your best friend jake didn’t miss a thing that you did. the way that you scratched got cheek whenever you lied. the way that you used the same pen whenever you took an important test. and especially the way that your eyes ever so often veered off away from him to heeseung, the most recent boy that you have decided to acquaint yourself with and was waiting for him to do the same to you. jake felt himself grow sad at the sight of you waiting for another boy to give you the love that you wanted and deserved on this acclaimed “best night” of a teen’s life: prom night. defeated by your attention being captivated by someone that wasn’t him, he suggested, “why don’t we go and dance?”

releasing the pressure of your head on your hand that used your elbow as support to rest on your crossed knee, you peeled your eyes away from the boy that began to place his hand on the girl he was trying to court. attempting to remove heeseung and the thought that he would never reciprocate your feelings for him from your mind, you turned to jake and gathered your energy to give him your best smile. “nothing would make me happier.”

getting lost in the music and movement with you, jake smiled at the cheerfulness that you expressed as your happiness was what mattered the most to him. that’s why when heeseung, unsuccessful and unsatisfied with the girl he was originally aiming to be with, walked over to you and asked to take you out for the rest of the night, he let him do it. jake knew that a moment with the older boy would bring joy to you even if it was fake on the latter boy’s part. and that was further proved when he didn’t miss how your eyes immediately brightened when you galnced up at heeseung as he walked you to the exit. but unlike jake, you did miss a few things that your best friend did. including the way his smile faltered and a piece of him left with you when he saw another boy walk away with the person his considered the love of his life.
