You run. The cold is biting. Snow blows into your face, cold flakes clinging to your lashes. Your footsteps become slower, more laborious, your desperate sprint becoming a miserable, uphill trudge. 

You hear him. Twigs snapping. Snow crunching. A step out of sync with yours. Quiet, breathy, anticipating laughter, muffled through winter gear. No one will be there if you look back but you know you’ll die if you stop moving. Howling wind tears at your face. Your ears are burning. Your fingers and toes are numb. Pinpricks of freezing pain skitter up and down your legs.
