four times you said his name and the one time you couldn’t

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* neteyam x fem!reader *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

includes: childhood bffs to lovers trope, soft/idiot neteyam, comforting reader, idiots in love, y/n being poetic, tuk and y/n alliance, sad neteyam 💔

warnings: descriptions of injuries and blood, death

a/n: I LOVE ANGST!!!! pls enjoy y’all (ignore the weird formatting, tumblr is annoying)

Four Times You Said His Name And The One Time You Couldnt

nete, wait up! both of you were around 13 and 14, you were eager to explore the lush, vibrant forest of Pandora. you set out early in the morning, hand in hand, with a sense of excitement and adventure in your hearts. the sun was just starting to rise, casting a warm golden glow over the forest and illuminating the towering trees. as both of you walked, you marveled at the beauty of your surroundings, pointing out colorful birds and playful predators along the way. the pair of you talked and laughed, enjoying each other's company and the freedom of the forest. you had always done this together since you could walk, exploring more and more terrain as you got older and stronger. so this shouldn’t have been any different right? neteyam was about 10 feet in front of you, looking ahead at a gigantic tree to climb, excitedly running towards it. as a means to catch up, you started running in a hurried pace towards neteyam. instead of reaching him, you stumbled and let out a cry of pain. neteyam was at your side in an instant, his arm wrapped around you to support you. he carefully lowered you to the ground. “y/n! what happened? are you alright?” he voiced with concern.

“I twisted my ankle” you said in a strained voice, trying to manage the pain.

“shit this is my fault. I’m sorry y/n, I should’ve waited for you” he said with remorse in his tone.

“it’s alright nete. can you just help me up here?” you asked.

and you didn’t have to ask again. “I’ve got you, don’t worry.”

he hoisted you up onto his back and carried you all the way back to the village for mo’ats attention. he was quiet on the way back for the most part, whispering and asking if you were okay. he also cursed himself for not waiting for you, his excitement getting the better of him.

“this is not the way to treat your future mate, leaving her behind” mo’at said in a monotone voice. both you and neteyam were extremely taken aback by that— intense blushing from both parties. neteyam wanted to deflect that statement immediately out of embarrassment, but how could he talk back to the great tsahik? even if it was a joke. he repaid you for many days after, fetching fruit for you from the trees, and bringing you river stones to make bracelets. “neteyam it’s not that serious I promise” you teased lightheartedly.

“it is my fault and I owe you” he responded.

all you could do was sit there and stare at him, feeling the heat making its way to your cheeks. oh dear eywa, you were in love.

**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚

neteyam!! you yelled excitedly. he had just completed his dream hunt, the very thing that made him become recognized as a man and as a warrior in the omaticaya clan. the dream hunt was a significant moment in a Na'vi's life. it was a rite of passage, where they sought out their spirit animal and expressed themselves musically in a chemically induced trance. it was a time for reflection and growth, and for Neteyam, it had changed his life in ways he never could have imagined. "y/n" he said, his voice filled with emotion.

“are you alright neteyam?” you voiced with concern.

"i have something important to tell you. the dream hunt, it was more than just a rite of passage for me. it was a moment of clarity, but i don’t want to mess this up.”

“mess what up” you asked cluelessly

“us” he whispered

you felt a tinge of blush radiating from your cheeks. could this be the moment? after pining for so long, would he finally see you the way you saw him?

he took a deep breath, gathering his courage. “i’m done pretending that you’re just a friend to me when I see you as so much more than that! i love you, y/n. i love everything about you, from your kindness and your adventurous spirit, to the way you make me laugh and the way you stand by me no matter what. its always been you."

“you are such an idiot neteyam” you giggled

“what?”

“i’ve seen you for so long oeyä tsamsiyu. ever since we were little” you expressed, shyness taking over you. you couldn’t believe this was actually happening.

neteyam began reflecting on all of the times people confused you for being together, and being teased about having crushes on each other. the longing touches and gazes, he should’ve realized this sooner, but with the confirmation of his feelings being mirrored, he couldn’t help but act confident.

