Mark: Reverence - serves the same purpose as a Jehovah's witness, finds survivors outside of the bunker and coerces them into joining

Thatcher: Hunt - not associated with cult

Dave: unaligned - not associated with cult

slight Jonah x Adam - they're not together, but Adam likes to say so and usually Jonah doesn't argue.

Why are They Here?

After being sent by Elias (who has joint control with Jonah) to monitor the Sanctuary since they're close to completing a ritual, they spend plenty of time at the sermons and with the higher-ups such as Jonah or Sarah. They find themselves thrust into positions they can't handle before they can refuse.

Why are They Here?

After the start of the zombie apocalypse, Melly found herself in a sticky situation. Of course, she had a gun, but no other protection. While wandering into the main room, assuming there were no other survivors, she had her guard down. When she spotted Norton eating at Annie's desecrated corpse, she held her pistol high, aiming at his head. Could she really do this? It wasn't like she had much of a choice. But she shook, missing and hitting him in the shoulder instead. When it was discovered that part of his brain was still functioning and he could talk, the entomologist calmed down and tried to take him outside. She'd just have to take extra precautions. It wasn't too long, however, until she ran into a woman dressed in heavy layers. Her hand was on her gun, ready to shoot in case it was a zombie, but of course not. Despite that, however, Norton, who felt threatened by the spear on her back, attempted to lunge. An armed Jonah came forward, pointing one at Norton and one at Melly. Communication occurred, and Melly is allowed in on certain circumstances.

TL;DR; Norton is a half-conscious zombie, Melly narrowly missed his head, and they went outside in search of supplies. They found Jonah and Sarah, being taken into the Sanctuary long before the archival staff.

but like it's never gonna become an actual thing since I have no idea where to go with it plus I always abandon my aus BUT

Au where Jonah is a ghost and Adam killed him, and he's very pissed about it (and also the fact he never cared for him and their friendship was one sided) so he haunts hims and follows him around and shit while Adam thinks he's just an illusion/alternate and he doesn't remember what he did

I wanna add onto this I love thinking abt Adam

This man hadn't cared about a single person in his life (except his mom, probably), but when Jonah died he finally felt something, remorse.

He is an asshole I'll be honest but I love him sm for that 😭😭

As an alternate he subconsciously tries to get the strongest reaction out of people, and then complains when they're rude to him back. He also sees people (Sarah, Jonah) as overly-sensitive because they'd react negatively to half the things he did, even though that half was literally hating on everything they did-

And he does feel emotions, is drawn to negative ones.

But when he listened to Jonah's screams then, in the basement, instead of feeling the same satisfaction he'd had whenever he got a negative reaction out of people, he felt guilt. He's the reason for his death, the reason for the person who'd tried to save him from the fate he's now doomed to follow.

Hot take :33 (not really)

Saying that Adam didn't do anything wrong OR saying that he's evil and the worst person in the series (in a /srs way) are both god awful takes that erase everything that makes him interesting as a character.

He's absolutely not a good person (well for that matter he's not even a person). He is an asshole, apathetic and treats his friends god awfully. He's done genuinely bad things, like traumatizing Sarah and Evelin and not caring for Jonah's death. There's no need to defend his actions. I've seen people use the fact that he's an alternate to defend him but like. EXACTLY. He's an alternate, his actions CAN'T be defended because THAT'S WHAT HE'S MADE TO DO. And yes while it is understandable, it's not an excuse.

HOWEVER

He's still a victim too. (Which I find ironic, what was supposed to be the predator is a victim of his own kind). He was replaced as a child, 4 years old. The only human memories he had were probably the image of his hanged mother, maybe that's why he's so obsessed with finding what happen to her, she's the frist memory he had as human. And he's constantly being tormented by Six Gabriel, and to a lesser amount Preacher. He learns a truth that he never wanted to know, that he isn't Adam Murray, just a demon wearing his face,not the hero of the story just an unwitting pawn to the alternates and Gabriel's plans. And he is DISTRACTED by that information. His bones are broken, he very likely attempted suicide, and he's begging to be killed due to how much pain he's in.

On top of that he's really not evil.

Compare to an actual alternate. He's not ANYWHERE near as terrible as they are. He's an asshole sure, but he doesn't go out of his way to steal people's identities, stalk them and psychologically torture them until they kill themselves. He hasn't killed anyone (?)..and that's good.

ALSO

He has the potential to be good I won't lie.

He's hurt people, but I don't think it was really on purpose. Kind of. It's complicated to explain but I think that he doesn't mean to go as far as he did, like he knows he's an asshole but he just doesn't think he's hurting people just that badly. Is the best way I can explain it. But now he knows what he is and what he's capable of. Maybe he will learn to keep himself under control.

Also he's genuinely capable of feeling regret. According to his own diary; hearing Jonah's screams during his final moments made "[him] feel bad in a way [he's] never felt before" and that's important, VERY important, because:

1: he's an alternate, he shouldn't be feeling things like sadness and regret (both of which he's been shown capable of feeling and expressing)

2: alternates are thrilled to the sound of humans screaming, so he feeling guilty because it was JONAH'S screams makes me question if he really hated him in the frist place or if he had just convinced himself that he did.

Stop trying to defend the undefendable!! Stop villiantizing a character who's not necessarily good!!! Morally complex characters exist stop seeing everything in black and white!
