The whine of drills and sparks singeing metal played in harmony with the sound of heavy rainfall. The toxic combination of gasoline, oil and fresh water bit at his sensitive nose. However, with the years spent in the auto shop the familiar smells have become comforting. He leaned against the steel service door frame, watching and guarding the entrance protecting the mechanics inside. The rain was thundering against the rooftop and metal awning shading the service doors. He closed his eyes, resting them just for a moment letting his six sense take over, as he was lulled by the cascading waterfall off the awning.

Wet footsteps sloshed against the asphalt, a new sound against the normal industrial noises. The shuffling of a paper bag accompanied the hurried steps. Inconspicuously, a floppy ear perked up towards the sound and when it got closer he pried open an eye. She was wrapped up tightly in a hoodie with her arms struggling over a large bag in her hands. She ran through the parking lot like she was running away from rolling lava. She broke thought he waterfall, her hoodie getting drenched, and pulled the hood of her hoodie back breathing a sigh of relief. He watched the pink and rosy burn on her cheeks and the tip of her nose. A smile radiated from her at him momentarily stopping Hyunwoo’s heart.

The words on his book silhouetted as bright headlights passed over the wide windowpane glossing over the dimly lit room. The comforting whirling oscillation of the heater and the hesitant rain trickling outside became background as he zoned into the sound of a running engine. He sighed marking his page with the ribbon bookmark, then closed the book with a clap; it was just getting to the good part. Harsh and rapid knocking drummed at the door before he even had time to stretch his limbs. He yelled from his recliner setting his circle glasses and book down on the side table, “I’m coming, I’m coming!”

He rubbed his palms over his tired eyes before he bent down slightly with one eye shut to look through the peephole revealing the restless, tall figure pacing on the other side. The figure raised his hand again, ready to knock another radical pattern, “Jin, please open up!” Jin swung open one of the wooden, double doors to open to the drenched cadet. The glossy, doe look in the buck’s eyes barely peeked from under his shagging brown hair told him that, in fact, everything wasn’t alright.

but that wasn’t the situation with mark.

the sweet stray had been rummaging through your trash all week, and you researched to find out that he’d be timid if you attempted to get near him.

he even got spooked when he noticed you peering through your window at him one evening. he was cautious about returning the next night, but you had a better idea.

removing your trash cans from outside, you put them in your garage. keeping a careful eye out, you set down a plate of food you cooked for him on your porch.

he was worried when he arrived and noticed your trash is gone, the hunch in his back from sadness prominent, tail wrapping around his leg as he went to walk away before hearing your small tap on the window.

he bolted for a bush, immediately startled until he saw you standing behind the glass, pointing down at the plate. he carefully walked up your steps and got the plate, rushing back to the bush to eat it all.

from then on he would arrive around seven every night, a plate of food waiting for him as he smiled at you through the window. eventually, he’d sit on the steps and eat, sipping a glass of water you left him.
