WICKED GAME

WICKED GAME

pairing. neteyam x fem!reader

summary. the battle between the sky people and na'vi had finally ended. you stay seated in your disassociating state, while your lover, neteyam, stays by your side.

warnings. mentions of killings/death, violence, blood.

WICKED GAME

"the world was on fire, no one could save me, but you."

that being the only thing you were able to mutter under your breath, after who knows how silent you were before. you were sat on beneath a palm tree, your head resting on the base of the big plant. beside you, there sat a dark blue na'vi. a na'vi that felt tired and exhausted, just as you were.

it had been hours since the war with the sky people had happened, but there, you two sat slouched. it may have been victorious to some people, to others, it didn't.

"we have to go, yawne [beloved]. they may be looking for us." neteyam whispered to you.

giving him no attention, you kept looking forward at the sight in front of you. ignoring the continuous bleeding on your arm, but giving attention to the darkness that was beginning to surround the fire blazing ship that sunk slowly. parts of your island had small flames slowly dying while the sea killed it off. your busted lip arose, a small side smile painting your face. unconsciously smirking, neteyam looked at you confused.

images from before flood your mind. all the warriors who had come together to fight against the sky people. you being one of them. you remember exactly how you were able to save one of your siblings from a gunshot that was blown behind them. you remembered how you forcefully dragged one of your friend's unconscious body, taking them to where a spot where all the healers in the village hid. you remembered everything. especially the death of your father.

if only neteyam was able to do something and heal the broken heart you had. the scream of pure pain and agony you let out, while squeezing the head of your father between your chest and arms. you yelped in pain, nowhere near phased with the blood that didn't belong to you staining your stomach and legs.

the spear you previously had beside you when you grieved your father's death was soon found connecting an avatar's forehead with the walls of the ship. any avatar that came your way, well attempted, was instantly killed. the pain you felt was turned into rage. that rage now turned to numbness. overstimulation. emptiness.

all the while when you felt the world around you was unfair. when fire surrounded you, trying to burn you inside out. neteyam was there for you. the first to run to you when you grieved. the backup you never knew you needed, when an avatar tried shooting you from the back while you were too busy fighting off one in front you, neteyam was there for your back, literally.

your mind was blank. where had all this come from? out of your whole 16 years of life, your simple metkayina life was full of love and kindness. but when the sully's had seeked refuge and brought their war along with them, you started going through it all. going through emotions you never knew existed. never once in your simple life had you thought you were able to mercilessly take one's life with no hesitation. never once in your simple life you had thought you were going to find love. never once in your simple life you had thought you were going to be the one carrying your dead father's body back to land.

neteyam. although still young, you both knew you were destined for each other. despite your deep love for him, a small part of you in the back of your mind had anger about him and his family. how they had unintentionally brought their war along with them, killing your father. but you also knew they never meant to. they were a family who was trying to escape. and in that family, you met their mighty warrior. he saw you in many ways others couldn't. he saw the way your eyes shine when coming across an aquatic, small creature. he saw the way your lips turned into a soft smile when playing with tuk. you loved him with your whole being.

but you also loved your father. you could never love another, the way you loved your father. but you learnt that the sea gives and the sea takes.

coming to your senses, you turned to face the dark blue na'vi. leaning your head against his shoulder. even after all that happened right in front of your very own eyes, you found your peace with neteyam, him finding the same. you two sat in silence, watching the dark scenery in front of you.

sliding your fingers together with your mate's fingers, you let out a sigh of relief. a sigh of peace, more likely. you turned your head to the boy you relaxed on, observing how neteyam's cheeks darkened. your gaze was deep, full of admiration. to you, neteyam's beauty was shining brighter. to you, he was perfect. so perfect, you couldn't give him anything but love. and you showed that exactly.

pulling away from his shoulder, both of your palms were on both sides of your mate's face. swiftly, connecting his lips with your own. perfectly moulded together, with no sign of disconnecting. once you both pulled away, neteyam smiled down at your face. your drunk-in-love gaze falling on him, and him only.

"i see you, ma y/n." he muttered under his breath, his eyes trail every feature painted on your teal toned face.

bringing him down to your level by pulling him by the back of his neck, you pecked his lips once more.

