too late. it was already said. they splintered through your heart and mind and made your ears ring. something about those words he’d uttered, the tone he’d used, drove you to breaking point.

you didn’t hear what he was saying, pleadingly, as you unhooked your coat from beside the door and slid it on, angrily snatching the house keys and your phone from the pocket, teeth gritted.

you felt him grab your arm, just before you could step outside. it was a firm movement, and while usually, his touch would make you feel comforted, right now, his hand burned your skin.

The first time you noticed a change with Jungkook was towards the end of summer before classes started again. It was late evening. The last of the summer heat for the day drawn away and the cool breeze from the open window crept in. You shifted closer to Jungkook, feeling the warmth of his body radiate off him to you. His body temperature always running a tad bit higher than yours and you would tease him about it. He’d joke and say that it’s because your heart was so cold and his was warm. He had been  your best friend for as long as you could remember. There was nothing that you two didn’t know about each other. It started off as your typical night with Jungkook, watching movies on the couch in the living room of his house. You had cuddled him before, something that was nothing more than an innocent gesture between both of you. Yet that night was different. When you moved closer to him he stiffened, and though you had barely brushed against him a loud groan escaped his lips before he collapsed from the couch on to the ground. He keeled over grasping at his wrist, his breathing erratic.

You were just sipping on your morning espresso, sitting in your favorite coffee shop while reading your favorite book of all time when the familiar annoying voice of your childhood best friend rang in your ear. You look up, finding the hateful smirk on his lips that you desperately want to strangle off of him, more for interrupting your sacred solitude morning routine—well not really solitude since you did promise him breakfast before class today. But as per usual, he just had to steal the glass you had in your grasps, sipping on the tasteful liquid while scrunching his eyebrows on your choice of reads.

“Isn’t it too early for The Great Gatsby in such a wonderful morning?”

“Isn’t it getting too old for you to keep drinking my coffee?” You bite back in the same bratty manner he displays. Jungkook chuckles, resting the cup back with a slight grimace. Probably because the coffee is tad too bitter for a sweet-crazed tooth like him. “You don’t even like espresso. I don’t even know why you always want a taste of my coffee.”

You leaned back with a sigh and threw your notebook on the coffee table. Knowing you needed a well deserved break from studying you decide to head down to the local coffee shop for a caffeine boost.

You emit a big loud yawn and walk to your room down the hall. You decide to exchange your sweatpants with some jeans and put on a bra for the first time that weekend. You give a small huff in the mirror noticing you still look a bit ragged, but who cares? Your not trying to impress anyone and your definitely not trying to turn any heads.

After breaking up with your long term, long distance boyfriend you felt like your life was on hold. You thought you were going to marry this man, have his children in fact. But the sad truth was he had cheated on you and you couldnt let that stand, so you left. Feeling emotionally bruised and sore you had holed up in your on-campus apartment and tried to forget by studying and binging on chinese food for the last few weeks.

The only thing that brought you any joy nowadays was getting some coffee a few blocks down from where you lived. It may have seemed like a small excursion but it got you out of the house and let you take in a fresh breath of air, somehow restoring your will to stand on this planet.

But you would be lying if that was the only reason you visited that coffee shop. Every so often a black haired man at a small table next to the window would be working on his laptop, to say he was handsome was an understatement.

He was jarringly handsome and if you were lucky you would catch eyes with him, only to be completely embarrassed when he caught you staring. But that didnt stop you from looking for him every time you went to the shop only to be met with those dark doe eyes.
