Series Masterlist

You sat in the back of the lecture room, with tears clouding your vision, unable to see the presentation or the professor. He was teaching in an animated tone and expressive way, and you knew that you should be taking notes for your next exam, but you were too distracted. Your chest was aching, still freshly heartbroken and embarrassed from being stood up on a date the night before.

Kai, a business student and an athlete who you’ve had a crush on for a couple months, decided to ask you out. Excitedly, you went to the restaurant to meet him, but after hours of waiting, he was nowhere to be found. Your waitress was empathetic towards your situation, and had a fresh plate of food packaged to-go sent your way before you left. While you were thankful, you also couldn’t help but feel humiliated by the whole thing. You went back to your apartment, and hadn’t stopped crying since.

You excused yourself from where you sat in the classroom, and exited into the hallway. Walking down to the women’s restroom, you saw Jung Kook, the quiet, handsome pre-law student who always sat next to you, grabbing a snack from the vending machine nearby. After bending down to pick up the protein bar, he straightened up to meet your gaze. He smiled and waved shyly, before noticing a tear slip down your cheek, dropping his lips into frown. You knowingly offered a half-smile in response, cheeks red from embarrassment, before murmuring a quick “sorry” and rushing to the restroom. As you walked quickly and disappeared behind the bathroom door, Jung Kook’s eyes followed you and his heart ached at seeing you cry.

You stood in front of the bathroom mirror and collected yourself, sniffling into a cheap tissue. Repeating to yourself that it’s ok, and that there’s nothing to be ashamed of, you were able to steady your breathing and slow your beating heart. You cursed yourself for being so sensitive, allowing a boy you’ve only had a crush on for just a bit to make you so sad. Forever the romantic, you always jumped in head first with blind optimism, often leading to hurt feelings. But its made you strong and resilient, something that you saw in the mirror as you picked yourself back up, and headed back to class.

Jung Kook had already returned to the room, sitting in the seat next to yours. You joined him, noticing how he didn’t glance over when you sat back down. You were thankful that he didn’t draw attention to you, despite knowing that he saw your tears. When you looked down at workspace in front of you to open your MacBook to begin taking notes, you paused when you saw a neatly placed chocolate bar waiting for you on top of your computer that hadn’t been there when you left.

Your glanced over at Jung Kook, who was staring straight ahead at the professor and bouncing his leg anxiously, avoiding your gaze. You smiled gently and leaned over, close enough so he could hear you whisper, “Thank you. That was really sweet of you, Jung Kook.”

Jung Kook just nodded his head as he felt his cheeks go pink hearing your voice say his name. He kept his attention up front, but unmistakably heard you unwrapping the candy bar. Then, a few seconds later, your perfectly manicured hand was holding a few pieces in his direction, waiting for him to respond.

“Take some.” You whispered, leaning in close to him again. “Let’s share it.”

“Th-Thank you…” Jung Kook whispered back, taking the pieces from your hand. His fingers grazed your soft skin, and he held his breath at the slightest touch.

He smiled softly as you ate the rest, feeling content with himself. You liked it, he thought to himself. Although he internally patted himself on the back for making you a little happier when you were sad, he secretly wished he could’ve done more.

As Jung Kook waited on his dinner to finish cooking in his small apartment kitchen, listening to the sound of bustling city traffic just outside his window, he thought back to that moment. The innocence of it all was still so vivid, despite several years passing. There were many innocent moments like that which he could recall. A mental collection of sorts, boxed up and stored in his memories like film reels that he could hit play on at any time and relive them. Those times were his small way of taking care of you from a distance back then.

He sadly knew, every time he would do something like that, it would never be quite enough. In his eyes, you deserved a man who could do more than buy you a chocolate bar when you were sad. You deserved a man who could give you the world, and then some. He understood he would never, and could never, be that man for you.

But, as he watched Jimin lead you out of his office building, it seemed you had found a man who could. Park Jimin. A man from your world, who can provide for you in the ways Jung Kook knew he lacked. Even if he were to somehow win your heart all those years ago, your family would never approve of a working class man like himself. Now, that he’s able to have an excellent income of his own, you’re already spoken for. It was unfair, but that’s just the way the world always seems to work.

Jung Kook has always been a hard worker. What he lacked in resources, he made up for in practice, high energy, luck, and learning. He took on several jobs, putting himself through undergraduate and graduate school, then on to landing a mentorship with the distinguished lawyer Kim Namjoon, who brought him to his current position. It’s an underdog story, where the boy from the poorer side of town is now a lawyer for wealthy clients, working quickly towards becoming wealthy himself.

Only this wasn’t his ideal underdog story, because in those stories, the underdog gets the girl. His girl had already been won. Seeing you with Jimin made Jung Kook sick to his stomach in sadness, much worse than when he used to see you with Kai, or another boy on campus.

