It's moments like this, where Maddie can just lay on her bed, her 5 year old daughter wrapped in her arms, and look up through the window on the ceiling that she finds the most peace.
The leaves are starting to drop down on top of the skylight, in their usual colorful fashion, indicating another Fall season is upon the world. She can spot how some leaves lay flat against the glass, but the ones that curl up to their center had always been her favorite type because those she can still picture stomping on as a child and hearing them crunch as they disintegrated beneath her feet. She used to laugh so hard as she jumped in a pile of leaves her father made especially for her brothers and her to play in, and how her brother would toss leaves at her before she had a chance to get up and defend herself.
It’s been years since she last played in a leaf pile, years since she last heard that definite crunch followed by blissful happiness. Now, whenever Fall approaches and she hears leaves break under heavy weight, her heart races and she scatters to stuff her little girl in the wardrobe tucked in the far corner before he can make his way into the room—if you can call it that.
Before I give an answer can I ask, did you just stumble upon a group in the middle of the woods randomly?

We love that it’s currently -2°F right now, and I never took my air conditioner out of my window from summer. Now I’m just in bed with 3 blankets on and haven’t moved since I went to bed last night. 🙃🥶❄️
