emperor!gojo whose frequent visits to you come to an end, forcing you to move from his chambers and back to the consortsâ pavilion.

There was a time when you had everything. A place to call home in the Inner Court, a beautiful palace with anything you could have ever dreamed of. Servants, admirers, riches; you had it all. But what was most dear to you was your loverâ a man so divine, many thought he was directly blessed by the hand of God. It was too good to be true. A woman of lowly birth like you, paid as homage for the sins of her clan against the new reigning family of Japan, becoming a concubine of the Heavenly Emperor.Â
You remembered it all too well.
His brilliant mind that once strategized the downfall of the previous imperial family, calculating its next move in a game of Go against you. You can still remember the shock on his face upon his first defeat. The way he would keep you from leaving to fulfill your other duties until he was satisfied, eyebrows furrowing as he struggled to keep up with you. No matter how hard he tried, you remained victorious. It drove him mad.
You remembered the stolen kisses while you made your rounds in the Inner Palace with your ladies in waiting. It took you quite a while to learn to tune out their giggles every time the Emperor dips you down to taste your lips in broad daylight. The grin that he wore after was enough to leave your legs weak.
Above all, you'll always remember how safe you felt in his strong, reassuring embrace. Youâve seen him train, and it was no wonder the Gojo clan rose to power so quickly as a result of one man. The way he wields the katana is unlike any man on the face of the earth. Those arms were your sanctuary. You can still vividly recall the attempt on your life, orchestrated by a traditionalist incensed by the Gojo clan's swift ascent to power. The emperor, outraged by the assassination plot, personally saw to the man's execution.Â
However, the damage was done and it caused great strain in the Imperial Palace.
To appease the old geezers that were forced out of power, Emperor Gojo had taken in another concubine from one of the Big Three families of Japanâ a beautiful Zenin girl. Her flowing, silky hair and saccharine voice enchanted everyone in the Inner Palace, captivating the Emperor, most of all. She was younger than you, with perkier breasts and soft skin that was enough to capture the attention of any man.Â
You donât blame her for taking the Emperorâs attention away. Though you would be a liar if you said it did not hurt you. Deep down, you cannot deny the agony that sears your soul, realizing that the only semblance of love you've ever tasted remains unrequited. With a heavy heart, you resign yourself to the bitter truth of your existence, knowing all too well the cruel confines of your place in this world.
You were merely a pawn, and the Emperor did not want you anymore.
That was made clear months later when you received a scroll from the Emperorâs advisor, a man you were once well acquainted with, Geto Suguru.Â
âWhat is this?â You asked him quietly, your heart silently begging the Heavens it was not what you had suspected it to be. The black haired man in front of you does not respond, and you feel something pierce into your heart. Despite being a part of the Emperorâs court, it was rare that you received letters directly.
Your suspicions were confirmed when your shaky hands finally opened the scroll to read the familiar kanji written by your beloved.
âThe Emperor decrees the termination of your role as concubine." Geto spares you the trouble of deciphering the characters neatly written in ink. âIn his mercy, you are to be moved as a servant in the Outer Court. You are to serve the Imperial Physician.â
What you remember most was the silence. The Emperorâs silence after the stressful months you had to endure alone. The silence shared between you and Geto when you were forced out of the Imperial Court. All that was left was the sound of your heart breaking and the wood creaking underneath Getoâs feet as he walked away. Satoru never bothered to see you off.

Seasons change and by the next spring, youâre busying your hands with collecting herbs for the Imperial Physician, a man by the name of Yaga Masamichi. He is a kind man, pitying you enough to fill your days with laborious tasks to prevent your mind from wandering to thoughts of the unfortunate turn your life has taken. He is even generous enough to supply you with a new wardrobe of clothing full of light fabrics, a luxury you thought you would lose in the Outer Palace. Though the initial humiliation has worn off with the passing of time, you are still constantly reminded of your fall from grace.
Looks by the mix of condolences and disgust are shared when you roam the walls of the Outer Palace. You hear whispers of how the Emperor is infatuated with his newer, shinier toy. It is enough for you to swallow the bile that makes its way up your throat.Â
âIt is no wonder the Emperor tossed away a wildflower like her in exchange for a cherry blossom. He needed someone to rival his own greatness.â A particular comment stopped you in your tracks. Your grip tightens on the woven basket in your hand filled with medicinal herbs you had collected earlier that morning.Â
âHave some pity on her.â Another eunuch whispers. Your breath falters, but you continue your walk with your head held up. Youâve heard the rumors. The beautiful Zenin Himiko has charmed the Emperor enough that there are rumors of a royal marriage to come. It doesnât help that the Emperor has remained monogamous to her since he had banished you from his court.
A comforting hand links itself with your arm, âIgnore them. I saw Yaga shooing away a crowd of suitors that were lined up for your hand.â Ieiri Shoko scoffs, secretly sending you a wink. She has been studying medicine under Yaga for nearly a decade, eagerly accepting you as a companion upon your arrival. You feel your cheeks heat up at her flattery. You know sheâs just trying to make you feel better.