With you, being a beautiful, kind girl, and from a good family, Jung Kook has always been far from the only man who wanted your time. But he always held on to a glimmer of hope that somehow, it would be him. Someday, it would work. But now, he just feels defeated.

He felt guilty about dismissing Namjoon’s concerns, as well. He knew it wasn’t professional, but in the moment, he couldn’t bring himself to deal with any questions. The air was thick and heavy in the office, and Jung Kook felt that the room was spinning. He needed to leave, to be able to breathe and think clearly. But now that he can, his mind is filled with you, you, you. How, after everything he’s been through trying to forget you, could he possibly focus on anything else?

He knew what he needed to do. Pulling out his iPhone, he opened up a new chat to Namjoon.

11:12 p.m. - Hey, it’s Jung Kook. I know it’s late, and I’m sorry. I just wanted to apologize for my behavior today at our meeting. I also wanted to voluntarily recuse myself from the Park Jimin case, and I can explain more if I need to on Monday. Thanks.

——————————————————————————————————

Jimin’s favorite part of making love to you, are the sweet sounds you make. The hotel bed squeaked loudly with each thrust, as Jimin took you from behind, his hands gripping your waist. Your head was thrown into a pillow, in an attempt to muffle your cries, whimpers and whines, and your hands were tightly holding onto the soft sheets. You kept you legs spread and back arched for him, letting your fiancé take you as he wanted.

Each deep stroke was an attempt at an escape. For Jimin, these last few months have been stressful. Taking over his father’s business, getting engaged, and the case against him have piled up on his shoulders, leaving him struggling to breathe. But there’s been a hint of something else, just bubbling under the surface, that only Jimin can see. Looking at the ring on your finger, as you white knuckle the bed sheets, this something looks right back at him.

An engagement ring is meant to be chosen thoughtfully, reflecting well the person who wears it. But this ring is nothing like you; modest, simple, honest, and pure. Instead, it’s gaudy, expensive, and over the top, just like everything else in Jimin’s life. He is sometimes able to see his reflection in its shine, and staring back at him is a hypocrite and a fraud. Everything about this piece of jewelry reminds him of himself, and he hates it.

So, he runs from it; runs from himself, from his father’s gnawing expectations, and towards the only thing that’s ever made sense in his life. You. The beautiful woman he met one cool autumn evening at a charity fundraiser event that both of your families were invited to. The woman he snuck off with, and asked to kiss in private before the night was over. The woman his father approved of, and whose family he had to practically beg to receive their blessing.

The woman who, despite the concerns of others, agreed to marry him as he bent down on one knee, one cozy night at a getaway cabin. That ring now taunts him, and reminds him of everything he pretends to be, but he’ll never truly live up to. .

“J-Jimin….” You whined, pulling him away from his thoughts, as you were clearly lost in the moment. “S’good…”

Jimin reached under you, between your thighs, and began slowly circling your sensitive clit. You whimpered in response, growing louder as the pleasure builds. He desperately needed this; not just a release for himself, but to feel and hear how he makes you feel. A validation, of sorts, that he was doing something right.

“Jimin… Fuck….”

“Shhhhh, just relax, baby.” Jimin said softly, continuing to penetrate deep as his fingers rubbed your sensitive area. “Gonna make you feel good, yeah? Want you to cum for me… Just for me, baby… Let go…”

You whined, the pleasure continuing to build for several moments, until you hit the breaking point. You cried into the pillow, your legs shaking, and Jimin worked you through your high.

“Fuck, baby…” Jimin groaned, picking up his pace as his thrusts grow sloppier. “Not gonna last… About to… Cum… Oh, fuck-”

He pulls out, letting himself spill on your skin. You both steadied your breathing, and Jimin quickly wiped you off and gave a soft nibble to your skin, making you giggle.

“C’mere.” He mumbled as he laid on his back, pulling your naked body close to his. His smile was warm, clearly coming off his high, as he placed a soft kiss to the top of head.

“I love you.” You say, your voice soft and tired.

“I love you, too.”

“You know…” You began, your tone trailing as you find the words. “You don’t have to do that, honey.”

“I know. I’m sorry, I should’ve.”

“It’s just… I’m on the pill, and I wanna feel closer to you.”

“I know, baby. Maybe next time, ok?”

“Ok.” You sighed quietly.

“Did you not enjoy it?” You could hear the sadness in his voice.

“I did.” You said quickly, reassuring him. “Absolutely. It isn’t that, honey. I just wish that, at the end… I could feel you, you know? Maybe I’m being stupid-”

“Hey, you’re not stupid.” Jimin said, cutting off your thought. “Next time, we’ll do that, ok? I want to be closer to you, too, my love.”

