Going through Ao3 can be a funny experience if you want to be an amateur sociologist of fandoms. Some patterns start to emerge, but one that deserves a comment now is the romantic fic dynamics of the hololive section. I’m not judging too much their content in this post, because they’re too diverse to talk about, but I’ve been in the business since the late 2000s, so I know some opinions are better kept to myself, but I just want to observe something I thought to be incredibly amusing.

More than half are F/F fics, with Calli/Kiara being the biggest one. It makes sense since hololive has more female characters than male ones, but a mirror dynamic is also there, with a lot of M/M fics as well. But what makes this funny is that M/F are also a big number, but they’re most canon/OC, in which the OC is either explicitly the reader or implicitly – although the vast majority ship these with the girls so they make the OC male, there’s a good number of female OCs with the boys. They’re even shipping the managers with OCs. There is almost none F/M between canon characters and, even so, it’s mostly parodies or crack. I think out of the, so far, over 450 fics, only two or three had tried to be a “standard”, non-ironic romance.

It's like shipping canon F/M is some forbidden taboo that’s actually observed with solemnity. Like, reading some descriptions I was like “hahaNO!”, but even the most [insert your favorite synonym for ‘problematic’, because I really don’t want to sidetrack into discourse] are there, while everyone avoids canon F/M like the plague or Balaan Wonderland.

I mean, there was a controversy whether female talents should collaborate with males because corporate vtubing was built off idol culture initially (and that alone is a turn off for a lot of people), but they mostly got over that. Some of the intergender collabs are some of the best streams (like when Kronii went to therapy with Vesper and he got mentally scarred, and the Monopoly collabs). And yet, that didn't translate in a lot of fanfics, or almost neither at all.
