hey y'all, I’ve been bad at speaking up about this considering it is something that effects women like me (though I might not live there anymore), so I just want to take a moment to talk about what is currently happening to women in Mexico. this is going to be a long post so i apologize in advance but please read to the end !!

some of you may have heard of the marches women in Mexico have been partaking in since the beginning of this year, but for those of you who don’t I’ll explain a little: all across the country, men have been taking part in femicides (murdering of women and girls for no reason other than their gender, they can include a variety of other assaults such as beatings and rape). The youngest of these reported victims was a one year old girl, and the oldest an 80 year old woman. in 2019 alone, about 106 women and girls were reported dead as victims of this hate crime. A lot of people would turn the other way and claim this is not a stat to worry about. I offer you this: in 2020, because of COVID-19 restrictions forcing people into unsafe domestic environments, more than a thousand women have suffered the same fate. In July alone, 103 femicides were reported. 

In response, women have organized multiple marches to rally support and, hopefully, action against people who perpetrate such femicides. Sadly, a lot of these marches and their messages were brushed aside as just another instance of “women being dramatic.” However, these women are fighting for their life and safety and take it very seriously. Here is a picture of a little girl marching with a sign that says “I don’t want them to kill me.”

Because Mexico is a country that follows patriarchal ideas, both in tradition and in culture, the majority of these murderers have been allowed to walk free and face no repercussions. The president has also disregarded the issue and said that 90% of these claims are “false” which has definitely not helped this movement of gender equality.