Although your beauty never faded, it seems as though you are no longer sought after in the marriage market. Not that it matters, considering the new life that youâre living. Youâre now a personal servant to the Imperial Physician, leaving no time to worry about suitors and such. Your days are filled with good workâ tending to Yagaâs cherished garden that he has sowed for decades rather than frivolous games and attending the Emperor. It may not be glorious compared to your former life, but it was the best a woman of your status could receive.Â
When you and Shoko return to Yagaâs estate, youâre surprised to see the somber look that has settled on his aging features. Shoko makes an offhand comment that he will age faster if he keeps scowling. She receives a scolding.
âIs something the matter?â You gently place down your basket full of herbs.Â
Yaga sighs, calloused hands rolling up a scroll with the Imperial Seal. âIt appears the Emperorâs consort has fallen ill and His Majesty commands my presence in the Imperial Palace.âÂ
The Royal Consort. The woman that dethroned you: Zenin Himiko.
âI understand.â You nod, maintaining your composure while two sets of eyes scrutinize you with keen observation. It was only natural the emperor wanted the best doctor in the country for his object of affection. âShall I close up the shop while you journey into the Inner Palace?âÂ
Yaga shakes his head, âThat wonât be necessary. I will have Shoko act as my stand-in.â He remarks with a quick glance in her direction âYou, on the other hand, will accompany me.âÂ
Your eyes widen.Â
âYou cannot be serious.â
âTypically, one of my apprentices would accompany me on such journeys. However, now that I have acquired a personal attendant,â He gestures towards you with a flick of his hand, âIt shall no longer be necessary.â As he speaks, he runs his hand absentmindedly through his well trimmed beard, gaging your reaction.
"Iâ" Your words falter and fade away. "Yes, sir," you respond, inclining your head in deference, a stark reminder of your place. While you may have concealed it, you were seething with humiliation. Returning to the Imperial Palace after a year of exile to serve the woman who took your spot was mortifying beyond measure.
âVery well. Pack enough for one weekâs time. I doubt the Emperor would have called me if this was a light ailment.â He says gruffly. âWe leave at dawn.â His gaze shifted to the horizon outside.

âYour Grace,â You purr at the feeling of his large hands scratching your head.Â
The smile that rests on his face is almost ravenous. âYes, my love?â
âI thinkââ A soft sigh escapes your lips when he presses on your weak points. âI should g-go.â
His ministrations stop almost immediately.Â
âGo?â His eyes peer down at you in his lap. It is now that you realize the weight of his piercing gaze. âHave I commanded you to leave yet?â
âNo, butââ
âThen you have nowhere else to be.â He huffs, unintentionally puffing his cheeks out. You stifle the giggle that nearly escapes from your lips. He vaguely resembles a pufferfishâ or so you think. Though youâve never seen the round creature with your very own eyes, youâve heard that the delicacy was something only members of the aristocratic class would feast on.Â
Your mouth waters at the thought.
âWhat are you thinking about that could possibly be so important? Keep your eyes on me,â A strong hand squishes your cheeks together and firmly guides your face back upon him.Â
You should be embarrassed; ashamed at the intimate position His Majesty has trapped you in. The way your head is tucked away in his lap as he peers down at you, nothing to shield you away from him. It was incredibly scandalous, considering that you were an unmarried woman! But it seemed like the Emperor had taken no mind towards it. You would even dare to say that he was enjoying it, with the way his lips quirk upward at the sight of you squirming.Â
âYour Grace,â You repeat, determined to free yourself from his hold. His eyebrows furrow.
âSatoru,â He reminds you. You purse your lips. The position you hold in his court is simply not high enough to grant you the privilege of calling him by his given name.
âYour Grace,â You try again, the title rolling off of your tongue naturally. A man like him did not deserve any title less than.
âYouâre breaking my heart, sweetheart. Indulge a man, wonât you?â He pouts down at you. As stubborn as ever, you donât relent.
âI would be overstepping my boundaries as your consort to call you as such. That privilege is reserved for your future bride.â You take advantage of his guard let down to sit up and escape his hold. If he could have caught you, he made no effort.
âI am a simple man.â He follows you to your vanity. A giggle escapes your mouth. He is anything but. âI want my love to call me by my name.âÂ
You turn around to cup his cheek. He eagerly leans into your touch, sighing happily at the contact.
âI wonder how Lord Kento and Geto would react to you like this.â You tease, a smile unknowingly painting itself on your lips.Â
Satoruâs face falls, features morphing into an appalled expression. You watch him close the distance between you through the mirror.
âKento?â His voice had a dangerous lilt in it. You blink, unsure what spurred on the sudden tension in the room. âSince when were you so comfortable around him? He cannot satisfy you like I can.â He reminds you of the manâs castrated state as an eunuch. You wince.
âI have not gotten comfortable,â Youâre careful to pick your words. Gojoâs possessiveness was something that was not easily tamed. âHe simply provides good conversation while you are away. The palace is far too big and lonely while youâre away dealing with clan matters.âÂ
The only response you get is a quiet grumble. âYouâre lucky that youâre pretty.â His large hand creeps its way into your hair again, undoing the hairstyle your ladies in waiting had spent a copious amount of time on earlier that morning. Gojo carefully plucks the extravagant silver hairpin from your hair, the dangling pearls clicking softly at the sudden movement. His hands slowly make their way down to the kimono that you are wearing, hands ready to undo the obi.
