, like borderline sociopathic in the way that she views everything through a lens of "how does this affect me". is this an unpopular take? idk. but in my opinion she's kinda been like this her whole life. even in the scene where she realizes she just killed her family, everything she says is an "i" statement. "i was saving you." "i only wanted to help." "why did you leave me?" "i need you." it's almost as if her grief is less about her family and more about her own failure. i'm not faulting her for it back then because this is actually a pretty normal way for kids to be, but the trouble with jinx is that she never grew out of it.

so when she says that she doesn't think vi loves her anymore, i don't think it really has anything to do with vi at all, and instead is all about the outcome that vi's love used to have for her.

what would vi loving jinx like she used to mean in jinx's mind? i think the best picture we have of this is from the first episode:

the tl;dr of this scene, specifically from powder's point of view, is that she was feeling down on herself, afraid she could never do anything right, and then vi came along and made her feel better. she knew exactly what to say. she fixed it for her.

and......i think now you probably see where i'm going with this. vi came back, and jinx is suffering more than she ever has. so when she says that vi doesn't love her like she used to, she means that vi has failed to fix her problems, or chase away her monsters. never mind that vi's single goal in life is still to do this for her. never mind that vi still hangs all of her self-worth on her ability to accomplish this. never mind that vi would sacrifice anything in order to do this for her sister.

no matter how much vi still wants to be the person to shield her sister from pain, she can't, not anymore, and so from jinx's perspective she might as well not even be trying.

"i love you but i can't fix this" versus "you can't fix this so you must not love me." an impossible divide to cross.

Caitlyn: You have friends and I envy that.

Vi: You're welcome to share my friends.

Caitlyn: *looks at Jinx and Catra*

Caitlyn: I don't want those.