Jimin hoped you couldn’t hear the way his heart raced as he said those words. Closer to you. It amazed him how easily he could lie to you. Finishing inside of you would feel so intimate, far more than what he’s ever been able to handle. But how could he have these vulnerable conversations with you, the woman he adores, without hurting you?

“Ok.” You said, and Jimin could tell by your voice you were drifting to sleep.

“Baby, can I ask you a question?”

“Always. What is it?”

“Do you like your engagement ring?”

“Of course.” You smiled, thinking about that night. “It reminds me of you.”

His heart sank. The reason you liked your ring, is for the same reason it mocked him. You confirmed, unknowingly and sweetly, the irony of what should’ve been a reflection of his love for you. It seems apparent to him that this ring, like much else in his life, is a reflection of the love he has of himself.

As you drifted off to sleep, Jimin snuck away from the bedroom. The guilt of leaving you alone after he had just made love to you was small, compared to the guilt of ordering alcohol to the hotel suite. Jimin drank, one glass after another, for the better part of the night.

The engagement, the case, the business, the high expectations, the self loathing, and the imposter syndrome. They all seemed to melt away with the smooth sip of each drink. Slowly, Jimin’s vision turned from blurry to black as he collapsed in a deep, drowsy sleep onto the couch.

The warm, morning sun peeked through the opening of the drawn curtains in your hotel bedroom, covering everything in a glowing light. Your mind slowly awoke, piecing together where you were, and what happened last night. You smiled at the thought, and reached out for your fiancé to hold him. But the side of the bed that was supposed to be his was cold and empty, making you open your eyes and furrow your brows.

You got up slowly, walked out into the living room portion of your suite, and your eyes widened at the bottles of alcohol lining the coffee table. Jimin was there, passed out on the sofa, in a way you haven’t seen in a very long time. It made your chest ache for him, knowing he was slipping back into himself.

“Honey?” You called out to no response. You walked over and kneeled down beside him, brushing his soft, blonde locks from his beautiful face. “Jimin…”

He murmured something under his breath but refused to open his eyes, and moments later, he was back asleep as his body clearly tried to fight off the elevated alcohol levels in his system. You felt your eyes begin to tear up at the man in front of you, confused as to what could’ve sent him spiraling backwards.

“You promised me you wouldn’t do this again, baby.” You whispered through spilling tears, knowing from experience that it was useless. He can’t hear you in his state. “You fucking promised me, Jimin… I-I can’t be around you right now, my love, I’m so sorry.”

With that, you stormed into the bedroom and slid into a quick pair of leggings and a sweatshirt from your suitcase, grabbing your designer bag and phone. You began heading towards the door, but paused, looking back to the man you loved so, incredibly deeply. Not knowing what else to do to, you made your decision to look away from the heartbreaking disaster in front of you. You headed out the door, down the hall, and slipped quickly into the elevator to take you out of the building.

The streets were busy, despite it being so early on a weekend morning. You loved the bustle of the city, as it offered a pleasant distraction. Watching people as you passed each other, you could easily slip into their life through your imagination. What job did they work? Were they single, or with someone? What did they like to eat? Did they have children? You could imagine it all, pretending to be somebody else in your mind, if only for a brief time. It was a coping strategy you learned as a girl, when you wanted to escape your own life, and the irony of it was never lost on you. You weren’t foolish, you saw the way people eyed your designer clothing, and you knew they must wonder what your life was like. They would never really knew that you would trade it all in for theirs, if it meant having a life that was just a little less complicated.

Lost in thought, you had wandered several blocks down from your apartment, just exploring the beautiful neighborhood. You stumbled upon a homey-feeling American diner, with large windows on side, looking somewhat out of place built into the bottom floor of a large, very modern skyscraper. You could see in from where you stood across the street, and watched the staff bring coffee and delicious looking breakfast to each guest. The crosswalk light signaled green, so you began walking towards the restaurant, deciding to grab a bite to eat to clear your head. Maybe I could grab some yummy food for Jimin too, you thought, and talk things over while he sobers up.

You entered through the front door, and the attached bell rang to alert the staff of a new customer.

“Good morning!” A sweet, red headed waitress with an apron tied around her waist called out in a sing-song voice from behind the counter. “Sit anywhere, I’ll bring you a menu!”

“Thank you!” You responded, looking around for a place to sit. It seemed as though the place was a packed house, with every booth being taken.

But there, in the back corner, you spotted a familiar face. Or, what you could catch of his face, as it was buried in his menu, with wide, boyish eyes looking over each option. You were thankful to see him, thinking it an intervention of some sort to keep you from having to be completely alone with your thoughts.

“Excuse me,” You walked over to the waitress who had greeted you. “That man in the corner there is a friend of mine, is he with someone?”

