TLDR: Howdy needs to let go of his toxic masculinity /hj

Thinking about how Howdy may be the only caterpillar in his family who had already went through metamorphosis. Thinking about how to go through metamorphosis is a symbol of undergoing change, different stages and cycles of life, and transformation of one’s own identity. The renewal of oneself. And to undergo such metamorphosis, one would have to accept and embrace oneself in order to truly transform into something — or someone — new.

And in Howdy’s case, the only reason he had yet to undergo metamorphosis like the rest of his family is probably because he never truly accepted himself for who he is.

Some part of me feels that maybe the reason — or another reason — why Howdy has a tough relationship with his brother Latter is because unlike himself, Latter has learned to embrace himself for who he is — his talents, his passions, his hobbies. His self-expression and identity. And that because of how content Latter is with himself, maybe Howdy envies him and thus projects the sort of feelings of envy into…spite? Dislike? Some sort of emotion like that.

Also smth smth repressed homophobia/queerphobia smth smth Howdy feeling the need to express and present himself to be this traditionally masculine man to be perceived as such smth smth projecting his feelings of repression to his brother who seems rather queer-coded and if not that, then emotionally attuned and free. smth smth.

As someone who had to move around a lot cause of my dad’s job in the military, this was the episode that made The Cereal Bowl cry
