“I’ve seen the way you look at me when you think Idon’t notice.”

Kohaku didn’t think his facehad ever been so red. Shocked out of his daze where he sat with hisbare feet in the water, the young taijiya stared at the girl standingin the river. Kirara glanced up from where she was laying out on thewarm river bed, one of her tails smacking against his back while theother swished through his hair. Kohaku pushed the offending tailsaway, gaze never wavering from Rin. “I… what?”

Rin smiled. The hem of herkimono was rolled up and tucked into her obi, but the cloth that hungdown over her knees was still soaked. She placed her hands on herhips in the way she always saw Kagome do when she teased Inuyasha.“You heard me.”

Kohaku’s heart jumped upinto his throat. . “I don’t understand… weren’t we just  talkingabout-”

“We were talking aboutyou,” She finished, hands clasped behind her back as the waterrushed past her calves, “and your travels, and your adventures.Then I started telling you about the time I visited the south withLord Sesshomaru, and how I thought you would like the little orangefruits there, and you stopped listening because you were staring.You do that a lot, you know.”

“Idon’t stare!” Kohaku argued. “I-I… I was just-”  

“Staring.”Rin laughed. “You know, Kohaku, I think you might be in love withme.”

Inhis overwhelming embarrassment, Kohaku leapt up to his feet, nearlyslipping on the wet rocks. He managed to catch himself, but at thecost of his pride as Rin laughed at him again. “Honestly Rin,” Herecovered, “you shouldn’t say such silly things. We’re not kidsanymore.”

“Oh,I know that.” Rin shrugged with a sing-song tone. “But thatdoesn’t change the fact that you’re in love with me.”

“Iam not!”

“We’llsee.” She winked. Kohaku frowned, opening his mouth to defendhimself only to be cut off by a voice shouting from the forest.

“Rin!Come on, we have to go!”

“That’sKagome. I’m helping her make medicine today.” Rin wadded throughthe river until she made it to the shore, sand and dirt clinging toher wet feet. She paid it no mind as she untucked her kimono and letit drape down over her dirty ankles. “We’re going over to yoursister’s hut for dinner tonight, so I’ll see you there!” Shesmiled, taking a few running steps toward the tree line. Stopping ona second thought, the girl quickly turned around and pecked the boy’scheek, her own face tinted with a warm blush. “Uh… bye!”

WatchingRin scurry off, the boy remained frozen in place until shedisappeared into the forest. Beside him, Kirara huffed in amusement.Kohaku frowned and cupped his hand in the water to splash her nose inretaliation. “It’s not funny!”