"i see you, ma neteyam."

hale (pt. 2 | n.s.)

summary: tompa takes on the task of teaching the older sully boy how to ride an ilu, but the night doesn’t quite end how they expect.

pairing: metkayina!oc x neteyam

Hale (pt. 2 | N.s.)

The kids watch Tompa as she jumps into the water with a squeal. Tsireya, Rotxo, and Aonung jump in behind her. Neteyam and Lo’ak look at one another, then run in time with each other. They make a big splash and their sisters follow in behind them with excited screams. Tompa watches the four explore the ocean with wonder in their eyes. Tompa uses her hands to guide a creature in their direction and they watch in awe as it allows her to change its course. Lo’ak reaches for it, but it quickly turns away from him. Both boys suddenly go a little wide-eyed, then swim up to the surface as fast as they can. They peek their heads back under the water and Lo’ak shrugs a little when he notices the staring.

Tsireya signs ‘swim together with us’ to the boys and they shrug again. Tompa makes a ‘come here’ motion with her arm and dives deeper, making her way next to Tsireya. The boys go back up for a breath and begin following. They follow the group for less than a minute before the slight panic flashes on their faces again. They point up, frantically swimming to the top to gasp for air. Tompa abandons her usual swimming group and resurfaces with the newcomers. They pant at the surface and she looks at them both, observing their reactions as the other Metkayina surface behind her.

“Are you alright?” she asks.

“You’re too fast! Wait for us,” Tuk whines.

“Just breathe. Breathe,” Tsireya says, trying to reassure the three Sully children.

“You are not good divers,” Aonung says, “Maybe good at swinging through trees, but--” Tsireya pushes her brother’s head so he stops speaking.

“Come on bro,” Lo’ak says, sounding very tired already.

“We don’t speak this finger talk, guys. We don’t know what you’re saying,” Neteyam says, making a gesture with his hands.

“We will teach you guys,” Tompa says, looking at Tsireya who nods in agreement. Rotxo begins to ask for Kiri, causing the group to look around for the girl. “She couldn’t have gotten very far.”

“We should find Kiri,” Rotxo insists.

“Kiri’s fine,” Lo’ak says, “She’s off being… Kiri.”

The next few weeks go about the same. The group of Metkayina teens try to teach the group something, Kiri is usually gone “being Kiri” (as Lo’ak puts it), but the others are always there ready to learn.

Tompa takes the day off, but hears her name being called out by Aonung regardless. She lets out a groan, head flopping to the side. Her slumber fades away the more her name is called out. She stands, stretching and making her way outside. She jumps into the ocean, the chill water waking her immediately. Her body glides through the water and she stops when she meets with the group.

“Need my help already?” she taunts, smiling evilly at the boy.

Aonung rolls his eyes, sighing in defeat, “Yes. Yes we do. I need you to help teach these skxawng--”

“You can leave now, Aonung,” she says, splashing water in his direction. The two ilu swim up to her, bumping her gently and she giggles. She greets them with pats on the head as they both try to fight for Tompa’s attention. She shoos them, telling them to approach the Sully boys. Tsireya swims to Lo’ak’s side, which tells Tompa to help Neteyam. She gestures to the ilu, “Show me what you got, Sully.”

She grabs the ilu’s kuru as Neteyam climbs onto the animal. He looks at her with a nervous expression, “This has not been going well for Lo’ak and I.”

She can’t help but giggle at the boy. “Just breathe, Neteyam. Gently make the bond when you are ready.”

He nods and takes a deep breath, pulling his braid to the front of his body. The pink tendrils meet with those of the ilu, and Neteyam gasps gently. His eyes blow out wide and Tompa reminds him to feel the shared breaths with the ilu, the strength of the creature. He seems to calm down a little more with every word, less tense than when he first got on top of the creature. She guides his hand to hold on and he looks at her through lidded eyes. Tompa quickly looks away from him, pulling her hand to herself.

“Hold on and go when you’re ready,” she says. Before she can think of anything else to add, the ilu takes off with Neteyam holding on. It starts off rough, Neteyam barely able to hold on with the speed. Then the ride smooths out and Neteyam visibly calms down. He and the ilu glide smoothly through the water and she smiles proudly at how easy it was to teach the boy after Aonung couldn’t do it.