Your hands softly hover his, âI fear that our roles have been reversed. Should it not be me who gets you unready, Your Grace?â
He chuckles and through the mirror you can see a smirk make his way to his lips, âIâd let you undress me any day. Just say the word, beloved.âÂ
You roll your eyes, but allow him to continue. It was moments like these with the Emperor that led you on to believe that there was a semblance of love between the two of you.Â
How wrong you were.

PRESENT DAY
The sun has yet to meet the horizon when you arrive at the Inner Palace. The horse-drawn carriage that you and Yaga had taken is the only sound at the scene, clopping down the stone road and back to the Inner Court. You miss the serenity of the beautiful palace you once resided in, knowing that it will be bustling with life in just a few short hours.
In front of the large doors of the primary ceremonial hall where the Emperor spends most of his time, stands Lord Nanami, a counsellor to the Emperor himself. Time has only made his face sterner, but his neatly styled hair and blue and yellow dyed court attire remained the same. He waits patiently while you and Yaga make your way up the flight up stairs that lead up to the hall.
âI am glad to see you in good health, Yaga.â Nanami bows.Â
The man next to you promptly waves his politeness off, thanking him for his hospitality. You stand silently while the two men engage in conversation regally.
Lord Nanami sighs, âHis Majesty has been plagued by stress lately. To say I am relieved by your presence would be an understatement.â His statement is a subtle reminder that you must harden your heart upon entering the palace walls. The meticulously built walls were no longer a sanctuary for you, rather, a painful testament that you were no longer wanted.Â
Yaga lets out a hearty laugh and it reveals a rare sight, Lord Nanamiâs lips curving upwards by a slight. âI highly doubt the boy would be glad to see me. The appearance of the Imperial Physician is portentous.â He scratches his beard. You tilt your head in confusion at how he referred to the Emperor.
âI suppose, yet I am intrigued to find out how he will react upon seeing his object of affection flourishing anew despite the sting of frost.â Nanami audibly wonders. Even a fool could understand his eloquent comparison. The Emperor would be thrilled to see his consort in full bloom once again. You pray that the Heavens would grant you some mercy from witnessing such a scene.
âYouth,â Yaga shakes his head, chuckling to himself before regaining composure. âI mustn't keep the Emperor waiting. [Name], please gather the herbal ingredients to treat the young Consort as you seem fit. I shall confer with His Majesty and meet you in her chambers to declare a proper diagnosis.â
You bow, âYes sir.â
While Yaga prepares to enter the doors where The Heavenly Emperor resides, your eyes couldnât help but gaze longingly at the large bronze doors.Â
âYou seem well,â Nanami addresses you for the first time in over a year. Your eyes trail from the Emperorâs door to the blonde man in front of you. âAllow me to guide you to our herbal stock.â Nanami offers you his arm as you start to make your way down the stairs.Â
You take it, lightly holding his arm. âThank you, Lord Nanami. Time away from the Inner Palace has been like a breath of fresh air,â You respond, ensuring your voice carries no malice. You hear the large palace doors from behind you open, the metal creaking loudly in the quiet dawn.Â
âI must ask you to call me Kento,â He leads you down the stone steps. âWe are old friends, it is strange to hear anything but.âÂ
You focus on your steps down the stairs, only responding once your feet meet the solid ground, âI fear that our social statuses have changed since then. It would be the cause of a scandal should anyone hear I am calling the Imperial Counselor by his given name. Your admirers would have my head on a stick.â
âYour imagination is amusing as always, [Name].â He gives you a closed eyes smile. You huff.
âI am only speaking the truth!â You insist. He chuckles.
âIt is quite refreshing to see both you and Yaga again. Iâm not sure how long it has been since I have been at the imperial physician.âÂ
You gape at his confession. âYou mustn't skip your annual visits to the physician, Kento. It is in the best interest of your health!â You lightly scold him, lifting your hand to flick his forehead. It was a force of habit. âPerhaps if I have time after treating the Consort, I shall do a check up on you.â
Nanami clears his throat at your comment, the twinkle in his eyes dissipating as if your direct touch had burned him.Â
âI would rather not lose my head.â He mumbles, eyes scanning the courtyard around the two of you. You knit your eyebrows, confused.

Nanami leaves you to fulfill his duties once you arrive at the Royal Kitchens to retrieve all the necessary items to treat Consort Himiko. You are glad that he did not accompany you into the kitchens to prepare Consort Himikoâs herbal soup.Â
The memory of it still irks you.
âYouâre late,â One of Consort Himikoâs ladies in waiting snaps just as you enter the kitchen. You look up to see a young girl, dressed in a light purple kimono. It must be Himikoâs signature, you note. It was strange to see someone outside of the Imperial family donning the color, but you suppose it was only a grand display of Himikoâs influence.
âYouâre a lot more plain than I anticipated,â The other lady in waiting quirks an eyebrow, eyeing your appearance. You furrow your eyebrows, shocked by their rudeness.Their undying loyalty to their Lady was enough to fuel an unspoken hatred for you. Though youâre not sure that the two coincide, you donât blame them.
