Vampire weaknesses

Garlic  (Allium sativum) - Traditional Eastern European ward against vampires.  Works in Dracula, Blade, and the TV show Forever Knight.   

Wild Roses - Traditional Eastern European ward against vampires.  It will keep a vampire confined to their grave.  Works in Dracula, Fright Night: Part 2 (1988), and Dracula The Series (1990s version).

Vervain AKA Verbena - In Vampire Diaries it wards off vampires.   In some folklore a tea brewed from this will ward off vampires.

Paprika - Was a weakness of vampires in one short story.

Hawthorne - Harmful to vampires in Hammer’s Satanic Rites of Dracula. 

Wood - In some lore such as Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula books wood is a serious weakness to vampires because it is “something that was once alive transformed into something else.”   In other vampire fictions it has to be a particular wood such as white ash (Vampire Diaries), or yew, or Hawthorn, or Oak, ect…

Iron - Usually only works against faeries but recently was made a weakness of Anne Rice’s vampires as it can restrain them or block their psychic powers.  In some early werewolf lore iron would also work before silver became the more popular weakness.  

Silver - Traditional folkloric weakness, dating back to the old overlap with werewolf lore when it was believed a werewolf would come back from the dead as a vampire.  Comes up in Hammer Horror films such as Satanic Rites of Dracula, and the TV show Dark Shadows as well as the 2012 Dark Shadows movie.   

Poppy seeds - Vampires tend to obsessively compulsively count grains and particularly poppy seeds. This actually comes up in Dracula 2: The Ascension, and the 1990s Dracula The series, and the Fright Night comic books. They also obsessively unwravel knotted rope.  (Also comes up in Dracula: 2 The Ascension.  

Wolfsbane - Again coming from the werewolf / Vampire overlap dating back to folklore where it was believed a werewolf would come back from the dead as a vampire, wolfsbane was a common weakness of both, especially of vampires that can take wolf form (such as Dracula).   This weakness comes up in the 1931 film Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. 

Sunlight - Though the idea that vampires burn in the sun is a purely Hollywood invention, vampires being weaker by daylight and preferring the night does stem back to the original Carmilla novel and Dracula novel.   It’s also indicated that Dracula cannot take animal or mist form during daylight hours and is substantially weaker by day, and bothered by the brightness of daylight even if it does not kill him.

Symbols of Faith - Eastern European, and irish-Catholic folklore along with many examples of pop culture.  This one can possibly be psychosomatic.  Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula books presented the theory that as vampires are highly psychic this also makes them very suggestible to psychic influence of the beliefs of others.  It makes sense in regard to things like the original 1985 Fright Night where Faith was required for the crucifix to work against Jerry Dandridge. 

At least five of these weaknesses are herbs and another is tree bark.    

Conclusion:   Vampires are just nerds with allergies.