Tompa calls out for an ilu, a familiar female sliding up to her side. She makes the bond and grabs on, the ilu takes off after Neteyam quickly. She stays next to him, watching as Neteyam explores the ocean on the ilu’s back.. The two glide as if they are flying through air, the feel of the cool water rushing around them both. They ride together for what feels like forever, until he has to go back up for a breath.

“Woah,” he says, looking around as he breathes in deeply.

She smiles at the boy proudly, “You did so well, Neteyam.”

“I guess I just had an amazing teacher,” he says.

She rolls her eyes at him, “Well I had a determined student. And you held your breath much longer than before!”

“Yeah. I don’t know what it was,” he says, “I just felt so calm down there.”

“That’s exactly it,” she explains, “You must be calm, allow the water to be your guide.”

The rest of the day is spent helping him master riding the ilu and learning how to breathe more effectively. The darkness of night takes over the landscape the longer the two stay out, but they don’t seem to notice through the distraction of the other’s company.

One of Tompa’s hands is resting on Neteyam’s heart, the other his stomach. She guides him through his breathing technique, helping him slow his heart down. The cave is quiet, save for his deep inhales and exhales and the girl’s quiet praise.

“Neteyam! Srewtompa!”

The both of them whip their heads in the direction of the village at the first shout. It is only then that Neteyam notices the lack of light outside. Tompa’s hands fall from his body as she looks at the boy, panic now written on his face.

“Shit,” he says, “I have to get home.”

“Oh, Neteyam, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t even paying attention,” she says. She calls for an ilu as they make their way to the shore. He shakes his head, making a ‘no’ gesture with his hands.

“Don’t be sorry, it’s my fault,” he says, “I should have paid more attention.”

“Here, get on,” she says, gesturing to the ilu in front of them. He looks puzzled, glancing at the ilu and then back to Tompa.

“But where is yours?”

“I will ride with you,” she says, “You’ve been doing well all day and--”

“No, no, no,” he says, shaking his head, “If I mess up and hurt you--”

“You won’t hurt me,” she assures. His mouth opens to refute, but the volume of their names gets louder. She looks him in the eyes and points at the animal, “On. Now.”

He sighs, getting on and allowing Tompa to follow suit. Her hands gently land on his waist and he makes the bond. He holds on with one hand, the other landing on the back of Tompa’s thigh to ensure she doesn’t fall. The ilu zips through the water and the girl admires the life around them as they make their way back to the village.

Jake, Tonowari, and Ronal stand on the beach as the two approach. They hop off of their ilu and make their way closer to the adults, all having a look of anger on their faces.

“Srewtompa, get to your marui now,” Tonowari says sternly.

She furrows her brows, “Have I done something wrong?”

“Just get home,” he says. Tompa’s head falls with shame. She turns to Neteyam and says a quiet goodbye before making her way back to her home. Tonowari begins walking away, but Ronal lingers for a second to send Neteyam daggers with her gaze. He can’t fight off the guilt that begins to brew in his chest for getting Tompa in trouble, and he says a silent prayer to Eywa that nothing happens to her.

“Your mother and I told you not to stay out late, Neteyam. Your mother is at home worried sick,” Jake says.

“I’m sorry dad,” Neteyam says. His gaze falls to the floor and his ears flatten sadly, tail falling limp instead of its usual sway.

“And with a girl?” Jake adds. Neteyam’s head shoots back up, eyes wide at the implication.

“What? No! It’s not like that. She was teaching me how to ride an ilu,” he explains. His explanation is louder than his regular volume and the panicky tone in his voice probably didn’t help to convince his father that nothing was going on.

“All night? Alone? Far from the village?” Jake asks, a small smile appearing on his face.

“Okay, I know how it looks, but--” he stutters on his words and his dad’s eyebrow raises. “Dad, stop it! No! We were just riding all day!”

“All day? Wow! That’s impressive, son,” Jake says. He doesn’t even attempt to contain his own amusement, and Neteyam’s face scrunches in mortification.

“Oh, father, ew! Grow up!”