The two are mixing a concoction that you donât recognize to be used to treat the sick. The taller one adds some aromatics and herbs in and you see the other one unwrap a cloth to reveal a rare delicacy from the West. Cocoa, you believed they called it.Â
Then it hits youâ the two are not making a medicinal soup for their Lady, rather they are making an aphrodisiac! The image that conjures in your head makes you blanch. Back in the Outer Palace, Shoko had shown you the effects of the stimulant (you shiver at the memory of her shoving a treat laced with it into your mouth). It was certainly a night to remember.
âHow pathetic,â You mutter underneath your breath, quickly rushing to obtain the ingredients you needed without making conversation with the two girls.
Fortunately, they pay you no further attention for the time youâre in the kitchen.
âPlease excuse me,â You bow upon entering the Emperorâs chambers. Despite the Consortâs Pavilion being similar in size to a small town, you remember spending most of your time in the Emperorâs chambers rather than your own. It was probably the same case with Consort Himiko. You slowly place the tray carrying broth and medicinal herbs to treat the Consort down on the circular wooden table in the middle of the room.
Out of curiosity, your eyes canât help but soak in the Emperorâs room. Not much has changed since youâve left. His Majestyâs preference for minimalist decorations have stayed the same, along with his natural musk that fills your nose. You feel your face heat up at your own thoughts. How could you think of such a thing when you are about to meet his new lover?
Your gaze moves to his bed, where Consort Himiko residesâ only to find nothing.
âHuh?âÂ
You observe his bed, silk sheets neatly made, seemingly untouched. The sounds of your sock clad feet patter on the wooden floor as you make your way to feel the bedsheets for any signs of warmth, but you are met with nothing.
âDonât you know that entering the Emperorâs chambers can be punishable by death?â A deep voice from behind you causes you to jump in your spot.Â
Your guard is immediately raised, head whipping to the sound. In hindsight, you should have never agreed to accompany Yaga on his trip. It was a foolish idea all along, you think as all of the air in your lungs dissipates upon seeing your former lover.Â
Standing at the entrance of his own sleeping quarters is Gojo Satoru, his frame big enough to tower over the doorway. His arms are crossed over each other, electric blue eyes focused on nothing else but you. You press your thighs together tightly to avoid squirming anymore than you are. He has loosened his dark blue kimono to expose some of his hardened chest, a sight any woman in the nation would die to catch a glimpse. Even underneath all of the fabric, anyone can see his divinely sculpted physique.
âYour Grace,â You waste no time to dip your body deeply, praying that he will allow you to keep your head by sunset. âI apologize for the intrusion, I was under the pretense that Consort Himiko resided in your quartersââ Your voice loses itself in your throat when you see his shadow quickly encroaching.
âHimiko stays in her Pavilion,â He towers over you, eyes gazing down on you. âBut one might suspect that you already knew that.â
Your eyes frantically meet his feet, desperate to salvage what was left of your dignity, âI assure you that I speak of the truth, Your Majesty.â
When he doesnât respond, you slowly lift your head.
The flustered look on your face must have been amusing to him, as he makes his way closer to you, bending down to interrogate you further.
âIs that so?â He hums, enjoying every second of cornering you into his chambers. The back of your legs have met his bed, trapping you. You inhale sharply, trying to keep your breaths even, refusing to give him the satisfaction of knowing the effect he had on you.
He continues, âYouâre awfully skittish for someone who was happily skipping around my territory in the arms of another man just earlier.â His predatory gaze seems to darken.Â
âKento?â When his name leaves your lips, the man in front of you grits his teeth. You turn your head to the side, deliberately avoiding him. âWith all due respect, Your Majesty, but I donât see how Kento and Iâs relationship is any of your concern,â He does not take your actions well, his gaze searing into you.
âIt certainly is when the woman in question is you,â Gojoâs voice loses its feral lilt, distress flashing across his face. Thereâs a newfound desperation in it that chips away at your resolve. His hand raises to your face so slowly, as if he did not want to startle you.
âThis is wrong. Iâ I saw a couple of servants earlier making aphrodisiacs, perhaps you could have unknowingly consumed them.â You tell him, frantic eyes meeting him. It is not unusual for couples to use aphrodisiacs, you know that after under Yaga. The Emperor must have mistaken the laced dessert for his usual.Â
He shakes his head, running a hand through his white hair.
âYou are mistaken. This is solely your effect on me.â He promises. You could barely believe his words, stuck between feeling offended or shocked.
âHow could you stand to be so cruel?â Your voice is barely above a whisper. There are no tears in your eyes this time. âI am not a courtesan you can buy for the night,â You snap, pointing a harsh finger to his chest.Â
âWhat do you mean?â He sounds breathless.
âWhatever do I mean?â You scoff, a dry laugh escaping your mouth. âFor a year, all I have gotten is pity from the world, because you decided I was no longer entertaining. You could have at least banished me away yourself. Instead, you sent Suguru who couldnât even look me in the eye! Donât you know how humiliating that is?â With every word that left your lips, more venom seemed to drip. Anger was prickling you all over, taking control of the rational part of you.
Gojo seemed to be taken aback by your outburst. It was far too late to take anything back now. If you lose your head by nightfall, so be it.
You dig a deeper grave for yourself when you take advantage of his moment of weakness to flee. Heâs quick to react, attempting to grip your wrist.
âWait, [Name], belovedââ He uses that all too familiar term of endearment, but it doesn't deter you.
