Imma make my own post on this because I am Tired. So like, please spread this around, if that’s cool.

OKAY! So, you guys may or may not have seen this story going around:

Imma Make My Own Post On This Because I Am Tired. So Like, Please Spread This Around, If Thats Cool.

Text (emphasis mine): “My boyfriend’s family visited the town from the movie Coco. The Grandma explained to them how their town is poor with few resources. Disney interviewed her & her family to use their lives as a plot for their movie and made millions, but Disney is yet to give them a single cent”

Oh no! How terrible! Another case of Disney stealing from people! Right?

Ehhh… no.

I want to look at a few things here.

First off, let’s be clear here–Coco was made by PIXAR, not Disney. Disney owns Pixar, yes, but the production was handled by Pixar, not the company that owns them. Yes, Disney did try to copyright Dia de Muertos for some inane reason, but that was Disney, not Pixar. Disney’s the one who handles the outside bullcrap, not Pixar. Pixar did not try to copyright Dia de Muertos, so don’t try to rope them into this sort of thing. Okay? Okay.

Second… the movie is based on this family’s life? That’s quite the bold claim, given the Rivera family’s history in the movie.

In case you forgot what that was, here’s a rundown:

A man–the great-great-grandfather of the main character in the movie–leaves his wife and child to go with his best friend on a music tour. That friend then murders him, steals his music, and becomes a WORLD-RENOWNED CELEBRITY.

Wow! That’s quite the history!

Soooo… what real-life celebrity murdered this family’s ancestor? Please, tell me. I’d very much like to know.

For real though, if you’ve watched the movie, you know this wasn’t based on anyone’s real life, and to claim so would be absurd.

Next… Lee Unkrich, the movie’s director, outright said this story is false.

Imma Make My Own Post On This Because I Am Tired. So Like, Please Spread This Around, If Thats Cool.

The daughter of one of the character designers has also explained that this whole thing is false. See her videos here!

Another thing that’s not mentioned here–you’ll also hear a claim going around that the families who were interviewed never got credit for what they did. Which, again, if you watch the movie, you’ll know…

Imma Make My Own Post On This Because I Am Tired. So Like, Please Spread This Around, If Thats Cool.

…is a pretty blatant lie. (If you’re having trouble reading the screenshot there, that’s the Special Thanks section from the credits of the movie itself, listing EVERY SINGLE FAMILY AND INDIVIDUAL PERSON THAT WAS INTERVIEWED DURING RESEARCH. No credit, my tail!)

Next, here’s one other interesting little tidbit that few people bring up:

THIS STORY IS NEARLY A YEAR OLD.

Imma Make My Own Post On This Because I Am Tired. So Like, Please Spread This Around, If Thats Cool.

Yes!! This family has been at this for NEARLY A YEAR NOW.

And there’s something else very, very interesting here I would like to point out. Note that the tweet does not say that the plot of Coco was stolen from the family’s life. No–it talks only about the character’s appearance.

Now, think about this for a second. If the entire movie were ripped off of this family’s history, then why would they start off by saying that a character’s appearance was stolen, and nothing else? Why would they wait until NEARLY A YEAR LATER to claim that the whole movie ripped off their family’s history?

Hmm… maybe… just maybe… because their first lie didn’t get enough attention, so they went bigger. And apparently it worked, because no one has shut up about this goshdanged thing.

So in short… learn to distinguish Disney from Pixar, get off Pixar’s backs, stop dragging this beautiful movie, and don’t believe every goshdang thing you read on the internet.
