this is something i think about a lot fanfic helped me finally escape from an abusive family member fanfic helped me finally break up with my toxic-as-fuck ex fanfic has had such a profound impact on my life and i know i’m not alone in that some of the comments i’ve gotten on my own fic about how much it touched and affected the commenter have made me cry and isn’t that what art is supposed to do? reach people on some level so deep it’s often not even explicable? fanfic is art. by definition. and any of the reasons that people find to dismiss it as art like that it’s largely enjoyed by young women (hello misogyny my old friend) or that it is by nature derivative (guess what fucker all art is derivative) are entirely based on whatever personal agenda that person has to me fan works are honestly one of the purest and most beautiful forms of art there can be they’re born from nothing but love and put out into the world for no other reason than to share that love with others who feel the same way (there are obviously exceptions to this but tbh nothing in this universe is complete without imperfections) just… if you want to shit on people crafting absolutely BEAUTIFUL stories and sharing them for FREE i don’t even know what to tell you man and if you want to shit on people who enjoy and are touched by those works in ways that you go out of your way to not even try to comprehend i REALLY don’t even know what to tell you man other than that you are maybe an asshole who maybe doesn’t know as much about the thing you are judging as you think you do i have a whole other essay i could write about the complex and (unnecessarily) controversial beauty that is rpf but honestly this ain’t really a fandom space i’d want to publicly share that in lol anyway the moral here is: art is art you should never be ashamed to be moved by what moves you