“If you wanted to kiss me so bad, why don't you do it then?” he teased

you giggled, feeling the butterflies in your stomach. the attempt at hiding your flustered feeling was failing drastically. you slowly walked towards him and everything happened at once. your arms wrapping around his neck, and his around your lower back. you kissed him until the both of you became breathless. “i’m so lucky to be yours oeyä oare“ neteyam expressed. the pair of you were so happy to be in this moment.

**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚

neteyam you skxawng! you yelled, slapping him on the back of his head. “what was that for?” he questioned while rubbing his head, pretending to be affected by your slap.

“it was from tuk!” you giggled, the young girl poking out from behind you and sticking her tongue out at him. over the course of a few years, the time you spent with the sully family increased by tenfold, mainly due to being with neteyam. because of this, tuk has started to look up to you and see you as her own sister. recently, both of you formed an alliance to annoy him— which was tuks idea. neteyam smiled as he watched you and tuk giggling together, your heads bent close as you whispered and plotted your next mischievous act. he loved his girls, each in their own unique way. you were his rock, his partner in all things, and tuk was his little ray of sunshine, always bringing joy and laughter to his life— even if she was plotting against him sometimes which was all in good fun. every day, it seemed like there was a new joke or prank waiting for him, and he was the target. but he didn't mind. he loved hearing tuks laugh and seeing your playful side come out.

you and tuk had set your sights on a particularly elaborate scheme, involving your beloved ikran. the ikrans were known for their mischievous nature, and you had promised tuk to use it to play a prank on neteyam. you hopped on while tuk sat in your lap, and linked with it using your queue. just as he was about to enter the clearing, you and tuk sprang into action. the ikran, who had been hiding in the trees, swooped down, hovering just inches from neteyams head. he ducked and dodged, trying to avoid its playful jabs, but the ikran was too quick and precise for him, especially under your control. even as he laughed and dodged, neteyam couldn't help feeling grateful for both of you and the laughter you brought into his life. with a shake of his head, he grinned and reached for a hand from you. “this has to stop or i just may have to get both of you back” he said playfully

“you can try!” tuk grinned, full of confidence.

“that’s cute ‘teyam but we are a duo and you’re all alone” you pointed out sarcastically.

“tuk, could i talk to y/n alone?” neteyam asked.

tuk didn’t even bother to respond. she just eyed the both of you and grinned before hopping out of your lap and walking off to the village. “oh eywa what am i going to do with you y/n” neteyam joked

“I’m not sure, maybe we can figure that out?”

neteyam then picked you up and carried you in his arms, before running off and tossing you into the nearby lake. “what was that?!?” you yelled after breaking surface with the water.

“payback!” neteyam joked, before jumping in himself. he grabbed your waist in the water then pulled you in for a kiss. the both of you made life so much fun for each other.

**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚

neteyam, are you alright? you whispered in a low voice. recently, the sully family moved to live with the metkayina clan due to the sky people taking over the forests, and you decided to join them. you can tell he has been taking it hard, only keeping it to himself, trying to stay strong for his siblings and sane for his father. his head was not held as high recently, and his reclusiveness was beginning to take a toll on your relationship. “you can talk to me always, you know that right?”

“everything is fine y/n. we are safe here and that is what matters” he deflected

“i miss home too y’know….you don’t have to put on a front with me ‘teyam.” you voiced in a low, calming tone, trying to get him to open up. you placed a hand on his shoulder, moving up to his neck. neteyam melted under your touch, feeling some of the stress and tension float away— only you could do that to him.

“i just feel like… i have to set an example and be strong for everybody. its so hard y/n, all I want to to is be back in the forest.” he whispered out shakily, trying to hold back the emotion that was beginning to consume him.

“i know, i know nete. I’m sorry you are held to such high expectations, but you shouldn’t bottle it up like this… i am always here” you gazed into his eyes, giving him every bit of reassurance he was needing.

