OJ and JJ: Why Jean Jacket Let the Haywoods—Especially OJ—Get Away with More Than Anyone Else in “Nope”

I’ve seen Nope twice now. While everyone I saw it with enjoyed it, I heard a few cries of foul when it came to OJ and the others’ improbable good luck with all their near misses interacting with our favorite terrifying gulch-haunting UFO. I call foul back and say plot armor had nothing to do with it. Some luck, yeah, otherwise we’d have no protagonists. But that was hardly all.

Spoilers for Nope below

the parallels between how poc are treated and how animals are treated in nope (2022) was perfect. one of the first scenes in the movie is when oj is on set for a commercial, and i was immediately as uncomfortable as he was. when he introduces himself to the white actress, she looks scared of him because his name is oj. she sees a black man with that name and can’t hide her inner thoughts. then the pa guy is confused as to where the “older one” is, clearly giving the message that he doesn’t trust oj to be a competent person. the pa sees him as an untrained boy, and doesn’t listen when oj tried to tell him not to look in the horse’s eyes. then when em explains the story of the first moving picture, we see that the black jockey and the horse aren’t even on the same level. people talk about the horse, but they don’t know anything about the man riding it.

then, there’s jupe and the gordy the chimp. jupe was a child star in a western comedy, and the poster itself gave me the wrong feeling. jupe and the unnamed black child actor he starred with were so clearly being used as a spectacle. it made me think of blazing saddles, how the idea of a black sheriff is absurd and funny. however, blazing saddles uses that as commentary and as a way to send a message, while in nope, we see that jupe was the victim of a film industry that tokenized him. then, with the chimpanzee, we see that same tokenization. a sitcom of a white family that includes an asian child and a chimp. it’s clear that both are meant to be equally funny; an asian kid is just as absurd as a chimp in human clothes and a birthday hat.

then, when we see him try to use the alien to create the same spectacle he was a part of in his youth, he realizes far too late that he’s made a mistake. that you can’t rely on an animal. his wife makes a comment about how working with trained animals is unpredictable, and we see in his eyes that he knows what’s about to happen. he put his trust in the behavior of a wild animal and now he’s paying the price and feeling the same fear he felt as a child.

Plot twist: A fat protagonist has a compelling arc and stays fat the whole time, because using weightloss to signify personal growth is fucked up and also lazy writing.

warnings: mentions of death, guns, white man (derogatory) angst, (you’ll need a magnifying glass) overprotective!mo, mo talks to Nala more than she talks to you

————

“Mo, you gon’ spoil that baby if you keep on holdin her.” You chuckle as you finish cooking dinner. It had been about three months since you and Mo became parents. It hasn’t been easy, but the experience was truly something special.

“She not botherin nobody. You just sitting with your ma, ain’t that right, Nosey Bug? Mama bein mean for no good reason.” Mo speaks to Nala, their eyes never leaving each other. The more Mo talks to Nala, the more verbal Nala gets.

“Oh please,” you scoff. “Mo baby, come eat.” You finish the dinner and begin fixing a plate for Mo first, then one for yourself.

“Nala ate?”

“Not yet.”

“You gon’ head and eat. I’ll feed her.”

You tilt your head to the side slightly. “Your food is gonna get cold.”

“It’ll taste the same. Y’all eat before me.” Mo placed a kiss on your head before placing Nala down in her crib. “I’ll be right back.” Mo announces as she leaves. You knew where she was going, out back to get milk. She was so serious about being sure Nala was fed, that she purchased a cow AND a goat.

“She don’t need both.” You stare at the animals in your yard, only days after Nala had become a Washington. You knew it was inevitable that Mo would get a source for milk, but two was a bit much.

“Lil Bug likes em both. She told me.” Mo shrugs simply and goes about her day like nothing happened. And she would go get milk for her baby girl everyday since then.

After a while, Mo comes back with a bucket of milk. You tried to find a nursing woman that would give milk, but to no avail. Animal milk was the next best thing, and Nala seemed to be growing just fine.

“Sit down, Mo Baby. I just fed her couple hours ago. I’ll feed her again ma self. You the only one who ain’t eat yet.”

“Will you let me be?” Mo sighs, putting the milk on the counter before approaching you. “You eat that food, and you rest after. I’ll make them dishes and feed Nosey Bug.” She kneels before you, her hands feeling up on your thighs. Mo wouldn’t admit this, but you already knew how protective she was. She would always and forever put you and your daughter above her needs. All she needs is you two, anyway.

“You always workin’” you frown, placing a gentle hand on Mo’s cheek. “I ain’t no housewife. You said you wouldn’t do this alone.”

“Never said you was. I just want it to be… easy.” Mo leans into your touch. “And I’m not alone. Every mornin’ I thank God for wakin me. An’ then I thank Him for you and our little girl.” Mo takes your hand, placing a kiss on it.

“Eat with me.” You demand politely, even offering gentle eyes for Mo. She obliges, taking her chair that is usually across from yours, scooting it next to you. She takes your hand as she eats, squeezing with every bite.

Mo had three weak spots.

Her Honey Bee, her Nosey Bug, and your cooking.

