The Garden of Love

by William Blake

I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen: A Chapel was built in the midst, Where I used to play on the green. And the gates of this Chapel were shut, And Thou shalt not writ over the door; So I turn’d to the Garden of Love, That so many sweet flowers bore. And I saw it was filled with graves, And tomb-stones where flowers should be: And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds, And binding with briars, my joys & desires.

Is it over? Oh wow, is it truly over? Damn, what a line to end on. "It was the devious-cruising Rachel, that in her retracing search after her missing children, only found another orphan."

Oh boy.

I also loved the last line of the last whole chapter. "... and the great shroud of the sea rolled on as it rolled five thousand years ago."

Jesus.

I'd felt an absence of Ishmael in the narrative since the chapter about Queequeg's coffin, like he never recovered from that, he tapped out of not just that experience but the whole story, and now I know why---

And I also can't stop thinking about Ishmael joking about sailor's wills and these two in particular leaving each other everything and half of what's mine is yours and Queequeg with his coffin saved him
