Ugh, I'm tired of hearing people say 'Atsushi shouldn't be the protagonist, he's hardly even relevant anymore!' and stuff. Listen to me: BSD is an ensemble story. There are four or more main characters, with alternating POVs, no clear protagonist, and the audience can (and are intended to) get invested in any and all of the characters, since they're all unique and have interesting dynamics and appeals.

I see everyone thinking about it in terms of just 'Atsushi can't be considered the protagonist' or 'Dazai should be the protagonist'.

No, Atsushi was our starting POV and generally the main character for the first season or two, because we had to get introduced to the world and our ensemble's characters. Atsushi starts out as the audience meeting all the ADA's characters and understanding abilities and the rules of the Agency, and then we start panning out to other characters, like how there are a few scenes, even in season one between Dazai and the Port Mafia, because more can be told about them and their backstories in scenes between them, or like in season two in the fight with Lovecraft and Steinbeck vs. Naomi, Haruno, Tanizaki and Kunikida. Atsushi wasn't relevant there at all, he was just supposed to pick Naomi and Haruno up from the station before Q intervened and started a whole different fight. Then in season 4, everyone got separated and Atsushi couldn't always be in the spotlight because we had to continue telling the stories of other characters, but he couldn't be there to watch them.

Not to mention, another reason for Atsushi losing relevance is because more and more characters are being introduced. Characters like Atsushi, Yosano, Kyouka and so on are being pushed out of the spotlight because new characters, like the Decay and the Hunting Dogs, are taking the spotlight with all their infighting and interesting characters the audience wants to know more about.

Don't get me wrong, by the way; that IS a problem. Asagiri has put in so many characters he doesn't have time to develop all of them. But people saying Atsushi should be included more just because he's the main character, or that he should have never been in the story, don't seem to understand that he's only one protagonist. He's served his purpose of introducing the starting characters to the readers/viewers. Do I think he still has tons of character development potential and that he shouldn't just be thrown away? Hell yes, but most people are picking sides on this based off of the black-and-white assumption that Atsushi is THE protagonist and that he should either be gotten rid of for a different one or stay that way.

Page two: Present Phoenix is smiling sadly, facing away from the viewer at Miles. Phoenix: “haha Pretty pathetic, huh?” Miles reacts with an uncomfortable shift while looking at Phoenix. They look away from each other in silence. Miles, facing away from viewer: “You’re not pathetic, Wright.” Phoenix twitches with a guilty expression. A memory of Miles sitting at his desk with crumpled paper all over the desk. He is crying with a blank expression while holding a pen over a sheet of paper. Miles: “I was too deep in my own pain that [red text] I justified disregarding everyone and everything else… I was a coward and ran away without saying a word. [end red text] How can one not feel grief from such selfishness?” Page two end.

Page three: Miles, facing away from the viewer, looks down. Miles “… Wright, I’m sorry for running away. I’m sorry for abandoning everything I used to be… For abandoning you.” Phoenix is surprised. Phoenix then puts his hand on Miles’ shoulder and Miles looks up at him. Phoenix: “I’m sorry for abandoning you, too, Edgeworth… And I’m sorry for saying those horrible things to you.” Page three end.

Page four: Phoenix starts to lean closer to Miles with tears in his eyes. Miles’ expression stiffens. Phoenix: “ I… I don’t want to lose you again.” Phoenix is right in front of Miles’ face and a tear falls. Phoenix: “I’m glad you came back, Edgeworth.” Phoenix hugs Miles and they start crying. Phoenix: “ I missed you…” Page four end.