“No ma’am.” She responded, shaking her head. “He likes to come in often and eat by himself.”

“I think I’ll sit with him and surprise him, then. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t interrupting anything.” You smiled, which she returned. “Thank you.”

You made your way over to him, with an unwavering grin on your face. When you arrived by his table, he still hadn’t looked up, lost on the seemingly endless food options on the menu.

“Excuse me, is this seat taken? This place is so busy, I was wondering if I could join you?”

Jung Kook’s eyes widened at the sound of that voice. The voice he would know anywhere, pleasant and gentle.

“Y/N?” He responded, looking up at you. “What are you doing here? A-And of course, please, sit. Um, hi.” He mentally kicked himself for stuttering. Cool. He said sarcastically to himself.

“Hi.” You giggled at his surprised and stumbling reaction. “I just decided to leave the hotel for a bit, and I spotted this place from across the street. It’s so popular, it must be delicious.”

“Mhm, I come here sometimes and it’s always busy.”

“Yeah? The waitress I talked to said she sees you in here often.”

“O-oh… Yeah, I guess she probably does.” Jung Kook said shyly.

You both made small talk over the food, the neighborhood and the local things to do that Jung Kook has discovered in his short time being here. While the conversation itself had little significance, happening over modest diner eggs, toast and coffee, the feeling Jung Kook had was indescribable. He never forgot, even after years of being apart, just how easy it is to have a conversation with you. The way you listen so intently, and keep your attention, as though nothing else in the world mattered. It made him feel so special and seen. Your voice was just as sugary as ever, and your giggles never changed, still able to make his heart race. He wanted to hear that laugh forever, and he wanted to be the man who made it happen.

“Where’s Mr. Park this morning?” Jung Kook asks, suddenly noticing that you were alone.

“Oh, Jimin?” You paused, hesitation not going unnoticed by the perceptive man sitting across from you. “He, um… He just wanted to sleep in. Jet lag and all that, y’know?”

“Oh, right.” Jung Kook nodded, not wanting to dig deeper into your pregnant pause. It isn’t my business, he thought. “He seems like a great guy, by the way. You seem happy.”

“Y-Yeah.” You stuttered, praying tears didn’t come to your eyes. “Jimin’s really amazing, he always has been. But um, what about you, Jung Kook? Are you seeing someone?”

“No.” Jung Kook chuckled, taking a sip of his coffee. “No, I uh… I broke off an engagement back in Korea before moving to the city.”

“You were engaged?” You asked, making sure you heard him correctly. “I’m so sorry to hear that it didn’t work out.”

Jung Kook paused, thinking back to the woman whose heart he broke, as he looked at the woman who he’s always truly loved. You’re the reason I couldn’t love her. He said internally, gazing at your face.

“It’s ok. I just think she wasn’t the one for me.”

“Yeah? It sounds like you believe that everyone has someone perfect out there, just for them.” You said with a smile, and Jung Kook looked at your face, adoring the way the morning sun attached itself to your skin, making you glow. “I think so, too.”

“I’ve always believed that. Everyone deserves to find their happiness.” Jung Kook said, his tone shifting in a way you couldn’t quite place, but his chocolate brown eyes were delicate as he looked at you. He swallowed, his tone heavy yet genuine when he added, “I’m glad you and Jimin found each other.”

Your lips parted, attempting to find words that weren’t there. So you just nodded and offered a polite smile. The silence was thankfully cut short by the waitress, who brought your check. You went to reach for your wallet, but Jung Kook pulled his card out first and laid it onto the table.

“Please, let me.” He said, his voice warm. “We’ll call it a thank you, for surprising me. I’m glad you did.”

“Ok.” You grinned, unsure as to why your cheeks were heating up at his compliment.

While you and Jung Kook were lost in your breakfast and conversation, Jimin had woken up to an empty hotel room. His head ached, but no worse than his chest did when he realized your absence. He had wanted to crawl into bed with you, hold you tight, and apologize for what he had done in the best way he knew how; cover your body with love, and spend the morning buried between your thighs as he pleasured you with kisses and soft, pressured licks.  But when the bed was empty, the panic set in.

Quick thinking led him to go to his phone, and find your location, as you always shared your location with each other. He spotted your little dot on his phone at a diner, just a few blocks away, and Jimin felt a bit of comfort wash over him. She was just hungry. He thought, taking a deep breath. Let’s meet her there, she’ll be surprised.

But what Jimin had not expected, was to see him there. The puppy-eyed lawyer sat across from you, and Jimin could tell even from across the street than the man held on to every word you said. Jimin knew that look well, because it’s how he looks at you, too. Jimin grits his teeth, and sends a quick text message to his main lawyer, Kim Namjoon.

9:11 a.m: Something needs to be done about the new rookie on your team, because spending time alone with my fiancé is wildly inappropriate. See to it that this doesn’t happen again, or I will be finding new representation.