“I see you, my y/n” he caressed your cheek and planted a kiss on your forehead, forever appreciative of you.

“we will make great memories here by the sea” you reassured, listening to the whispers of the ocean nearby. a sound that would never cease to exist as long as you were there.

“the ocean is our constant now nete, not the forest. listen to the tides, rolling in and out. the endless waves, there are so many possibilities for us” you said optimistically

“you are like my… what does dad call it? a therapist?” he chuckled

“i have no idea what that is but I’m glad you’re smiling now” you giggled

neteyam leaned into you, grateful for your understanding— and the fact he didn’t have to act in any superficial way around you. the both of you stayed like that for a while, holding each other and reflecting on the memories made in the forest. he loved that he could be honest with you. with you by his side, neteyam felt like he could take on the world.

**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚

net- you shakily yelled. neteyams heart raced as he saw you fall into the ocean, clutching the right side of your chest in pain. he quickly rushed to your side, panic setting in as he saw the red leaking into the water.

“y/n!” he called his ilu and swam to you quickly, grabbing and hoisting you behind him. he held onto your leg to keep you steady, adrenaline overtaking him.

as the ilu made its way to the rocks, neteyam picked you up and slowly laid you on the ground. he turned you on your side to examine the damage. an exit wound. per jakes teaching, he knew there would be no coming out of this.

you managed to escape the ship, but not without a death sentence. you felt the stinging in your chest, along with the warm blood flowing down your front. your lung was punctured, breathing becoming shallow and labored. you moved your hands down towards the wound, but neteyam took your hands in his, moving his blood smudged hand to your cheek, trying to distract you. “neteyam, it hurts so much” you choked out.

he had tears filling his eyes, not knowing what to say. “i know, i know y/n. just try to keep talking for me okay? everything will be fine.” he was trying to think of what jake would do in this situation.

“look at me. i’m not going to make it nete. you need to go, save the others. save tuk and kiri” you whispered, emotion filling your words.

“no y/n I can’t leave you like this! i’ll be right here” he said, pulling you into his arms, disregarding the blood.

“neteyam, i can’t feel your touch” you began to panic. your body felt as if it was going completely numb due to the blood loss and shock. your soul was partly in the physical realm, and partly with eywa.

“shh its okay I’m here. i’m so so sorry y/n” he was openly sobbing now, your time was about to be up.

“nete i-“

everything went still. blood began to fill your mouth, oozing out of the corners of your lips. your body became limp in his arms, breathing no more. your spirit was with eywa now. neteyam held you close and sobbed, why did it have to be you and not him? he would forever live with the guilt of your blood on his hands.

﹥ˏˋ♡̩͙♡̩̩̥͙♡̩̥̩ ⋆ ♡̩̥̩♡̩̩̥͙♡̩͙ˊˎ﹤

 bonus

it was well past your funeral. neteyam decided to take his first visit to the cove of the ancestors after your death, to see you. after linking his queue, he found himself in a similar memory of when you were kids. you were sitting on the ground, ankle propped up on a rock as you rubbed it gently. "what’s wrong, 'teyam? why are you crying?” you asked, looking up at him with a confused expression. he tried to compose himself, but the sight of you so alive and yet so far away was overwhelming. "nothing y/n, just happy to see you" he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. you looked at him with a mix of sympathy and confusion, but attempting to lighten the mood “i just saw you 5 minutes ago you skxawng“ neteyam lightly laughed, reminiscing on your physical presence. he clutched your hand tightly, grateful for this moment, no matter how fleeting it was. He knew that he would never forget this memory, or the love that both of you shared. and he took comfort in knowing that, in some small way, you would always be with him.

The kids watch Tompa as she jumps into the water with a squeal. Tsireya, Rotxo, and Aonung jump in behind her. Neteyam and Lo’ak look at one another, then run in time with each other. They make a big splash and their sisters follow in behind them with excited screams. Tompa watches the four explore the ocean with wonder in their eyes. Tompa uses her hands to guide a creature in their direction and they watch in awe as it allows her to change its course. Lo’ak reaches for it, but it quickly turns away from him. Both boys suddenly go a little wide-eyed, then swim up to the surface as fast as they can. They peek their heads back under the water and Lo’ak shrugs a little when he notices the staring.