Page five: Doodles of different scenarios. Top left: Miles is holding Phoenix’s arm while looking away and blushing. Phoenix is shocked, but smiling. Miles: “W-Wright… Would you like to have dinner together?” Phoenix: “HUH?! Oh- um… Yeah!!” Top right: Miles is looking away and holding his right arm. He looks pained. Phoenix is looking at Miles with a worried expression. Miles’ thought: “How could I have done that? He must be so disappointed in me… It’d be better if I wasn’t here.” Phoenix’s thought: “Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re stronger than you think, Edgeworth.” Bottom left: Phoenix is facing the viewer with a scared expression, sweating. Miles is glaring at Phoenix from behind with a menacing aura around him. Some of my opinions/thoughts below! I tried my best to make it make sense-- 🙇🏻‍♀️

There was supposed to be a whole scene where Miles calls Phoenix, they talk over the phone for a bit, and decide to meet up. I didn't know what they'd say and I didn't the energy, so I skipped to their conversation-- 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Also, I was skimming through case 1-5 again and I noticed that Miles was actually very open and communicative about what he was feeling and going through. Even Phoenix (and everyone tbh) noticed how badly Miles was suffering. They saw it with their own eyes, too. I hear a lot of people in the fandom talk about how Miles doesn't communicate his feelings at all, so I was surprised to see that.

Although it doesn't excuse Miles hurting his friends, it made me understand more of why Miles probably felt alone and had to deal with his problems himself. It'd be hard to trust people/ask for help when they've either betrayed you in some of the worst ways possible, ignored you, minimized your feelings, or is a literal child. I love Lana, but imo she was probably one of the worst person at the time to be the one telling Miles to trust people. From Miles' POV she just betrayed and traumatized him, so I find it hard to think that Miles could listen to her about trust even if he wanted to.

Even with Phoenix. They're not close at this time and so far, no fault on Phoenix, Miles hasn't had many good experiences with Phoenix in adulthood. Yes, Phoenix solved DL-6, which Miles seems really grateful for, but he leaves Miles to deal with the aftermath alone. Of course, it's hard to know how to help someone suffering with trauma. (I really don't like the whole "saving" Miles from his trauma, cuz you can't just do that?? Like they both say that... 🤨) Regardless, Miles didn't really have anyone he felt like he could trust there. At least according to the games, Phoenix drops everything because Maya left. He didn't get in contact with Miles until case 1-5. Throughout the OG trilogy, Phoenix thinks a lot of things, but rarely says them out loud to comfort/reassure his friends. It's common for people to be uncomfortable with having to verbally comfort others so they choose to not say anything at all, but that will have its consequences, too.

I like to think that they did apologize to each other or something. Phoenix seems to put in more effort to verbally show his concern and comforts Miles. He even thought about "hugging it out" with Miles when he thought that Miles would need it. That scene was so cute 🥺

I get that realistically, a lot of people struggle with proper communication, but people have the ability to learn and grow, so I want to portray these characters with that in mind. They don't have to be perfect, but they don't have to be completely toxic either. I like it when characters like each other (romantically or platonically) and actually show it. Which I do notice that AA portrays a lot! I do think the characters could be a bit harsh to each other for no reason, too, but that's just me cuz I'm sensitive-- 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ lol I haven't gotten into AJAA yet, but I did see some scenes. I love how Miles and Phoenix could just have random conversations now. They seem so much more comfortable with each other than the earlier games. I want to see more of how the all of the characters' relationships changed over time throughout the games! 😆🤲 (Might take forever cuz my brain is already bursting with just part of the 1st trilogy)

Chocolate, Horror and confessions.

There were few things akutagawa truly hated. Things like smoke, himself and people who left the book open on the desk inside a library. But something he hated the most was talking on the phone. It filled him with the not needed dread of socializing.

Don't get him wrong, if it's for work purposes with things he had already scripted in his mind to say then akutagawa is a pro in talking on the phone, but if it's chatting for the sake of talking then texting was what he liked to do. Everyone knew that, nakahara-san, his sister gin and even his boss mori-san.

He had hoped his work partner would realize this but from what akutagawa could gather, the weretiger obviously didn't get the memo. Always calling akutagawa up instead of texting. It has been a while since his.. Death, their victory..and His revival and everything was finally going back to normalcy well except the fact that the weretiger now knew where he lived, has his phone number, knew akutagawa on a personal level and most importantly... The fact that they don't dislike each other to that level anymore. Again don't get akutagawa wrong. He still doesn't like the weretiger but he won't kill him.

Actually that's what he did after their 6 month battle, that ended in a draw. A very awkward emotional draw. All that was not the point. The main problem was at the moment, atsushi and his constant need to call akutagawa even if the information passed could be easily passed by texting.

