I ended up writing it anyway.
Summary:
A short little story of how Jekyll passes out in front of the lodgers due to lack of sleep.
Female Hysteria
This isn't about The Glass Scientists at all but I was reading a bit about female hysteria in the 18th and 19th centuries and I'm SHOCKED.
Apparently the "condition" was thought to be brought about by the uterus wandering around the body. Most women who were diagnosed with it simply had behaviors that made men uncomfortable. Some examples of this are nervousness, emotional outbursts, a tendency to cause trouble for others, And the loss of interest in sex as well as sexual forwardness.
It was said that both men and women could "contract" hysteria but only women were affected because of their "lazy and irritable nature".
Some symptoms they thought related to female hysteria included dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, blindness, muscle spasms, trouble swallowing, seizures, and more.
But what really surprised me was the treatment. The treatments and recommendations to fix it were sex, pregnancy, or a "pelvic massage" performed by either the husband at home or the doctor himself.
So not only was this fake condition used to invalidate women's emotions (and symptoms of real mental disorders like depression) and develop the idea that the very presence of a uterus was a physical ailment, but it was also used to make women into a sexual object for not only their husbands but their doctors as well because it was "prescribed".
Apparently, in "extreme cases" the woman was sent to an insane asylum and sometimes forced to undergo a hysterectomy (a surgical removal of the uterus).
(If I got any facts wrong or you have any other information on this topic I would love to hear about it).
Here’s another cutsy edit :D
Sorry the first part is a black screen.
I’m EXTREMELY new to the edit making world and it’s so fun!!! But unfortunately I decided to start AFTER a bunch of music was taken off of tiktok and my videos keep getting muted :(
But luckily for me there are other places I can share stuff I make. So here we are!
A little thing I’ve started 😌
