Not only trained, he bonded with it. Though they both have difficult and stubborn personalities, Hookfang is fiercely loyal and protective when he needs to be, caring a lot about his rider. And though Snotlout sometimes acts like he doesn't care, he was devastated when Hookfang got sick, and he refused to get any other dragon when it seemed like Hookfang had left him.

On Berk it's become normal to have trained dragons, but I tell you, if Snotlout showed up on a faraway island with Hookfang, messing around with the dragon and playing rough like he always does, people would faint.
