Moche Fineline Animals

The Moche (a culture of Northern Coastal Peru from 200 to 900AD) had the BEST art on their pottery. I have decided to share some choice examples with you.

Manta Rays

exaggerated crab silhouette with a kidney bean shaped body and protruding stalk eyes. It has a little mole-like feathered nose and a round ball-butt.

A stylish striped crab. It has thin claws, and its nose is shaped like a little grass patch.

Crabs

three very simplified hermit crabs. They have long legs and small stalk-eyes protruding from the front. The black one is angular, the two white ones are more curly.

A slightly more complex white hermit crab. It has stalk-eyes, a muscular claw, stick-like legs, and a little curl above its eyes.

Hermit Crabs

A wiggly striped crayfish (or shrimp) with extra long antennules, and a long thin claw.

a dynamic and strong looking striped crayfish. Its antennae and hefty claws are blown back by the force of its movement.

an extra stylized and stylish crayfish, who seems to have gelled its antennules straight and stiff. It's claw looks stenciled in.

Crayfish

a many-finned spotted catfish. It has 2 cartoonish eyes and a curly pair of whiskers/antennae extending from its trapezoidal head.

Catfish

a muscovy duck with a broad, flat, pelican-like beak. Its spotted with a black back and top of head. It has a mohawk, lumpy growths above its beak, and a diamond shaped tail. It stares directly at the viewer.

I more simplified duck. Its dots are much larger and sparser, and it's wing looks like half its feathers have been plucked. Its beak growths are smaller, but its mohawk is magnificent!

Muscovy Ducks

A cartoonish deer with its tongue hanging out. Its ear and tail look like veined leaves. It has antlers and prominent testicles.

Deer

a black sea-lion with claw-like flippers. Its back flippers a bent like legs, and it looks like its trying to eat a black ball.

a grinning sea-lion with a clown nose and mouth paint. It looks like getting hunted with clubs (not visible) is the funniest thing.

Sea-lions

stylized snail with a long thin shell and very thin stalks for its ball-eyes.

snail with a much more detailed tall thin shell. Its face looks a lot like a chinese dragon's. It has gritted teeth, a pointy ear, a normal eye, and then 4 mushrooms/stalk-eyes coming from its head.

Snails

ball shaped anemone with velcro hooks around the outside and a happily squinted eye in the centre.

Anemones

An amazing stylized octopus. It's centre is a 4-holed button. 7 curvy legs spiral out, each decorated with circles bordering one edge to symbolize its suckers.

Around shell with legs coming out of the front, a clam or oyster shell, and what might be a sea slug? Its peanut-shaped with two curled 'antennaes' coming from each end.

A starfish, another round shell, and another possible sea slug.

Other

a ridiculous creature. Cartoon lollipop with googly eyes and a striped stick. Its 'wings' look more like a cloak the lollipop is wearing, with little hooks sticking out from the shoulders. It has little triangular ears and short antennae.

AND A BUTTERFLY!!! (Or maybe a bat. But LOOK at it!)

I love them all!