9:12 a.m: *image attached*

Jimin takes one last look at the scene in front of him, and goes back to the hotel room. He orders three more bottles, and passes out once again.

——————————————————————————————————

On Monday morning, Jung Kook was feeling light. He entered his law firm building as he does every day; a freshly pressed black suit on, his dark hair neatly styled, and a cup of coffee in his hand. But this morning, he felt a bit happier, attributing it to a simple breakfast shared with you the weekend prior. He wished he could have breakfast with you every morning, but buried that thought, not daring to spoil his mood with fantasies.

He sat down at his office desk, and began looking through his weekly calendar and emails. This week was the final week or preparation before the Park Jimin case truly begins, and Jung Kook was fully ready to explain to his mentor why he had told him last minute he needed to recuse himself. It would be the right, responsible thing to do, and it would give him space from you. As much as he wished he didn’t need it, he felt that he needed to move on. You found your happiness. It’s time to let you go.

Namjoon entered Jung Kook’s office, and closed the door behind him. Jung Kook looked up at his face, which usually held a gentle, welcoming smile. This morning, however, Namjoon was clenching his jaw like a father who was trying not to explode on his son.

“Jung Kook.” Namjoon said, his voice scarily calm. “I want… No, I need you to be honest with me. What is going on with you and Mr. Park’s fiancé?”

“I’m not sure I know what you’re referring to.” Jung Kook answered professionally, causing Namjoon to roll his eyes.

“For fuck’s sake, kid, drop the act.” Namjoon deep voice was almost a growl. “I’m going to lose out on a top client because you can’t keep your nose where it belongs.”

“What-” Jung Kook was stopped by Namjoon throwing his phone down on his desk, a picture illuminating the screen. Jung Kook squinted at it, to see a photo of himself and you at the diner.

“How did you get this photo?” Jung Kook asked, his heart sinking.

“Mr. Park saw you. He’s furious.” Namjoon explained, pacing back and forth. “He called it ‘wildly inappropriate’, and threatened to find new representation if it happens again.”

“Mr. Kim, I’m so sorry.” Jung Kook panicked. “Please understand, it’s a misunderstanding. Nothing happened, we was just-”

The office door knob turned, and a hush fell over the room. Jimin and yourself stood there at the door, hand in hand. Namjoon and Jimin locked eyes, and Namjoon could see that the client looked worse than he did just a few days prior. Dark, prominent circles were under his eyes, and his hair was slightly messier than before. Jung Kook noticed none of that, however, and stared directly at you.

You were wearing dark sunglasses, with no thought to take them off despite being indoors. Your hair was seemingly brushed quickly, notably and uncharacteristically  not put together well. Your loose fitting clothes seemed carelessly thrown on, not styled perfectly in your usual fashion. You were quiet, head down, tightly holding Jimin’s hand and appeared to make yourself smaller, like you wanted to vanish into thin air. Jung Kook wanted so desperately to bring you in and hold you, shield you from whatever it was that made you look so tired, in such a short amount of time.

“Mr. Park.” Namjoon greeted. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” Jimin responded, his throat sounding hoarse. “I came to fill out any paperwork, and tie up loose ends before we meet again next week.”

“Of course, I was just talking with Mr. Jeon. I’ll be with you in a moment.”

“Mr. Jeon,” Jimin called out, his voice weak. “Mr. Kim informed me you were recusing yourself from my legal team for this case. I just wanted to thank you, for the work you’ve done.”

“Y-You’re welcome, Mr. Park.” Jung Kook said, confused with the kind words. This wasn’t the furious tone that Namjoon had described.

“My love,” Jimin turned to you, his voice extra soft and delicate. “Will you go with Mr. Kim to his office, please? I’ll be there soon, I just wanted to speak to Mr. Jeon privately about the case before he leaves us. I had some questions.”

“Ok.” You said, your voice almost a whisper. Jimin squeezes your hand and kisses the top of your head before turning to Namjoon, who nods in understanding.

“Right this way, Ms. Y/L/N.” Namjoon says gently, leading you out of the office.

When you are out of sight, Jimin turns to you. The fury Namjoon spoke about is now prominent in his eyes, leading Jung Kook to realize that your presence is the thin defense that keeps his anger at bay.

“Jeon Jung Kook.” Jimin spat. “I don’t know where you get off, eyeing up my fiancé in some cheap diner, but if I ever catch you sniffing around her again, I’ll ruin you. Do you understand me?”

“Mr. Park, I never meant to offend you.” Jung Kook said. “Nothing happened. We just bumped into each other.”

“I don’t want excuses, or explanations from you.” Jimin rolled his eyes. “I’m not a fucking idiot Mr. Jeon, I see the way you look at her. I’m warning you, to watch yourself. You’re from Busan, correct?”

