Unpopular opinion...

It had to go this way...

If Anne would told him clearly: I love u! I wanna be with you etc etc etc...

He would indeed break things of with Winifred and be with Anne

BUT

We all know how it feels to give up your dreams... even though he would be with love if his life it would feel like she stopped him from achieving his dreams... and it could blow out back at them one day during one of those arguments... and it would be awful to see Gilbert looking back and wondering what would happened if he did go to Sorbone...

What needs to happen is him and only him realising he wont be happy without Anne, its HIM who have to break things of with Winnie it HAVE to be his decision only...

He is lost, he is in love with Anne but heres this massive opportunity so he obviously doesnt want to mess things up for his future... I'm certain if he knew Anne loves him he would kiss her there, in that right moment...

But thing is, it wasn't a right moment for them to kiss. It would be wrong for many reasons..

1st Anne is drunk, I'm certain that is not how girl imagine her first kiss/love declarations goung

2nd Gilbert is still very confused/lost with his decisions, asking Anne was him trying to get answers which only he himself HAVE to find

3rd they are not alone, theres drunken party behind them, it's not very personal in my opinion

4th... it wasn't a right moment!

I said it already, what is going to happen is he is going to reach for his ring and find Anne's pen in his pocket... She prob put some personal things on it... he will adore it for a while and then will tell Winnie he doesnt love her, rush back to Anne all stressed that she lost him and then they will have a

Love declarations and a very first kiss...

My new headcanon that I will cling to until I die is that Gilbert uses The Pen to write on the Take Notice board

You don't know the amount of pride that filled me when Anne decided to go and talk to Gilbert instead of assuming things. Growth.

listen, gilbert will head to propose to winifred. they both will sit together at her house and at some point he opens his little purse in order to take the ring and... he sees the pen he borrowed from anne. he stops in the middle of his sentence and says he needs to go. he goes back to take the train to avonlea at the same time anne is arriving at charlottetown. they both look at each other and say they need to tell the other something. they start arguing about who should say it first until they say i love you at the same time.