You accidentally bump into the circular wooden table placed in the middle of the room. What an awful place to keep it, watching in horror as the Consortâs medicine shatters on the floor. To add salt to the wound, a vase you recognize to be specially gifted to the Emperor from a foreign nation tips off too before you can catch it. The sound of porcelain shattering fills the room.
â[Name]! Are you alright?â You hear Gojo ask from behind you, but you run over the broken shards before he can catch you.
Had you bothered to pay closer attention, you would have noticed articles of your clothing and a couple of your missing belongings littered all over the roomâ creating a faux impression that you never really left the palace.

Days passed by after the incident, and luckily, your head was still attached to your body despite offending and nearly endangering the Emperor. Yagaâs disappointment when you had told him what happened was made evident when he sent you home early after hearing the events that transpired, insisting that he can handle the Consort on his own. Normally you would have argued, but you knew better than to inflict Yagaâs wrath.
âNow youâve really done it,â Shoko whistles lowly, walking in from the front of Yagaâs shop.Â
You hide your face in your hands, âI made an absolute fool of myself, didnât I?â
âA fool? No. A conspirator against the Emperor? Perhaps.â She dangles a scroll with a familiar seal on it. The Gojo Clanâs familiar emblem reflects off of the sunlight spilling into the room. Your heart drops.
âOh, theyâll have my head.â You moan, hands instinctively lifting to shield your neck.
âThough Iâm quite impressed that Yaga only sent you back here. He used to have worse punishments.â She shudders before impatiently unraveling the scroll. You watch her eyes gradually widen as they read the contents of the letter. The scroll falls from her hand.
You rush to it, desperate to read your fate.
To [Last Name] [First Name],
Greetings and prosperity unto you.
By the mandate of the heavens and the authority vested in Us, We hereby extend Our solemn words to you, [Last Name] [First Name], servant of the realm, in acknowledgement of your debt to the Empire.
In response to your unmeritorious deeds, The Emperor bestows upon you His imperial pardon from capital punishment. In consideration of your obligations and the harmony of the realm, it is hereby decreed that you shall serve as an indentured servant to the Imperial Household for a period commensurate with your debt. During this time, you shall labor faithfully and diligently under the supervision of Our Heavenly Emperor, performing duties essential to the welfare of the Empire.
By fulfilling your obligations with diligence and humility, you may yet earn favor and esteem in Our sight.
The Imperial Court
A loud gasp escapes your mouth.
You feel your legs weaken, your emotions running wild. Shokoâs eyes meet yours, mirroring your frantic gaze. In that moment, you are met with the same suffocating sense of hopelessness.

extra!
gojo was kicking his feet happily as he watched suguru draft out his letter to you. suguru thought it rather cruel, while the white haired male was too busy purring happily as he fantasized about having you back into his grasp.

SYNOPSIS. in which comfort should never be this hard to ask for, especially knowing that your boyfriend would give up the entire world for you either way. PAIRING. choi seungcheol x gn!reader GENRE. fluff, hurt/comfort, lil angst WARNINGS. mentions n descriptions of depression n reader struggling with it, cheol lifts up reader's shirt a lil to touch them (nothing sexual abt it, just purely for intimacy), terms of endearment, kissing, all the dialogue is literally from cheol lol, very self-indulgent sorry :< WORD COUNT. 1.8k
notes: the cuddly boyfriend in bed chronicles w cheol continues! anyway this is written purely for comfort for my lovely @bookyeom <3 honestly i've been writing a lot of hurt/comfort lately which i love (and need) ugh, so i hope u guys find some comfort in it too đ

Time seems to stand still when it happens againđthe emptiness, the weight of it all pressing down on your chest. It begins as a subtle shift, like the soft whisper of a breeze before a storm, until it grows into a deafening roar and becomes the only thing you can hear.
It's as if you hear everything and nothing at once, see the scenes play around you but the colours are mute, touch the world but its textures are rough, taste the air but its flavour is a metallic tang to your tongue.
You could claim you're simply sad; perhaps, it's easier to say that instead of the monstrously ugly word of depression. You hate it. You hate the way it shrinks and folds you into a smaller, duller version of yourself. It steals the vibrancy from your eyes, the cadence from your voice, and the lift at your lips. It steals you away from yourself, and each time you manage to get away you feel like you can breathe again, but then the tide rolls back in, and you're drowning again.
Struggling to stay afloat has been getting a lot harder these days.
A few soft knocks draws your eyes open, and the abrupt quietness of your bedroom suddenly feels more safer than ever. The knocks come back again, a bit louder this time, a raspy groan leaving your lips as you attempt to tightly squeeze your eyes shut like the sounds were just a figment of imagination. But then they happen again, and you somehow deduce the urge to chuck your pillow away and sit up in bed instead.
You barely process the feeling of your feet reaching the bedroom floor below. It's somewhere between the hours of six in the evening and three in the morning, you think. The cold hitting your skin and the dark skies outside the windows don't really help at all.
God, your body felt so weak right now since you've hardly eaten the entire day, and each step you took felt like a hot poker burning into your skin. The knocking seems to grow more insistent the closer you got to the door, and it takes an eternity for you to finally reach out for it with a clammy hand. And slowly, hesitantly, you flips the locks and push it open, allowing the door to swing open into the dimly lit hallway beyond.