"Soooo... What are we going to do? I mean we can watch a movie?" Atsushi awkwardly insisted. It was one of their unusual post-mission time together, it has started after their battle. When both the party called in a permanent truce. At first akutagawa was irritated that the weretiger wanted to do mundane things after the mission, useless things that wasted his time. But after the third unusual post-mission time. He just didn't question it.

"Of course, what do you want to watch?" Akutagawa played along again before he can ask the question in his mind. Atsushi thought about it.

"What about horror?" Akutagawa blinked. Horror? That's a genre, he wasn't expecting atsushi to choose. The boy was sunshine and rainbows personified on the outside tragic comedy on the inside. Horror was more so his abilities thing. Akutagawa hoped beast beneath the moonlight wasn't the one choosing the movie.

"Sure" Akutagawa replied before adding "do you want something to eat and drink Perhaps?" It was always evident when the weretiger of his was hungry. Atsushi nodded, pointing at the coco packets with a smile that said 'you know what I want'. akutagawa rolled his eyes, he almost regrets making atsushi hot chocolate in one of his earlier stays. The tiger wouldn't stop asking for more after that. "Fine, hot chocolate it is"

"Yes!" Atsushi practically jumped into the couch, getting ready for the horror movie night. Tsk, what type of animal was akutagawa harbouring inside his house? Akutagawa shaked his head before walking towards the kitchen and making a what atsushi desires, if you had come to akutagawa before he had joined the battle against fukuchi and told him that one day he would be making food and watching movies with the weretiger. Akutagawa would have stabbed the person... But things have changed, they have changed, this... Relationship has changed.

Akutagawa could feel eyes on him as he added extra chocolate in atsushi's cup. Knowing the boy had sweet tooth well that's something both of them had in common. Suger was like luxury for them. Akutagawa blow some air onto his own mug that was very hot for him. Before putting the two mugs on a trey and giving it to atsushi, who had already chosen a movie for them to watch. It was a romantic-horror.

"Fancy" Atsushi stated taking his mug from the trey. Akutagawa gave a unimpressed stare "only you can call something as a trey fancy, weretiger"

Atsushi pouted but didn't argue back. Drinking his hot chocolate with a small smile, switching on the movie. The intro begun, introducing all the characters. Two boys raising a little girl, living together. Akutagawa was reminded of kyoka with how innocent the girls opening lines were.

"This was the movie ranpo-san recommend to me, the one I told you about on the phone" Atsushi explained, akutagawa blinked. Oh right the phone. How could he forget?

"Noted. Speaking of the phone... Why do you always call instead of texting?" Akutagawa asked putting his mug on the table as the movie introduced the lore behind some type of enrich creatures. The monster of the story. "Half the things you say can be typed out you know?"

Atsushi slurped his drink "why not?" Akutagawa frowned at the question before answering "because I don't like it"

"You don't like talking to me?" Atsushi sounded almost sad. Akutagawa lightly shook his head, the movie showed how the boys were childhood friends and one of them lost his parents, become the legal guardian of his sister. Giving a vague idea, that the parents were killed by.... Something.

"No, I don't like talking on the phone with anyone" Akutagawa explained "it's a waste of time" He added as the movie gave a surprise jump scare, akutagawa did not shreak or at least if he did, he hopped atsushi who seemed unaffected by the jump scare didn't notice.

"Okay then... I will just start texting" Atsushi took the last sips of his drink as they fell into an unexpected silence. The movie was alright at the most, the only thing good about it was the family dynamic between the boys and the sister. It was evident that the boys had a crush on each other.

"I.. Like your voice tho" Atsushi said catching akutagawa off guard, totally crushing his guard down enough so That---another jumpscare.

"ShiT-" akutagawa physically jumped up, atsushi putting his arms around akutagawa this time. Akutagawa blinked. He just got spooked by a shitty horror movie. Atsushi chuckled a little as akutagawa glared at him. "That was YOUR fault!"

"My fault? How so?" Atsushi was still chuckling before looking at akutagawa with humor in his eyes. Akutagawa glared harder, feeling something warm inside. How can someone like his raspy voice?