Courting

characters: neteyam, lo’ak, tsireya, ao’nung, rotxo

gender neutral reader

content warning: fluff

synopsis: how they court you

Courting

neteyam

mainly hunts and fishes for you

it’s something that not only displays his skill and gives a reason as to why he would be a good mate but also provides for you and acts as a gift

he wanted to court you in the most efficient way possible, while still showing he cared

he also wanted to be traditional

delivers his kills with a beaming smile

softly compliments your hair, your eyes, your clothing, your jewelry, anything and everything

this was also something that was thought through

he was worried that while hunting for you was very effective, it wasn’t personal enough

so he makes sure to compliment you to make up for the lack

you hear a loud thud behind you and slightly jump. upon turning around you see neteyam proudly smiling over yet another skinned, cut, deboned, and nicely packaged animal. you can always tell how much effort he puts into delivering them to you, making sure you have to put minimal effort into preparing them to be eaten. you grin at his gift.

“another? at this rate i will have enough meat to feed the entire clan,” an exaggeration of course. he was very careful not to give you too much so that none was wasted.

“yes another,” he still wears his bright smile, though now it’s more lovey. his yellow eyes lock with yours, the soft look in them causing a calming warmth to flow through your body, “it gives me an excuse to visit the most beautiful being in the village.”

your smile widens as you lean over to place a kiss on his cheek. he hums in content and subconsciously leans toward you.

“you still do not have to hunt for me as often as you do neteyam. i appreciate it very much, but i don’t want to keep you,” now standing chest to chest with him.

“hush. i must show you that i am a good provider. and seeing you always makes my days better.”

pulling back, you speak once more, “you will see me a lot more once we are mates,” you smile smugly at his wide eyes. darting just out of his reach when he comes to his senses, moving to grab you, and giggling as he pulls you into his chest by your waist.

Courting

lo’ak

gives you trinkets and gifts

they’re always personal

your favorite color, your favorite smell, your favorite flower

it shows he listens and retains what you tell him

will come up to you after hunting or flying and give you a flower or pretty rock he found

he eats up your exited and grateful face after he presents the small gifts to you

he will occasionally hunt for you, but he can tell by your reactions that you appreciate the thoughtful gifts more

he also makes sure to spend lots of time with you

he wants you to know he’s there for you

a give the love you want to receive type

you could tell from the exited speaking and sound of flapping ikran wings that the hunting party had returned. you elect to finish your task before going to greet them. just as you’re wrapping up, you hear footsteps approaching you. you think nothing of it until a beautiful rock, appearing to have glittering crystals embedded in it, is placed on top of your workspace. when you lift your eyes you see lo’ak. standing before you, still decked in his hunting garb with a soft smile on his face. you can’t help the smile that grows on your own.

“thank you lo’ak, it’s breathtaking.”

“i am glad you like it,” he moves to sit next to you. staring at your expression as you turn the rock over in your hands. “i found it when tracking in the woods, i thought you would enjoy it.”

“i do. i must find a place for it where it stands out,” your eyes leave the gift for a moment to lock with his before you turn to rest your head on his shoulder. still rotating the rock to admire it from every angle.

he speaks after a few moments of silence, “how has your day been?”

you softly laugh at the question, “i should be asking you that, you were the one who went hunting. i have just been here all day.” you twist your head, still resting on his shoulder, to look at his face.

“still, i want to hear about it.”

“only if you tell me about yours after,” you propose.

“done.”

his soft expression never leaves as you tell him about your uneventful day. assuring himself that he will officially ask you to be his mate soon.

Courting

tsireya

makes you matching jewelry

emphasis on matching

she weaves you colorful bracelets and intricate necklaces

she sews you beaded arm bands and carves charms out of wood

she spends hours upon hours perfecting every detail to make sure it’s perfect for you

and when she gifts it to you she always has her own on

“i thought it would be cute if we matched”

it fills her with pride to see that every day you wear at least one of the pieces she has made for you

it also makes her a tad bit happy that if others pick up on the fact that you match they may know you are taken (almost) but she will never admit that

“dearest!”

recognizing the sweet voice you smile. your eyes search the beach until they land on tsireya, practically skipping her way over to you with her hands behind her back. you know what that means, and your smile widens at the realization.

you speak once she is only a few feet from you, “hi tsi!”

“close your eyes,” she says as she moves to kneel across from you.

having done this more times than you can count, you instantly do as she says. preparing for her to place whatever jewelry she has made for you wherever its supposed to rest on your body. you feel her cool fingers on your skin as she gently ties a necklace around you neck. quickly followed by a soft, “do not open them yet.” and of course, you do as told. this is typically when she puts her own jewelry on, not wanting to spoil the surprise before giving you yours. “now you may open them!”

the excitement in her voice makes a soft warm feeling flow through you. opening your eyes and looking down at yourself, you spot the necklace. at the center rests a sun shaped charm carefully carved out of wood. the string on the necklace is lined with very small yellow and teal beads, and evenly spaced from the center are two smaller sun charms. you look up to find her own necklace is almost the same, only with moon charms instead of suns and dark blue instead of yellow beads.