Seungcheol is standing there, breathless like he had just run a marathon with small beads of sweat and strands of hair clinging to his forehead. The only source of light coming from the overhead hallway light shines down on him like a spotlight.
"You... You weren't answering my calls all day," he says quickly, voice wavering and heavy. "I came here as fast as I could after work and I..."
His voice trails off when his gaze roam over you, from your tightly tied lips and glassy eyes, to the tremor in your hands at your side.
He doesn't wait another moment, taking only two long strides inside your apartment before encasing you into his arms and bringing you into his chest. Somewhere in between that he also manages to close the door behind too, and it's just the two of you now in your place.
You stay like that for a while, not entirely sure for how long, but just enough that his warmth is able to seep through the crevices of your body and nudge so gently at something in your chestđyour heart.
"It came back again, didn't it?" Seungcheol asks quietly, voice a low murmur against your ear.
There's a small sniffle, then a weak nod, and all he could do is hold you tighter just from that alone.
"Do you want to talk about it?" he continues softly. "Or... do you want me to just hold you?"
He feels the way your fingers dig into the fabric of his hoodie a bit more tightly. That's all he needs to know before he's pulling away and dragging you into your bedroom. He does it all like it's normal routine to do thisđto simply hold you in his arms because he knows sometimes words are not enough.
Seungcheol is holding you a bit more tighter than you notice, arms encircled around your body with your head resting against his chest. It's not a suffocating grip, but tight enough to convey the emptiness he felt from not having you in his arms for the entire day.
His fingers trace soft patterns on your back through the fabric of your shirt. Yet you feel as they dip a little lower, your shirt lifting a little higher, and then the feeling of his fingertips barely grazing your back makes you let out quiet, contented sigh.
Seungcheol hesitates for a moment, then whispers, "Can I touch you under here?"
You nod meekly, leaning more instinctively into his touch. His hand continues its tentative roam under your shirt, mapping over the skin of your back so delicately and lightly. It isn't the first time he's done this, however the intimacy of just being so close to himđto a man you call comfort, a man you call homeđmakes this feel a little more than just okay.
He feels the goosebumps that form from his touch and the way you tense up just slightly before relaxing. A small smile forms at his lips, and he presses a kiss to the top of your head.
Seungcheol thinks he can hold you like this forever.
Perhaps it's a bit of a stretch, or a glimpse into a future that seems uncertain, but it's far from a lie. It isn't just because you melt so perfectly into his arms, or knowing he's the only one in the world who gets to do this (which, admittedly, makes his heart swell with pride), it's more than that. It's the fact that you trust him enough to let him in. It's the way you lean into his touch, knowing that in his arms, you are safe, and he would do anything to protect you.
"You're strong, you know that?" he whispers softly. "Stronger than you give yourself credit for. That's what I admire so much about you. Even when it feels like the world is crashing down, you still find the strength to keep going. Opening your eyes in the morning makes you strong, or just... letting me hold you right now. That takes strength. You're so, so strong, baby."
You don't respond, but your breathing steadies against his chest, a sign that his words are sinking in, even if just a little. And that's okay. It's a process, one that he is more than willing to be patient for, one that he is more than willing to walk alongside you through.
"You're always my first priority," Seungcheol murmurs, voice barely above a whisper as he holds you close and his fingertips dance along your spine, sending shivers of warmth down your back. âYou can lean on međplease lean on me. When this happens I don't want you to shut me out, okay? Anything but that."
His words seem to crack the dam holding back your tears, heat prickling at the corner of your eyes as you bury your face more into his chest. A choked sob escapes your lips, the sound muffled by Seungcheol's shirt, and a momentary surge of shame courses through you.
"Let it out," he reassures gently. "It's okay. You're okay. I've got you."
And thatâs what you dođyou let go in his arms. Seungcheol hears the way you seem to quiet down after a few minutes, feeling the way you adjust in his hold to roll right next to him on the bed. Your bedroom is dark, with the only light coming from the dim lamp on your bedside table, but it's the first time all day he catches a close glimpse of your face.
His hand slowly leaves its spot from under your shirt and reaches over to cup your face lightly, affectionately, lovingly. His mouth forms into a small pout when he sees the way you're darting your eyes away from him.
"Hey, precious," Seungcheol says warmly, brushing his thumb across a stray tear rolling down your cheek. "Look at me, love."
There's a flicker of hesitation in your pupils. You know you look like an absolute mess right now: messy hair, with red-rimmed, puffy eyes, and tear stains marking your cheeks. But Seungcheol just smiles, a little sight of his dimple showing, and you can't help but weakly smile back. It stretches across your face, chasing away a bit of the tightness that had settled there.
"There we go, baby," he murmurs proudly. "That's the beautiful face I know and love. You're so pretty."
His tender gaze roams all over your face, from the vulnerability in your eyes and down to your slightly chapped lips that he's been aching to kiss all day, but that can wait for a little bit. For a moment, he feels something catch in his throat, and maybe his heart stutters a little too.
"You know," he starts, pressing his lips together in contemplation. "I... I think I can look at you forever."
