I Was Inspired To Write This

While looking up videos to help with designing and writing characters, I came upon a set of videos about creating cohesive casts by one Brookes Eggelston. Mr. Eggelston used what I’m assuming are some characters from a story he’s working on as an example of how to use opposites. The characters were...

Biko, a friendly dog-like creature made of some kind of healing jelly. He’s described as the group’s overworked medic, whose companions are a drain on him physically and mentally.

Glangor, a crab-like monster who appears to be the big, tough, stupid guy who’s “constantly getting hurt and having to be healed by Biko” (I’m guessing due to recklessness and stupidity).

Quilver, a literal and figuratively “prickly” rogue/archer who resembles a cross between a squirrel and a porcupine.

And Aecious, a tall, cobra-like naga with power over lightning and an arrogant, condescending visage.

I fell in love with the characters’ designs almost immeadiately and - as the title says - was inspired to qrite a short snippet about two of the characters. Please bear in mind that I know nothing about Mr. Eggelston’s story, characters, or world. This is just me filling in the gaps with my own ideas; so events and personalities may differ.

And to Mr. Eggelston, I’m sorry for not asking for permission. But your designs and explanation just got my creative juices flowing and I couldn’t help myself. Thank you for your informative videos and I wish you luck in all your future endeavors as an artist and YouTuber.

So, without further ago, let’s get to the good part:

Set-Up

This snippet takes place in a forest. A short time ago, Biko, Glangor, and Quilver (I wasn’t sure how to fit Aecious in) stopped at a nearby village. During their time there, Quilver’s “rogue instincts” got the better of him, leading him to pickpocket some the villagers. Quilver wound up getting caught and tricked Glangor into saving him when things got bad. Glangor wound up going berserk, causing nearly all of the village guards to try and stop him, and Biko to stop the situation and try and clear things up.

While this is going on, Quilver scurries off to the village temple and slips into the inner sanctum, where he finds a large jewel. His “rogue instincts” acting up again, he tries to steal the jewel and breaks it, releasing the Ruhkcrow, a monstrous bird that spreads a deadly disease wherever it flies.

Long story short, the villagers learn of what happened and Biko and his companions are tasked with retrieving the ingridients needed make a cure for the Ruhkcrow’s plague so Biko can cure the infected. Unfortunately, the ingridients are located in a dark, scary, monster infested forest.

Being the unpleasant, amoral one, Quilver is quick to argue with the others and balk about their situation (something he does all the time). This eventually results in him saying some very hurtful things to Glangor, causing to run off and get lost. Biko and Quilver start looking for him, but Quilver’s caustic attitude leads to another fight. Unfortunately, Biko has had enough...

B is Biko, Q is Quilver.

Q:"I can't believe you put up with that idiot as long as you have."

B:"Now Quil, Glangor may be a bumbler, but he means well."

Q:"He's a natural disaster in a crab shell! He breaks everything he touches, he's got the attention span of a flea on sugar, and calling him dumb as a stump is an insult to trees!"

B:"Yeah, he's...he’s a handful. But I can't just leave him."

Q:"Sure you can."

B:"What!?"

Q:"Just act like you're going to the market or something, tell him to wait 'til you get back and just...not get back."

B:"I can't just abandon him, Glangor's my friend!"

Q:"Pfft! Yeah, he sure is."

B:"He is! Now come, we need to find him before--"

Q:"Yeah, yeah, before he hurts himself! Honestly, I don't know who's dumber: the crab or you, for letting him take advantage of you."

*beat*

B:"What do you mean 'Glangor's taking advantage of me'?"

Q:"Oh come on Biko, I know your brain’s made of jelly, but you’re not stupid! Ol’ Crabcakes ‘likes’ you for your powers. You're the guy who fixes him up every time he gets an owie cuz he tried to hug a giant monster, or when he gets sick from eating ickberries despite the poison warnings plastered all around the forest. Oh, and don't forget all those people he beats up when he flies off the handle. Between treating him and cleaning up his messes, it's no wonder you're always ploppin' off to bed for 10 hours. You're not his friend, you're his personal medicine chest."

B:"Quilver..."

Q:"Come to think of it, maybe he's so stupid because you keep coddling him all the time. Maybe that dumb leechtoad will finally learn to use his head once he doesn't have you around to bale him out. You’d be doing both of a favor if you just--"

B:"Glangor's not a dumb leechtoad! YOU'RE a dumb leechtoad!"

Q:"Eh!?"

B:"Ever since you joined us, all we've done is try to be nice to you, Quilver! We got you out of the Spiker's Guild. We give you food and shelter. Glangor even let you hold Mr. Fuzzy! He doesn’t even let me do that!”

Q:”I didn’t want to hold Mr. Fuzzy.”

B:”That’s not the point! Glangor may hurt himself and he may make a mess of things, but he tries to be better!

Q:"Yeah, and then he makes a bigger mess."

B:”And all you’ve done is be grumpy, rude, and unhelpful, especially at the village yesterday!"

Q:"Hey! It's not my fault your big, dumb meathead--!"

B:"It's ALL your fault!”

Q:”Eep!”

B:”YOU started that fight at the diner because YOU tried to steal from the other patrons! The villagers got sick because YOU set the Ruhkcrow free when YOU tried to steal the gem from the temple! And YOU made Glangor run away and got us lost because YOU hurt his feelings!”

*Biko gets right in Quilver’s face.*

B:"You keep talking about how the world's a horrible place. That you're miserable and alone because everyone else is selfish and mean! Well it's not! They're not! You're not miserable because of the world Quilver, you're miserable because all you ever do is hurt people! And you’re alone because you're a selfish, spiky jerk!"

*Biko stomps off to look for Glangor, leaving Quilver alone, stunned.*

Q (whisper):"Yeah...I hurt people and you heal people."

*Quilver looks at his spine covered arms.*

Q (whisper):"It's what we were born to do...”

Q:”Ya lucky schmuck.”
