Meanwhile in 21st century Russia Orthodox activists try to get exhibition of native traditions of Karelians taken down in the name of "protecting the children".
(English under the cut)
"The organizers of an exhibition about Karelian mythology in the Chekhov Central Regional Library in St. Petersburg encountered real persecution on social networks.
According to Tatyana Berdasheva, a senior researcher at the Museum Agency of the Leningrad Region, who participated in the creation of the exhibition, one of the visitors to the exhibition encountered mythology and traditions that were unfamiliar to him and accused the organizers of the cultural event of instilling Satanism. The young man was supported by Orthodox activists who demanded that the exhibition be closed in order to “protect children.” But in the controversy that flared up, many took the side of the exhibition organizers and reminded Orthodox social activists that they live in a multinational country with ancient traditions, including pagan ones.
It is noteworthy that the exhibition about Karelian mythology will end with the celebration of the Day of Kegri, an ancient spirit who patronized livestock and grain crops. In recent years, this holiday is often called the “Karelian Halloween”.