He watches the way your eyes widen ever so slightly at his words, surprise flickering across your features. For a moment, he fears that he might have overstepped, swearing that he senses you crawl into your shell for just a second. But then he sees the way your expression softens, the corners of your lips curling up in a small, shy smile, and he knows he hasn't.
"Sorry, I-I didn't mean to say that right away, I just..." Seungcheol pauses, his cheeks flushing slightly as he searches for the right words. "I've been thinking about you a lot lately. I mean, I always do, but right now, I thinkđno, I really want to love you for... a very long time, and I want to do it properly because you deserve nothing less."
His words embrace you like a warm blanket, and you could simply only stare at him. This time, you let your own eyes wash over him. You trace the outline of his jaw, the small beauty marks dotting the familiar curve of his neck, the vulnerability in his eyes mirroring your own, before settling on his lips and swiftly back up to his warm, affectionate gaze.
Seungcheol feels his own breath hitch from that alone, and the next moment, he's kissing you so sweetly, lips moving against yours carefully and unhurried. Your eyes close right away, and you feel his warm hand drift back under your shirt to bring you back in his hold as if he's trying to rid of any space that was left.
I think, You don't let your gaze waver away from him when the kiss breaks and nothing but small smiles wears on both of your faces. I want to love you for a very long time too, Choi Seungcheol.

You and Lee Chan seem to have the same clubbing tendencies. That being: drinking a little too much at times and getting a little too touchy when doing so. (Or - you and Lee Chan have kissed a concerning amout of times before he finally asks for permisson.)

âCan I kiss you?â Chan asks you one March evening and you donât know why exactly you find yourself so surprised.Â
By default, itâs only natural for the boy to askâ the two of you arenât dating, not even close to that, youâd sayâ and while you wouldnât really mind if he kissed you without giving you a warning and swooped you off your feet on the stairs leading up to your dormitory building (for you found yourself a little too lightheaded and on the edge of your seat whenever heâs around lately, the fuzzy feeling in your stomach only further proving your assumptionsâ you have a silly, little crush on the male), you must admit that him asking for permission is quite nice. Surprising, but nice.Â
One might think youâre surprised because there was nothing that could lead you to this scenarioâ one might think you and Lee Chan were nothing but friends, not even close ones, per se (you just have a group of mutual friends that somehow always brought you two together when either one of you got excluded out of their conversations, ending up as each otherâs, although pleasant, last resort). One might even think the two of you are hanging out alone for the first time together, which isnât that far away from the truth in the first place, but still, is a blatant lie. Whatâs so surprising about the question to you, then?
The fact that this isnât the first time you and Lee Chan would be kissing, and the sheer fact leaves you wondering if heâs forgotten, or if he never really remembered in the first place.
You and Chan have kissedâŚ. an embarrassing amount of times for people that arenât dating, or anywhere close to the said establishment. The circumstances of said kisses differ from time to time, and while you thought that they were meaningless at first, you must admit that as time went by, you selfishly and almost a little pathetically looked forward to each and every time where a similar situation might occur and his lips would end up on yours again.
The first time you and Chan kissed was also the first time you two met. Itâs a strange sentence to use when describing a story about your first kiss with someone that youâre currently (hopefully) on a date with, but itâs the one you have to use, because itâs true.
The group you walked into the club with on the first day of orientation during your freshman year of college consisted of all your upperclassmen friendsâ the girls you had met in high school and didnât fail to keep in contact with: Lee Chaeryeong, Kim Minjeong and Huh Yunjin. You would trust these three girls with your whole entire life, and so when they had told you that they could show you around the campus and let you in on all the secrets you only learn with months of attending college, you felt like you just won the lottery.Â
After the cheerful senior Choi Soobin walked your humongous group through the campus and showed all of your classmates the fundamental parts of the college building (the gym, the labs and most importantly, the cafeteria), he invited you all to the open semester party in the club just a few minutes away from the campus. And yes, the party was originally supposed to be mainly for the freshmen, but as soon as you texted your friends to let them know about your whereabouts, they announced to you that there is no way you were going back to your dorm room so quicklyâ the whole campus was supposed to be on that party, and thatâs exactly why you were forced to stay.
âSo, how do you like it here so far?â Chaeryeong asks you as you start swinging your hips to the rhythm of the music, the DJ surprisingly not as bad as you expected him to be from the reviews you heard from the girls when standing in the queue leading towards the club.
âThe music isnât as bad as you said it will be,â you yell over the music into your friendâs ear, having her roll her eyes and shake her head at you in disbelief.
âI meant the campus, not the club, you silly goose,â she clarifies, making you gasp at the sentence.
âOh!â you laugh. âWell, Iâm less frightened, thatâs for sure.â
âThatâs gonna come back to you once the exam season starts,â Chaeryeong notes, snickering. The comment is slightly terrifyingâ therefore you choose to ignore it and stick it somewhere to the back of your brain to come back to when the time is right and your anxiety is no longer a far-away thing, but a very present and real issue.
âAh! I see Mingyu there!â she suddenly screams, pointing somewhere behind you. âIâm gonna go talk to him, can you try finding our table and going back to Minjeong and Yunjin?â
âIâll be fine,â you nodded, trying to believe the sentence just as much as you were trying to convince your friend of it. The place was filled with people, and although you didnât feel particularly in danger, you were getting a little scared of getting walked over to death in the wave of the drunk upperclassmen enjoying themselves in the club.