“Yes, Mr. Park.”

“Then you know who I am, and who my father is.” Jimin’s voice was dripping in anger. “I will personally see to it that you never represent anyone in our city, or this city again, if you come near her. That’s a promise.”

Jung Kook felt suffocated under the weight of the air and the weight of Jimin’s glare. Even in his disheveled state, his blonde locks dropping to his face couldn’t cover the anger in his eyes. Jimin stormed out of his office, slamming the door behind him, causing other office workers to startle and look into his room. Jung Kook buried his head in his hands, unsure as to what the right path to move forward is.

Jung Kook loathes dating apps. Almost no responses from the women he matches with, the endless swiping, and the few conversations he does have leading nowhere, make it an exhausting experience. He uses it like a game; just another mindless way to distract himself. But, deciding it was time to try to move on again, he finds himself on a Friday night dinner date with a woman, Katie, who actually said yes to meeting up at an upscale restaurant.

She was attractive, he had to admit. Blonde, great smile, and evidently intelligent in the way that she spoke to him from across the table. At least, that’s what he gathered from the little bit he heard. She says works as an assistant curator at the Guggenheim Museum. Namjoon’s type, Jung Kook thought to himself.

The waiter brought bread and wine for the table, and Jung Kook thanked him before trying to listen to the woman in front of him. He felt terrible about this date already; he could tell he wasn’t ready, and it wasn’t right to waste her time. But they’re already here, seated at a table under the dimmed lights of a high class restaurant he wouldn’t usually dine at, so he may as well enjoy his overpriced meal. It would be rude to leave, anyways.

But the exit looked more enticing when you walked through the crowded doorway, as though the universe were determined to punish Jung Kook for sins of a past life. He sat up straighter as he saw your figure trailing behind Jimin. You looked amazing, even from across the room, sporting a red dress that hugged your body in all the right places. Your hair was styled beautifully, and your heels elongated your legs in a way that he knew he could daydream about for weeks.

Jimin walked in front of you, hand intertwined with yours, wearing a cream-colored satin button-down that he had tucked into a perfectly tailored pair of black slacks. He led you through the extensive line of people attempting to get in without a reservation, as though he personally owned the place. The hostess greeted him, and Jung Kook watched as Jimin flashed her a smile and said something briefly, only for her to nod and grab two menus, not checking the list of reservations for a name. A few in line could be seen rolling their eyes and grumbling about the two of you skipping the line and being seated right away, but Jimin paid them no mind as he walked with you to a table just within Jung Kook’s line of sight. The lawyer was thankful that neither of you noticed he was also there, and that his date didn’t seem to notice he was thoroughly distracted from her endless stories.

He watched as Jimin pulled out your chair and helped you in, and leaned down to give you a soft peck on the lips before going to his seat. It had been years since Jung Kook has seen you kiss another man, and he forgot how much it hurt. Especially with the way you look at Jimin, as though he were the only person in the room.

“… So our collections manager, David, was doing condition reports for the Yayoi Kusama piece, and he realized it had been slightly bent during shipping. It was a whole thing for like a week, just trying to get that figured out.” Katie said, oblivious to the state Jung Kook was in as she continued her work stories, and took a bite of her caesar salad.

“I bet that was frustrating.” Jung Kook half-heartedly responded, his eyes continuing to glance over at your table.

He saw Jimin reach into his pocket to pull our his iPhone, and flash you an apologetic smile. Your fiancé’s lips formed a quick “I’m so sorry, honey” before getting up from the table and taking the call outside, leaving you sitting alone. You sadly picked at your caprese salad meant for two with your fork, making Jung Kook frown.

“It was super frustrating.” Katie laughed. “But, it’s solved now. What about your work? I’m sure you have lots of frustrating cases and clients.”

“Yeah.” Jung Kook chuckled, before stabbing a piece of his tortellini with his fork. “You could definitely put it that way.”

“Wanna talk about it?” She asked, reading the change in his mood.

“I mean, I can’t really. Confidentiality, y'know.”

“Oh, right. Ok.” She responded awkwardly, taking another bite of her food.

Jung Kook glanced outside, noticing Jimin running his fingers through his blonde locks and speaking animatedly in apparent growing frustration with whoever was on the other side of the call. He hung up seconds later, anger clearly painted on his face. Jimin went back to the table, bumping into people on his way back in, and you attempted to talk to him while he sat down, but Jung Kook couldn’t make out what you were saying from his distance. Jimin shook his head, not meeting your gaze, and got up once again moment later, but this time heading towards the restaurant’s bar. Your waiter came by right as Jimin left, and Jung Kook watched you flash him a sad yet dignified, rehearsed smile. It was one he’s seen before; you were trying to keep it together.