After dinner, you and Mo share a kiss. “Thank you, Honey Bee.” Mo stands up, taking your plate. While Mo began to clean the plates off, you glance over at Nala, who was watching through the slits of her crib.

“You just so curious.” You grin, standing up to go pick up Nala. With her in your arms, you go to the bucket and begin pouring little by little into the glass bottle. It was still quite warm, not too hot to burn. “You see Ma? Tell her to sit down an’ take a damn break.” You speak to your daughter as you begin to feed her through the bottle. You watched carefully, making sure not to over provide with each sip.

“Tell ya Mama that I’m just fine. I’m as tough as a nail.” Mo glances over at the two of you, and stops her cleaning. Oh, how the sight of her girls made her weak in the knees everytime. However, Mo was pulled out of her thoughts when she heard the distant sound of horses approaching. You were so in tune with your baby girl, you didn’t hear a thing.

Mo being Mo, she decides to go investigate. But not without her gun. She walks outside, leaving you and Nosey Bug safe inside.

She approaches a white man on a horse. Mo was always on edge, but now more than ever with her family inside the house.

“You sellin it?” The man gets close, a little too close to Mo, hopping off of the horse back. He couldn’t be older than 20.

“You ain’t got no type of manners? Comin up on my property trying to hassle me out my produce?”

“Just askin, sir. Must’ve been a lot. Who you work for?”

“I don’t work for nobody,” Mo squints, already losing her patience. “I’m free.”

“And you got a house and some cattle?” The man laughs in disbelief. “Well, I find that hard to believe. You colored folk been workin all your lives… but not that hard. You must work for a rich man.”

Mo flinched at the man’s words. “You best get from round here, boy.”

“I want that cow.”

Mo had heard enough. She had never been afraid to use her gun. She pulls it from its holster and holds it right up the man’s stomach. “Listen here, I got a wife and little one inside. I ain’t too fond of killin, especially right in front of them. Don’t be the man t’change that,” Mo growls, her free hand grabbing hold on his shoulder. She already scanned the man, he had no gun, no protection. “I’m free, and I ain’t sellin my damn cattle. Come back here again, and one of these bullets will be dead in your stomach, hear? Don’t come back here, boy.”

Her eyes never leave his. She can see the fear radiating off of him. She shoved him toward the horse, watching him struggle to get on. It was almost entertaining. “Go on, get! An’ don’t come back!!” She shouts as she fires a round into the air.

Now that gets your attention.

“Mo?” You run outside, Nala close to your chest. “Baby, you- Mo?” you stand in front of her, scanning her body for any injury. “What you got your gun for? What happened?” From all of the noise and sudden movement, Nosey Bug begins to cry.

Mo watches the man on his horse until he’s no longer in sight. Her eyes finally find yours, shaking her head. “Don’t matter. You alright?” Mo puts away her gun before she even thinks about touching you or Nala. “Go on inside.” The sound of her baby girl crying breaks her heart.

You go back inside as Mo says, but your thoughts still wander. “Mo.” You say sternly as you sway with Nala in your hands, trying to calm her down. “Shh. Mo, tell me what happened, now. You ain’t shoot your gun in-“

“Ain’t nothing to worry about.”

“Mo, you shot a round!” You raise your voice, still attempting to calm Nala down. You weren’t angry, just concerned. It bothered you even more that Mo wouldn’t tell you what happened.

“And it ain’t nothing to worry ‘bout! Drop it, Y/N!” Mo snaps, a little bit more stressed than she would’ve been. A different side of Mo came out when a threat was posted. She would usually be calm after something like that, but the thought of anything happening to her Honey Bee or Nosey Bug got her seeing red.

Mo didn’t mean it. She didn’t mean to snap at you. She didn’t mean to yell. She didn’t mean to cry. She didn’t mean to call you by your first name. She noticed your demeanor change. Your face fell, and all you did was nod as you hushed Nala, comforting and whispering to her. “Hush now, Bug. You just sleepy.”

Mo watched from across the room, rubbing her face and taking a deep breath. She didn’t mean it. She didn’t mean it. She didn’t mean it.

Mo approaches you from behind, looking down at Nala while her hands find your hips. “I can’t let nothin’ happen to the two of you. You’re all I got, Honey Bee. I ain’t mean to snap on y’like that. An’ I ain’t mean to make you cry, Nosey Bug.” Mo rests her head on your shoulder as Nala calms down and begins to fall asleep. “You my world, you know that? I gotta…” Mo sighs. “You a Washington now. We all one. I can’t risk anything happenin’ t’you. I don’t care how many bullets I gotta shoot… if you is safe, that’s all that matters.”

You listen to Mo, leaning back into her touch. “You gots t’be safe too now, Mo. I need my wife, Bug needs her Mama, you hear?”

“Yes ma’am.” Mo cracks a smile, nodding. Her finger sneaks up, offering it to Nala’s small hand. The baby takes it of course, holding it as she drifts off into sleep.

“I love you, Nosey Bug,” Mo places a kiss on your jaw. “An’ I love you, Honey Bee.”

“I love you, Mo Baby.”