Tsireya signs ‘swim together with us’ to the boys and they shrug again. Tompa makes a ‘come here’ motion with her arm and dives deeper, making her way next to Tsireya. The boys go back up for a breath and begin following. They follow the group for less than a minute before the slight panic flashes on their faces again. They point up, frantically swimming to the top to gasp for air. Tompa abandons her usual swimming group and resurfaces with the newcomers. They pant at the surface and she looks at them both, observing their reactions as the other Metkayina surface behind her.

“Are you alright?” she asks.

“You’re too fast! Wait for us,” Tuk whines.

“Just breathe. Breathe,” Tsireya says, trying to reassure the three Sully children.

“You are not good divers,” Aonung says, “Maybe good at swinging through trees, but--” Tsireya pushes her brother’s head so he stops speaking.

“Come on bro,” Lo’ak says, sounding very tired already.

“We don’t speak this finger talk, guys. We don’t know what you’re saying,” Neteyam says, making a gesture with his hands.

“We will teach you guys,” Tompa says, looking at Tsireya who nods in agreement. Rotxo begins to ask for Kiri, causing the group to look around for the girl. “She couldn’t have gotten very far.”

“We should find Kiri,” Rotxo insists.

“Kiri’s fine,” Lo’ak says, “She’s off being… Kiri.”

The next few weeks go about the same. The group of Metkayina teens try to teach the group something, Kiri is usually gone “being Kiri” (as Lo’ak puts it), but the others are always there ready to learn.

Tompa takes the day off, but hears her name being called out by Aonung regardless. She lets out a groan, head flopping to the side. Her slumber fades away the more her name is called out. She stands, stretching and making her way outside. She jumps into the ocean, the chill water waking her immediately. Her body glides through the water and she stops when she meets with the group.

“Need my help already?” she taunts, smiling evilly at the boy.

Aonung rolls his eyes, sighing in defeat, “Yes. Yes we do. I need you to help teach these skxawng--”

“You can leave now, Aonung,” she says, splashing water in his direction. The two ilu swim up to her, bumping her gently and she giggles. She greets them with pats on the head as they both try to fight for Tompa’s attention. She shoos them, telling them to approach the Sully boys. Tsireya swims to Lo’ak’s side, which tells Tompa to help Neteyam. She gestures to the ilu, “Show me what you got, Sully.”

She grabs the ilu’s kuru as Neteyam climbs onto the animal. He looks at her with a nervous expression, “This has not been going well for Lo’ak and I.”

She can’t help but giggle at the boy. “Just breathe, Neteyam. Gently make the bond when you are ready.”

He nods and takes a deep breath, pulling his braid to the front of his body. The pink tendrils meet with those of the ilu, and Neteyam gasps gently. His eyes blow out wide and Tompa reminds him to feel the shared breaths with the ilu, the strength of the creature. He seems to calm down a little more with every word, less tense than when he first got on top of the creature. She guides his hand to hold on and he looks at her through lidded eyes. Tompa quickly looks away from him, pulling her hand to herself.

“Hold on and go when you’re ready,” she says. Before she can think of anything else to add, the ilu takes off with Neteyam holding on. It starts off rough, Neteyam barely able to hold on with the speed. Then the ride smooths out and Neteyam visibly calms down. He and the ilu glide smoothly through the water and she smiles proudly at how easy it was to teach the boy after Aonung couldn’t do it.

Tompa calls out for an ilu, a familiar female sliding up to her side. She makes the bond and grabs on, the ilu takes off after Neteyam quickly. She stays next to him, watching as Neteyam explores the ocean on the ilu’s back.. The two glide as if they are flying through air, the feel of the cool water rushing around them both. They ride together for what feels like forever, until he has to go back up for a breath.