“Are you alright?” Katies question broke through to him.

“I’m alright. I’m sorry, I’ve just… Been distracted lately. Work stress, with my clients.” Jung Kook admitted. “I’m sorry if you’re not having a good night.”

“No, please, it’s totally ok. I understand.” She said, her eyes somehow balancing both empathy and flirtation. “Do you wanna just get out of here?”

He read between the lines and knew what she was really asking. Do you want to sleep with me tonight? He thought for a second, glancing over at you, sitting alone. What could he do? If he tried to talk to you, Jimin would have him fired from his firm without hesitation. Besides, he needed to move on. This wasn’t exactly that, per se, but maybe it could be a step.

“Yeah.” Jung Kook said, nodding as though trying to convince himself of what he was agreeing to. “Yeah, let’s get out of here. I’ll grab the check. My place?”

“Sounds great.” She said with a grin.

He flagged down the waiter to ask for the check, ready to escape the restaurant, and his pained heart, even if just for the night. The pair got up from their table, and he sweetly held out his hand for her to take. As they began walking towards the front door to exit, Jung Kook’s eyes involuntarily looked over at you once last time. He immediately wished he hadn’t, when he noticed your gaze was already set on him.

You gave him a half-smile, and a brief but polite wave. You noticed the gorgeous woman he was with, and the way their hands interlocked. I thought he said he wasn’t seeing anyone. You thought to yourself, and you wondered why there was a small, yet noticeable, pain in your chest. She’s really pretty.

You chalked up the lingering sadness in your heart to being left alone by your fiancé, who was still seated at the bar, with several drinks too many in his system. Watching from your table, you noticed for the first time since being seated that it had started to rain. You watched as Jung Kook hailed a yellow cab, and opened the door for his date, ushering her in before following her into the back seat.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

“God, it’s so good….” Katie groaned, grinding on Jung Kook’s length. He had his hands on her hips, trying to focus on anything that could bring him into the moment. Touching her clit, thrusting into her, watching the way her perky breasts bounced as she moved. She was attractive, and not bad in bed by any means, but Jung Kook just wasn’t there.

His thoughts kept creeping back to you in the restaurant. How sad you looked, and how Jimin had left you alone to drink at the bar. It made him ache for you, but it also began to make him grow frustrated. It just wasn’t fair.  He never would’ve left you alone. He would’ve stayed with you all night, caressed the back of your hand as he held it, and told you a thousand times how beautiful you look. He would’ve pulled your chair close to his, so he could whisper sweet and dirty things into your ear, earning himself some of your sweet, shy giggles that he adores so much. He would’ve made you feel special and beautiful, because you are. He would’ve told you he loves you, because he does, he always has, and it’s clear to him that he always will.

He would’ve taken you home, taken you to bed, and touched you in a tender way that made you feel sexy and wanted. He would’ve treated you right, for as long as you’d let him.

Just thinking about what he would do to you, if only he could, had him groaning. He closed his eyes and pictured that she were you, clenching tightly around him. It would’ve brought him shame, if his conscious weren’t so clouded by a sweet, unattainable fantasy.

“F-Fuck…” He groaned, biting his tongue just in time as he tried not to say your name.

He could imagine your soft skin, and how he’d kiss every inch of your body. How he’d wrap his lips around your breasts, and take his time turning you on. He imagined that you are sensitive on your neck, and how he’d leave love marks on your skin, so everyone would finally know you were his and his only. Like righting a cosmic wrong, just as it always should've been.

“Fuck, baby girl, this pussy is fucking incredible-” His voice was almost a growl. Repositioning Katie so she was bent over in front of him on her knees, her face buried in the pillow, he began his deep strokes and tightly held her hips. Her eyes rolled back and she moaned, not knowing where the sudden burst of passion was coming from, but not wanting to question it when it felt so good.

His eyes shut once more, his lips parted and head thrown back, as he finally lost himself in pleasure. The key was you, just like it always is. He fantasized about taking you like this, his cock going places so deep, all you can think about was him. His pace picked up, and Katie cried loudly as she came.

“Baby girl…. Fuck…. That’s my girl….So good to me…” Jung Kook groaned, picturing your face contorted in pleasure as he chased his own high. Katie probably thought the sweet nicknames and praises were for her, but Jung Kook had no capacity to feel bad. Not when a release was finally so close.

With a few more sloppy thrusts, Jung Kook spills into his condom with a heavy moan. Sweat was beating down his golden-tone body and face, and he shook as he orgasmed hard. It was the most intense, pulsing orgasm he had in a very long time. His breath was heavy, and as he was coming down and back to reality, all he wanted was to hold you and pepper your exhausted, spent body with love, kissing any place where his touches were a little rough, and take care of his one and only love.