“you always tell me that i am like the sun. and i feel that if i am the sun then you are my moon, so i thought it would be nice to have something to remind us of each-other when we are apart,” she explains.

touched, you quickly pull her in for a tight hug. you bury your face in the crook of her neck before speaking, “it is so beautiful tsireya. i do not think i will ever take it off. thank you.”

“of course dearest. anything for you.” and you don’t have to look up to know that she is beaming with joy and love.

Courting

ao’nung

flirts with you. like a lot

like every time he sees you

winking, lingering touches, compliments. you name it, he does it

which would be a great indicator of his interest if he wasn’t a natural flirt

he is much much more flirty with you than others

but you don’t pay enough attention to the flirting to notice because you’ve already written it off in your head

but, the moment he realized his feelings for you he began working on a gift

a beautiful headpiece with pearls and small shells swirled in intricate patterns

but he spoke not a word of it to you until he presented it

you stood in the secluded part of the beach ao’nung had asked you to meet him, wide eyed, lips parted, as you stare at the most gorgeous headpiece you’ve ever seen that he holds delicately between his fingers and extends out to you. his confidence begins to chip away with every moment you stand there saying absolutely nothing. honestly he doesn’t know if you’re still breathing.

he clears his throat and rolls his shoulders, “if you do not like it you do not have to accept it,” he speaks, beginning to pull the headpiece away.

this snaps you out of your trance. you let out a sharp squeak that sounds like “no!” and pull his hand back by his wrist. wary to touch the beautiful object he holds. “i..i was just surprised…”

you finally look at his face to find him staring at you like you’re the stupidest thing on the island. “hah?!? what do you mean ‘you were surprised’? i made my feelings for you very clear!” his face slightly flushes at the end of his sentence, his tone is accusatory but still much softer than you’ve heard him speak to others.

you smile a bit at his flustered face but try to suppress it to save his feelings, as you know he will be embarrassed. “i…guess i did not pick up on it. i am sorry,” you stroke your thumb where it rests against the inside of his wrist, “the headpiece is beautiful, i love it. could you please put it on me?”

his confident smile is back. he tugs you closer to him with his free hand, forcing you to bump into his chest. he tilts your head up and gently places the headpiece, that looks suspiciously like a crown, on your head. he holds your face in his hands once it’s in the correct position and places a kiss on your forehead, “beautiful.”

Courting

rotxo

he constantly checks up on you

he also brings you things he thinks you might need, and does small things for you so you don’t have to

if you have been working all day and he thinks you may not have had time to eat he will visit you to bring you food and make sure you rest

he will style your hair for you if he notices you’re tired

it really shows that he cares for you and your well being

that would have been more than enough for you to say yes to being his mate on its own

but how he officially asks you is by taking you to a small area on the island where he goes to be alone

sharing a spot so precious to him with someone makes him feel very vulnerable, but he thinks you’re worth it

you stare in awe at the beautiful bioluminescent glow of the plant life surrounding the small pool and below the surface of the water. when rotxo had asked you to join him for a walk so he could, in his words, “talk to you about something important” you didn’t expect him to take you somewhere like this.

“what do you think?” you could hear the nervousness in his voice

your voice is breathy when you answer him, “it…it is so stunning.” you lightly brush you hand along the plants lining the rocks.

after a few moments, you come back to reality. slowly turning to him while your eyes still dance along the glowing life, “what was it you wanted to talk about?” your eyes finally landed on him at the end of your sentence, and you found yourself smiling at how nervous he looked. you took his hands in yours, “what do you look so nervous for?” you tilt your head, teasing smile on your face, “you know i do not bite.”

“i-i know! i just- i am not sure how you are going to react.”

“if this is about what i am almost positive you would only take someone to a place this close to your heart for, then you have nothing to worry about.”

you can see the tension leave his shoulders as he releases a long sigh. meeting your eyes with a much more relaxed expression and a loving smile.

and you think, this boy is going to be the death of me.