“Woah,” he says, looking around as he breathes in deeply.

She smiles at the boy proudly, “You did so well, Neteyam.”

“I guess I just had an amazing teacher,” he says.

She rolls her eyes at him, “Well I had a determined student. And you held your breath much longer than before!”

“Yeah. I don’t know what it was,” he says, “I just felt so calm down there.”

“That’s exactly it,” she explains, “You must be calm, allow the water to be your guide.”

The rest of the day is spent helping him master riding the ilu and learning how to breathe more effectively. The darkness of night takes over the landscape the longer the two stay out, but they don’t seem to notice through the distraction of the other’s company.

One of Tompa’s hands is resting on Neteyam’s heart, the other his stomach. She guides him through his breathing technique, helping him slow his heart down. The cave is quiet, save for his deep inhales and exhales and the girl’s quiet praise.

“Neteyam! Srewtompa!”

The both of them whip their heads in the direction of the village at the first shout. It is only then that Neteyam notices the lack of light outside. Tompa’s hands fall from his body as she looks at the boy, panic now written on his face.

“Shit,” he says, “I have to get home.”

“Oh, Neteyam, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t even paying attention,” she says. She calls for an ilu as they make their way to the shore. He shakes his head, making a ‘no’ gesture with his hands.

“Don’t be sorry, it’s my fault,” he says, “I should have paid more attention.”

“Here, get on,” she says, gesturing to the ilu in front of them. He looks puzzled, glancing at the ilu and then back to Tompa.

“But where is yours?”

“I will ride with you,” she says, “You’ve been doing well all day and--”

“No, no, no,” he says, shaking his head, “If I mess up and hurt you--”

“You won’t hurt me,” she assures. His mouth opens to refute, but the volume of their names gets louder. She looks him in the eyes and points at the animal, “On. Now.”

He sighs, getting on and allowing Tompa to follow suit. Her hands gently land on his waist and he makes the bond. He holds on with one hand, the other landing on the back of Tompa’s thigh to ensure she doesn’t fall. The ilu zips through the water and the girl admires the life around them as they make their way back to the village.

Jake, Tonowari, and Ronal stand on the beach as the two approach. They hop off of their ilu and make their way closer to the adults, all having a look of anger on their faces.

“Srewtompa, get to your marui now,” Tonowari says sternly.

She furrows her brows, “Have I done something wrong?”

“Just get home,” he says. Tompa’s head falls with shame. She turns to Neteyam and says a quiet goodbye before making her way back to her home. Tonowari begins walking away, but Ronal lingers for a second to send Neteyam daggers with her gaze. He can’t fight off the guilt that begins to brew in his chest for getting Tompa in trouble, and he says a silent prayer to Eywa that nothing happens to her.

“Your mother and I told you not to stay out late, Neteyam. Your mother is at home worried sick,” Jake says.

“I’m sorry dad,” Neteyam says. His gaze falls to the floor and his ears flatten sadly, tail falling limp instead of its usual sway.

“And with a girl?” Jake adds. Neteyam’s head shoots back up, eyes wide at the implication.

“What? No! It’s not like that. She was teaching me how to ride an ilu,” he explains. His explanation is louder than his regular volume and the panicky tone in his voice probably didn’t help to convince his father that nothing was going on.

“All night? Alone? Far from the village?” Jake asks, a small smile appearing on his face.

“Okay, I know how it looks, but--” he stutters on his words and his dad’s eyebrow raises. “Dad, stop it! No! We were just riding all day!”

“All day? Wow! That’s impressive, son,” Jake says. He doesn’t even attempt to contain his own amusement, and Neteyam’s face scrunches in mortification.

“Oh, father, ew! Grow up!”

WICKED GAME

WICKED GAME

pairing. neteyam x fem!reader

summary. the battle between the sky people and na'vi had finally ended. you stay seated in your disassociating state, while your lover, neteyam, stays by your side.

warnings. mentions of killings/death, violence, blood.

