I love how, over the course of the Nibelheim Incident, Seph goes from this quiet, solitary tragic fallen hero to a smirking, smug-ass chucklefuck forever after. Talk about a complete 180.

I’d just like to remind y’all that Sephiroth says the words “take care” in Crisis Core. Like, 1/25 teachers I’ve had in my school career have ever said that! He also specifically informs Zack that the clones are attacking the slums, evidently knowing that he would want to protect Aerith *gross tissue noises*. Sephiroth’s morality is underrated. Despite everything that we can piece together about his childhood/his upbringing by Hojo, he still does everything he can to spare the lives of his deserter friends and to aid Zack when needed. He genuinely is (was…) a good person, which makes Nibelheim just STING to me (I couldn’t tell you why I care more about the murderer than the child who was shaken into PTSD, except I absolutely could). I love you, you adorable Oreo warriiioorrrr! 🥺

The stupid "Sephiroth, have you lost weight?" line in Crisis Core gets me legit upset. We know it's not a teasing line because the Japanese translation was "haggard".

Sephiroth wasn't eating. The man who would burn villages and bring untold suffering on the planet wasn't eating because he was upset and worried about his friends.

Whatever you think of Seph, no matter how incredibly evil and irredeemable he is now, at one point in his life, he was just a soldier with two friends who he loved dearly. Friends who he loved enough to go against the company that raised him. Friends who he was low-key essentially committing treason for. Friends that ultimately tipped him over the edge.

The horrifying thing is that Sephiroth genuinely thinks he's the hero of the story. He acts maliciously because humans, as far as he believes, are little more than livestock. Years upon years of being depersonalized and witnessing firsthand how deceptive and cruel humans can be pretty much conditioned him to hate the human race entirely, despite unwittingly being one himself.

Sephiroth thinks he's the good guy, retribution to a cruel world, a traitorous world, using himself as a vessel to achieve what he feels is the right thing to do for both the planet and Jenova. People no longer matter. Who he was before no longer matters. None of it meant anything other than a lifetime of pain, uncertainty, and a lack of identity.

Sephiroth thinks he's the hero, but at the end of the day, he's only another pawn that began with the Jenova Project. Everything led him to what he'd eventually become without the sense of mercy or safety required to deescalate his hate and distrust when he could still be considered a decent person.

He's not a god or an angel. He's only a mad experiment that never had a chance to be or know anything else.
