Blayke J Morris, Florida inmate B71117, born 2003, incarceration intake July 2021 at age 18, scheduled for release May 2040

Attempted Murder, Poessision of an Illeagal Weapon

In May 2020, a teenage couple from Florida were arrested on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting the young woman's former boyfriend in the face.

Kayla Rittenhouse, 18, and Blayke Morris, 17, both were taken into custody.

Besides the attempted murder charge, Morris also faces additional counts of possession of a short barrel shotgun and possession of a firearm by a minor.

According to a statement from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home at around 6.30am after receiving reports of a shooting.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Rittenhouse’s ex-boyfriend, aged 21, arrived at her home that morning to reconcile with her and ‘settle some personal differences’ with her new boyfriend, Morris.

The victim was standing in the driveway of Rittenhouse’s home and speaking to her from 20 feet away when Morris, who was said to be 'laying in wait' behind a wheeled trash can, emerged from his hiding place brandishing a sawed-off shotgun and opened fire on his romantic rival.

The round struck the victim in the face, inflicting a serous injury. He was rushed to a area hospital.

According to an arrest report, the victim's father was sitting in his car parked outside Rittenhouse's home and witnessed his son getting shot.

The woman's relatives, including her grandmother and sister, were also present at the scene at the time of the confrontation.

When interviewed by investigators, Morris claimed that the victim had made threats prior to the incident.

Morris also told the cops that Rittenhouse knew that he had bought the sawed-off shotgun, and that she told him if her ex-boyfriend came onto the property 'to shoot him.'

Video recorded on Rittenhouse's cellphone captured a portion of her exchange with her ex-boyfriend leading up to the shooting. In it, the victim told the teen that he wanted to reconcile with her and 'did not wish to harm her.'

According to the police report, when Morris emerged from his hiding place armed with the shotgun, the victim told him, 'Oh, you're gonna shoot me?' and took his hands out of his pockets. He had nothing in his hands.

When the gunshot went off, striking the victim in the face, he was standing 25 feet away from Morris and 20 feet away from Rittenhouse.

The arrest report stated that the 18-year-old girl was 'not being threatened by the victim...', meaning that 'there was no legitimate claim of self-defense' by either Rittenhouse or Morris.

After more than a year of proceedings, Morris was convicted in June 2021. No charges were filed against Rittenhouse.

Brandon Vandenburg,Tennessee Inmate 547159, born 1993, incarceration intake in December 2015 at age 22, scheduled for release December 2032

Aggravated Rape, Aggravated Sexual Battery

of the “Vanderbilt University Gang Rape”

On June 23, 2013, Vandenburg, one of four Vanderbilt Commodores football team players, carried an unconscious 21-year-old female student into a dorm room. They gang-raped and sodomized her, slapped her, inserted their fingers in her, and sat on her face as she was on the floor in a 32-minute attack. They took over 40 graphic photos, and took videos of the rape with cell phones. The victim told the court that after on particular player raped her, he urinated on her face.

Prosecutors sought the upper end of the 15- to 25-year range of possible prison time for Vandenburg’s convictions of aggravated rape, aggravated sexual battery and unlawful photography. But they did not put an exact number on how much time behind bars they believed was enough.

The Judge agreed with the state on those two points. And before he handed down the 17-year term, he also noted that 23-year-old Vandenburg had community support and seemed remorseful. The sentence does not include parole eligibility, meaning Vandenburg must serve all 17 years. He is already on the sex offender registry and will be there for life based on his crimes.

Two family friends and a jailhouse minister took the witness stand. They said they believed Vandenburg was not dangerous and could be rehabilitated after prison. More than 30 letters were sent to the judge in support of Vandenburg, lawyers said. Shawna Vandenburg, who has attended nearly all of her son’s court hearings, did not testify on his behalf. Vandenburg’s lawyer and family friend Albert Perez Jr. said she would have been too emotional to do so.

Vandenburg himself, a one-time top football recruit at tight end, echoed that, begging for mercy and asking the victim, whom he formerly dated, for forgiveness.

Towering at 6 feet 6 inches tall, Vandenburg addressed the judge with little emotion, flanked by his lawyers, He apologized to the victim publicly for the first time. But he also said his actions were out of character and he was an inexperienced drinker under the influence of alcohol. He said his actions ruined many lives.

“It seems inadequate to try to explain how this all happened,” he said. “I go over and over this in my mind and try and replay what could have been done to prevent the events of that night.

“I am ashamed of myself that I was so irresponsible with alcohol, which led to something tragic.”

Two separate Nashville juries have found the California native guilty for his role, for bringing the woman into his dorm in the early morning hours of June 23, 2013, and encouraging the sexual assault.

After the sentencing hearing, prosecutors pledged to sexual assault victims that the legal system is on their side and this case, particularly its three-year lifespan in the court system, is not typical.

Sentence was appealed.  Once all appeals were exhausted, the sentence remained unchanged.

Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles, Texas inmate 02456398, born 1989, incarceration intake July 2023 at age 33, sentenced to life

Capital Murder

Relatives of Grizelda Hernandez and little Dominic Alexander Hernandez burst into tears upon hearing the sentence of life in prison without parole awarded by the jury in the double murder trial of Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles on Monday in the 49th Court before Judge Joe Lopez.

In July 2023, relatives of Grizelda Hernandez and little Dominic Alexander Hernandez burst into tears upon hearing the sentence of life in prison without parole awarded by the jury in the double murder trial of Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles in the 49th Court before Judge Joe Lopez.

Lopez then read the two capital murder charges and the result for each one was term of life without possibility of parole.

"Your sentence will start immediately," Judge Lopez said.

The trial for this case began on June 26, five years after the murders were committed.

More than 20 witnesses including relatives, friends, law enforcement agents and forensic experts were called to testify on behalf of the prosecution.

The testimonies revealed the alleged presence of Burgos-Aviles at Father McNaboe Park the day and time the double homicide was committed, his participation in reporting the crime, the lack of care in preserving the crime scene, and a DNA study that proved him to be the biological father of little Dominic, among other information that will help the jury determine the defendant's innocence or guilt.

The District Attorney said that Burgos-Avilés took advantage of his skills and his training as a law enforcement agent to carry out the perfect crime in a brushy area.