WICKED GAME

"the world was on fire, no one could save me, but you."

that being the only thing you were able to mutter under your breath, after who knows how silent you were before. you were sat on beneath a palm tree, your head resting on the base of the big plant. beside you, there sat a dark blue na'vi. a na'vi that felt tired and exhausted, just as you were.

it had been hours since the war with the sky people had happened, but there, you two sat slouched. it may have been victorious to some people, to others, it didn't.

"we have to go, yawne [beloved]. they may be looking for us." neteyam whispered to you.

giving him no attention, you kept looking forward at the sight in front of you. ignoring the continuous bleeding on your arm, but giving attention to the darkness that was beginning to surround the fire blazing ship that sunk slowly. parts of your island had small flames slowly dying while the sea killed it off. your busted lip arose, a small side smile painting your face. unconsciously smirking, neteyam looked at you confused.

images from before flood your mind. all the warriors who had come together to fight against the sky people. you being one of them. you remember exactly how you were able to save one of your siblings from a gunshot that was blown behind them. you remembered how you forcefully dragged one of your friend's unconscious body, taking them to where a spot where all the healers in the village hid. you remembered everything. especially the death of your father.

if only neteyam was able to do something and heal the broken heart you had. the scream of pure pain and agony you let out, while squeezing the head of your father between your chest and arms. you yelped in pain, nowhere near phased with the blood that didn't belong to you staining your stomach and legs.

the spear you previously had beside you when you grieved your father's death was soon found connecting an avatar's forehead with the walls of the ship. any avatar that came your way, well attempted, was instantly killed. the pain you felt was turned into rage. that rage now turned to numbness. overstimulation. emptiness.

all the while when you felt the world around you was unfair. when fire surrounded you, trying to burn you inside out. neteyam was there for you. the first to run to you when you grieved. the backup you never knew you needed, when an avatar tried shooting you from the back while you were too busy fighting off one in front you, neteyam was there for your back, literally.

your mind was blank. where had all this come from? out of your whole 16 years of life, your simple metkayina life was full of love and kindness. but when the sully's had seeked refuge and brought their war along with them, you started going through it all. going through emotions you never knew existed. never once in your simple life had you thought you were able to mercilessly take one's life with no hesitation. never once in your simple life you had thought you were going to find love. never once in your simple life you had thought you were going to be the one carrying your dead father's body back to land.

neteyam. although still young, you both knew you were destined for each other. despite your deep love for him, a small part of you in the back of your mind had anger about him and his family. how they had unintentionally brought their war along with them, killing your father. but you also knew they never meant to. they were a family who was trying to escape. and in that family, you met their mighty warrior. he saw you in many ways others couldn't. he saw the way your eyes shine when coming across an aquatic, small creature. he saw the way your lips turned into a soft smile when playing with tuk. you loved him with your whole being.

but you also loved your father. you could never love another, the way you loved your father. but you learnt that the sea gives and the sea takes.

coming to your senses, you turned to face the dark blue na'vi. leaning your head against his shoulder. even after all that happened right in front of your very own eyes, you found your peace with neteyam, him finding the same. you two sat in silence, watching the dark scenery in front of you.

sliding your fingers together with your mate's fingers, you let out a sigh of relief. a sigh of peace, more likely. you turned your head to the boy you relaxed on, observing how neteyam's cheeks darkened. your gaze was deep, full of admiration. to you, neteyam's beauty was shining brighter. to you, he was perfect. so perfect, you couldn't give him anything but love. and you showed that exactly.

pulling away from his shoulder, both of your palms were on both sides of your mate's face. swiftly, connecting his lips with your own. perfectly moulded together, with no sign of disconnecting. once you both pulled away, neteyam smiled down at your face. your drunk-in-love gaze falling on him, and him only.

"i see you, ma y/n." he muttered under his breath, his eyes trail every feature painted on your teal toned face.

bringing him down to your level by pulling him by the back of his neck, you pecked his lips once more.

"i see you, ma neteyam."
