In The Wreckage
Eight days. It’s been eight days since the horror of Season 4 dropped on us unexpectedly, messing up all of our plans to watch together, with personalized marshmallows (thanks, @jjmazzy) and Veronica-themed food. And while we all knew that we were going to lose someone, I don’t think anyone was ready for what we got, or how poorly it would be done.
What I also never expected was a season that made me:
1. Wish that we’d never clamored for more Veronica Mars after MKAT;
2. Wonder if I could actually still enjoy old VM canon, since what S4 did to Veronica and her story was so awful.
I came across a Hulu forum (again, thanks, @jjmazzy ) and wrote more than I’ve been able to write in the last 8 days, explaining my unhappiness and my hope that Rob Thomas is not allowed to bring any more Veronica Mars canon to life, but it may have been too long and the damn thing won’t post. So, I’m sharing here, under the cut, to at least get this off my chest.

The mark of good writing is that you are angry at the characters for the decisions they make, not the writers for having the characters make those decisions
Here’s the core issue (in my opinion): Rob Thomas sees Veronica as a compelling character people feel for when she’s an underdog who is hardened by tragedy. The more tragedy, the more he believes we root for her.
The fans, in reality, see Veronica as tough and damaged whether she has added personal tragedy or not, and what makes her compelling as a character is her hardened exterior MIXED with her ability to attract and (try to) maintain relationships with characters around her who support and love her.
Not to say Veronica shouldn’t face any conflict, and not to say she shouldn’t face loss, or struggle (did she not do that already with the Keith storyline this season?)
But she’s not compelling simply because everything in her life sucks and she CAN’T find happiness.
She’s compelling because things in her life have been hard but she moves forward deep down actually believing she can find happiness and GROWS from her past and LEARNS to love and move past her tragedies, while STILL being a badass bitch. She may not admit it, but she has always wanted love and friendship and support, even if she fucks it up or doesn’t know what to do with it.
It’s her COMPLEXITY that’s interesting. Kristen Bell said “with no conflict, you have no show.” But with no growth, you have no protagonist worth rooting for.
And conflict doesn’t have to equal one of the only people she ever truly loved being blown to smitherines.
Logan was a person who helped her figure out who she was and what she wanted from life by being active in it. By killing him, he’s little more than a plot device used to what? Motivate her to what? Keep doing what she always does?