But Katie wasn’t you. His love wasn’t actually here. You were somewhere with your fiancé, maybe even being touched and held by him the same way that Jung Kook holds you in his dreams. He looks down to see another woman, and his heart breaks again.

“That was… wow.” Katie said in an amazed tone, just as Jung Kook slips out of her, allowing her to roll on her back. She yawned, and Jung Kook unfortunately knew she would want to stay the night.

“Yeah… That was great.” He said, hoping his voice was at least somewhat convincing in agreeing with her sentiment.

She fell asleep next to him shortly after, and Jung Kook stayed awake, despite his body being completely maxed out. He tried to move on, to distract himself from you once again, and it failed. He reflected on years of trying, including moving to a new country, a new city, a new job, a failed engagement and now laying in bed with a gorgeous woman who he just had sex with… and all he could think of, throughout this time, was you.

All he ever wanted, was the beautiful girl who stole his heart on a college campus in Busan several years ago.

—————————————————————————————————————————

You stormed into the hotel room, your tears flooding down your face and your cheeks red and hot with frustration and sadness. Jimin, intoxicated to the point of no return, stumbled roughly in after you. His shirt unbuttoned and untucked, and his hair was a mess. During your ride back home, Jimin had attempted to pull you in, but in your disappointment and anger, you rejected him, leading to Jimin’s insecurities taking full control. If he were sober, he’d beat himself up internally, call himself every name in the book, and beg you for another chance. But after finding himself at the bottom of many drinks, all he could feel is pain.

“H-Honey…” He called, sadness in his voice, as he used the wall to keep himself up. “Don’t be mad, my angel.”

“Do not call me that. You fucking swore to me you wouldn’t do this anymore. I trusted you.” You cried, your tone wavering. “I’m so angry with you right now, Jimin. I can’t even look at you.”

Jimin opened his mouth to answer, but he felt a sickness bubbling in his stomach. He pushed past you abruptly to find the bed, collapsing onto the mattress. His lips parted and let out a groan, feeling a burning in his body.

“C’mere,” Jimin called for you, his eyes squeezed shut to block out any light. You stood there staring at the man you loved, your mascara running down your cheeks. “Let me… Please, let me hold you, ok? Want you… My pretty girl…”

His voice drifted off and his words made you sob, covering your mouth to muffle the sound. This was a road you’ve been down before, and it always ended in heartbreak. Jimin called for you like this when he was spiraling. Even in his inebriated state, he reached for you, asking you to stay beside him.

One thing always struck you hard in these moments, urging your heart to shatter; he asked to hold you. He never asked for you to hold him, to comfort him, to take away his pain. He always asked to hold you. Maybe it was because he was afraid that if he didn’t pull you close, you’d slip away. Maybe it was to keep you together, when watching him drink himself into oblivion was clearly breaking you. Or maybe it was to subconsciously shield you from the damage he was doing, like a scared child trying to protect his caretaker from danger. But what can you do when the person protecting you, is also the one doing the damage?

“Jimin, I…” You began, your voice cracking. You didn’t know where to start, or even if he’d hear you. “I don’t know what to do anymore.”

He didn’t answer. His chest was moving, an indication that he was breathing, but the Jimin you know and adore above anything else, clearly isn’t in the room. You keep talking, unsure of how much he actually hears.

“You need help, my love. Help that I can’t give you. I love you so, so much.” You smiled to yourself, recalling a sweet memory. “Remember the night we saw each other at the charity event? It was the first time since we were kids. You made me laugh so much, baby, remember? We snuck off, ran away from the crowded building, and wandered off to the beach. Then we heard our fathers calling for us, and you kissed me by the ocean before taking me back. They were so mad at us, weren’t they?”

You let out a sad chuckle at the memory, before your face dropped. You recounted how that moment, like so many with Jimin, were burning, bright red flags hidden so well by sweet words and soft kisses.

“I didn’t know at the time why your father was so much more angry than mine, but now I know. He thought you had ran off to drink yourself sick again, didn’t he? He was so worried and scared, because he does love you, Jimin. I know you get upset with him, and I know what he said to you on the phone tonight wasn’t ok, but…”

You paused when you heard a snore. Jimin was out for the night, passed out on the bed without taking off any of his clothes. You sighed, also feeling exhausted. Emotionally, mentally, spiritually. He was with you in the room, but you felt so alone. He heard none of what you said, and you were doubtful he’d remember anything in the morning. You wondered how many nights, conversations, fights and romantic moments together, were lost at the bottom of a bottle, just like this, over the time you’ve been with him.

You wanted to cry, but there were no tears left. It was just a deep, unyielding sadness.

“You’re going to get better, baby.” You said, letting your words float in the air with no destination. “You have to be better… Because I’m scared of what happens if you don’t.”
