Why I dislike Harry Potter as a character and love Draco Malfoy instead

This is a past midnight rant that no one asked.

I read the HP series when I was 18, so I was probably not their main demographic. I still had a good time nonetheless, I loved the magical image of the Wizarding World and it was simply a pleasant reading experience.

But I found it really hard to like the main character. I had been wondering why, and finally I came to me. I just couldn't relate to Harry Potter. Maybe younger readers see Harry as this amazing wizard, destined to be the hero of the world, the Chosen One, the Boy Who Lived.

I was too old for that, I guess. I had already grown as a bitter adult at the time I read the series. By the age 18, I had experienced way too much reality to sympathize with an 11 yo kid being handed all kind of privileges on the name of his destiny.

I didn't say Harry had it easy. He lost his parents, was practically abused during his childhood (because of Dumbledore's fucked up scheme, may I add), and many other challenges he had to face. But he was eventually surrounded by loving friends and new families, received a lot kinds of favoritism, and got away with stupid things he did in occasions. But honestly, it's mostly about the good, supportive people around him. I can't think of any blessing worth more than that

What makes it really hard to like him is the fact that there is Draco Malfoy in the picture. Yes, Draco was awful, bigoted and prejudice. And also so very young, just like Harry. He got all his ideology and beliefs from his fucked up family, and never really had anyone to help him grow past that. Then he had to take the biggest wrong decision in his life, also because of his circumstances. I don't care whether he took the Dark Mark willingly or not, or whether he was old enough to consent about it or not (which I thought he wasn't), the important thing is that he wouldn't end up in that situation if not for his family and the situation he was put in.

In short, both Harry and Draco had to live their contrasting paths because of the respective family they were born in. None of them asked to be born to live that life, but there they were.

It was just frustrating to see the story ended without any proper redemption for Draco. It's even more frustrating when the author herself stated that Draco was an inherently bad character and would likely remain an unpleasant person throughout his life.

It's sad because I relate so much to Draco Malfoy. I have my own family issues to the point I wish I was born in an entirely different family, or maybe just never born at all. I had my mistakes, my bad decisions, my regret. I wish the situation was never like that.

So it was pretty discouraging to see a character like Draco, who was portrayed in several scenes to actually have some good in his heart, never get redeemed for his mistakes. Because as a flawed person with my own sins, I think it would be amazing to see a character gets a chance to change and become better. To meet good people who can help them grow. You know, just like a soothing reminder that life could eventually turn for the better, that anyone can grow and develop into a better person.

So yeah, it's hard for me to personally like Harry Potter and his wonderful life ahead, at least the canon version of it. I am bitter that he could have all that, simply because of his destiny while Draco couldn't even get his fair chance for redemption and growth.

Maybe that's why I love reading fanfictions about Draco redeeming himself so much. I just want all hopes that maybe life wouldn't be that unfair, maybe there's still a chance to live a better life lying ahead.

I just realised that Draco Malfoy probably grew up idolizing Harry Potter. He was almost certainly star struck by him from a very young age. Even though his parents were death eaters, they wanted Draco to be friends with him. They may have encouraged Draco's infactuation with Harry.

Draco was probably like when Ginny first met him. Then Harry crushed him. Of course, Harry didn't like Draco from the start because of his obsession with blood status and obvious flaunting of his wealth, but that's got to sting. Harry didn't want to be his friend. His childhood idol didn't like him. They say to never meet your heroes for a reason...

That started the foundation for him 'disliking' Harry. When he got sorted into Gryffindor it probably fueled his dislike, not knowing that Harry chose Gryffindor but had an aptitude for Slytherin. Draco was most likely taught from almost birth that Pure blood Slytherins were superior to every house/wizard.

Draco is a very complex character that people tend to write off as bad or evil. He deserved a better redemption. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Just like Slughorn, Albus Dumbledore collects people. Only, instead of focusing on those with influence, he looks to the outcasts.

The expelled half-giant. The young werewolf. The repentant Death Eater.

He protects them and gives them a second chance. All he asks in return is their loyalty.

And, if on occasion he requests that they undertake a certain task, invoking their debt of gratitude - well, that is no more than he is owed.

He once thought to add a certain disowned Black to his collection, but quickly realised his mistake.

Sirius is not an outcast, but a rebel. He knowingly chose his path, and chooses what price he is willing to pay for it. He refuses to be used.

So Albus Dumbledore abandons him.
