peak character design

In your opinion, what makes a good or bad character design? Which comics, cartoons, etc. have the best character designs? Which have the worst character designs?

I think what makes a design good or bad really depends on the designs purpose and style, and by definition a bad design is a design that fails at this goal and runs contrast to the styles strengths. A colorful neon punk character is probably not something well fitted for a black and white detective story, but would look quite on brand in an intense fast paced cyberpunk novel that only needs a few illustrations of the character. A style that looks amazing with wavy flowing fabric would looks pretty awful drawing a DC type of hero in tight spandex and clean cut strong colored color pallet. This doesn’t mean the artist can’t draw X thing. It just means an artist as part of their tool kit have different styles for different feel and genre they want thing to give off in their work and with experience most artists pick up on this. I think we all have seen artist redraw memes where in the old image that character design just looks awful. Everything is messy, non of the colors works together, nothing leads the eyes in an organic way.  But then in the redraw. Despite on paper the design being the same it now looks amazing. Sure a better pose helps a lot, but I think a lot of it has to do with the artists style having evolved into something that benefits design elements they like. So now the design compliments the style instead of fighting it making everything just feel so much better and coherent. Because no one deserves getting randomly roasted for no reason let’s use me as an example. Ancient cat boi OC redrawn in 30 seconds VS the nightmare we shall never mention again.  If you ever read one of those awful 10 THINGS TO NEVER DO OR YOUR OC IS A MARE SUE!!! lists. He pretty much is every single one of them. A generic two eye colored white fem boi cat. But with my many years of never letting go of my love of cute animu bois with extra ears my style is now something way better suited to these types of designs so now he doesn’t look half bad.

Shudder So that’s my TED talk. Most “bad” character designs are just ill fitted for their usage or haven’t had the right style found to compliment it.