"You said you like my voice, it made my guard drop!" Akutagawa confessed. Atsushi raised an eyebrow "so? I was saying what I meant. I like hearing your voice, that's why I always call you. I like hearing you, I lik--" Akutagawa suddenly put his hand on top of atsushi's mouth.

"Shut up"

Akutagawa decided that the weretiger was mad, akutagawa was NOT blushing or flustered. If the weretiger said so, he was misinterpreting his facial expressions.

"I was about to say hot chocolate, lawnmower" Atsushi mumbled under the palm. Akutagawa looked away.

"You like my raspy voice weretiger?" Akutagawa asked unimpressed. "You must be bad of hearing, why would you like my voice of all things?"

"It's not only that, it's also hot chocolate" Atsushi defending, mouth still under his palm, voice still muffled but audible to akutagawa. Akutagawa took a deep breath. Heart beating to fast for his liking. He just recovered from a disease, he doesn't want heart problem's now.

"Well even my sister loves my hot chocolate, so you aren't special in that category weretiger" Akutagawa explained removing his palm. Before looking at the reveal of the boys being in love with each other. Akutagawa couldn't even pay attention properly.

"Why would you like my voice?" He finally asked, as the movie continued to show the boys hunting down the creature and saving the girl.

"Because I like you"

Akutagawa head sharply turned towards atsushi. What? Why would--how did--did akutagawa-- so many questions that akutagawa seemed to already know the answer to. "Why would you fall for me?"

Atsushi stared at akutagawa, Mismatched eyes never looked so uneven before. "I ask myself that everyday. Maybe it's because you died for me, maybe because you are pretty, maybe it's because you are my equal, maybe it's because you have changed so much it makes me proud, maybe it's because you saved me so many times, maybe it's because I gave a vow to myself to protect you after I got you back, maybe it's because we are spending so much time together in which I properly know you now... Honestly I don't know. I just know that I do"

Akutagawa took a shaky breath in. Does he love the weretiger?, he doesn't know. They have spend enough time for akutagawa to know which brand of chocolate atsushi likes, what type of movies he usually watches, after he came back atsushi was the one he felt the most safe with, he did save atsushi against his own mind because his heart suddenly bled out to save someone other then gin, he has changed alot with how proudly nakahara-san boasted about him, they truly are equal.. Each other's equal. Did akutagawa love him back?

The movies epilogue took place but neither of them paid attention. Akutagawa's left out chocolate was cold now, but he still paid no attention to drink it. "How did you know, you like me?" He asked out.

Atsushi shrugged "I just feel happy when I am with you, comfortable and I just want you" It sounded very sentimental. This was probably akutagawa's own horror movie. Romantic-horror. The end credits of the movie started to play. Did atsushi recited this? Was he planning on confessing soon? Did akutagawa like him back?

Akutagawa also feels comfortable with atsushi, enough to have once talked about the slums. Akutagawa also feels happy with atsushi when the said boy is giving comfort or is just simply acting like an idiot... Did akutagawa want atsushi? How can someone who has never seen love, confirm that? Curse the tiger for making him feel these things!

"Do you like me back" Atsushi nervously asked, breaking the laid back persona he was holding for the past few moments. He was suddenly nervous as hell and it was showing. Akutagawa was honestly impressied he wasn't a wreck till now, maybe it's because atsushi was sure of his own Feelings while replying to akutagawa's questions. "Akutagawa... Do you?"----Akutagawa is many things. Impulse being one, indirect being one.

So he wasn't surprised when instead of relying with I don't really know, he just kissed atsushi. Well more like gave him a small peak on the lips.. With his lips. Atsushi stared back stunned, now being the one with no words. A few minutes passed by and atsushi licked his lips.

" Chocolate" Atsushi whispered before smiling like a love sick idiot. Akutagawa looked away, okay Maybe he was flustered.

"I don't know" Akutagawa confessed "I don't know if I like you... But what I make you feel, you make me feel... So I will say perhaps I do"

Atsushi stared before smiling gently. Everything was alright. They could go slow, with many hot chocolate dates, movie nights and each other.

"That's all I need to know for now, akutagawa"