Feet dragging you through the crowd painfully slowly, you try hard to find your table on the sides of the club. Your eyes never really had a 20/20 vision, but the neon lighting of the club and the glass of Martini youâd had before stepping to the dance floor with Chaeryeong really didnât help you in seeing things clearly. No matter how hard you try, you canât find your two other friends anywhere, and if you are being completely honest, youâre almost certain the table you previously sat at with your group was now occupied with someone completely elseâ meaning that your dear friends either left to the dancefloor, or left the club completely (which you doubted, but the possibilities were never really 0).
And so with that, you drag yourself towards the bar. You think that was a better option to choose in this situationâ since you thought that going out for some fresh air is just going to get you kidnapped if you went there aloneâ and you also figured that youâd be easier to find by your lost friends if you were somewhere out in the open instead of in the corners of the humid room. Ordering yourself another Martini to pass the time, you drink the beverage in slow sips before you feel the presence of someone on the bar stool next to you.
You look up at the stranger beside you, noticing a boy around your age sending you a shy, yet charming look. âDo you mind if I sit here?â he asks.
âNot really,â you answer, watching as the boy nods, his shoulders relaxing as he orders himself a drink.Â
âAre you here alone?â he asks as he looks back at you again, face tugging into a panicked expression when he realizes the implication his words may hold. âIâm not asking in a creepy way, or anything, itâs just- Iâm a freshman and I lost the people I came here with, so Iâm kind of alone here as wellâŚâ he quickly explains, eyes big and honest, âyou just looked like you could use some company,â he explains, making an endeared smile flash over your features.
Shaking your head at his tangent, you wave him off with your hand. âDonât worry, I got it,â you laugh, âand the same as you, actually. I came here with my friends, but they disappeared somewhere, so I just sat here and figured theyâll find me eventually.â
âGreat minds think alike,â the boy laughs, holding up his glass before taking another sip, âwell, until that happens, I guess we can hang out, canât we? My nameâs Chan.â
âY/N,â you introduce yourself, âitâs nice meeting you, Chan.â
The two of you talk about everything and anything: where he comes from, where you come from, which dorm building youâre staying at, which dorm building heâs staying at, your major (literature) and his major (dance), your friends and his friendsâ and with the increasing amount of information you get out of him, the pull of gravity sends you more and more towards the boy. Chan is charming, talkative and fun. You find yourself attracted to him each time he cracks a joke or teases you about your choice of your favorite movie (âThis is the first time Iâve heard anyone say The gods must be crazy is their favorite movie!â), and thatâs exactly why you donât find it in you to say no when he asks if he could buy you a drink.
One drink turns into twoâ three, four, eventually even fiveâ and you progressively start to forget all about your lost friends as you ask Chan to show you what being a dance major is all about and invite him to the dancefloor, swinging your hips back and forth to the rhythm.
You donât know if they teach this type of choreography in dance school, but as the songs change from more upbeat to less energetic and more sensual, you find yourself a little too enchanted with the way Chanâs features soften under the neon pinks and purples, your arms instinctively wrapping around his neck and stepping closer to him. His arm ends up on your lower backâ dangerously close to your bottom, which you arenât that opposed to anywayâ and when his nose brushes against the shell of your ear in the middle of one of the songs to talk to you, you canât help but press yourself against him closer.Â
âYouâre kind of good at this, for a literature major,â he hums, his voice making shivers run down your spine.
And sure, it couldâve been just the alcohol levels in your blood that made you so dangerously close to him, but as you study his featuresâ although a little hazily, but still fully taking in the sharp angles of his jaw and the sparkles in his eyesâ you donât have it in you to pull away when the boy leans in and kisses you, lips enchanting you the same way his moves have.
His kiss is heated and sensual, the one that makes your knees buckle and your mind go on overdrive, creating all sorts of fantasies in your delirious brain, and you must admit you donât mind it when his hands slip further down to grope your butt, the two of you still lazily moving to the rhythm of the song in the background. The sound is coming in a little muffled to your ears as you let yourself fully indulge in the momentâ itâs not every day you make out with an extremely attractive guy in the clubâ before your oxygen runs out and you have to pull away from him, instead studying Chanâs swollen lips from up close. They are inviting you for more, especially as his eyes open and look at you all blown-out and hazy, but you figure that he can wait. You have to catch your breath first and get yourself togetherâ if you don't want to come completely undone in the middle of the crowded dance floor, that is.
You could honestly stare into his face forever, if you wanted toâ except, you donât have the chance as a loud voice from behind you calls: âY/N! There you are!â
Annoyed thoughts fill your brain the very second you hear Minjeong from behind your backâ where were they for the last hour? Of course they had to find you when the night was finally getting goodâ but you turn towards her nonetheless, showing her an innocent smile. You notice the girl is accompanied by the rest of your girl clover, alongside a tall guy that shows your companion a mischievous grin. âSo I see you and Chan have already met and we donât have to introduce you to each other anymore,â he says.
The sentence has you nervously clear your throat and take a step away from Chan. The boy ironically heaves out a: âMingyu! How nice to see you again, after an hour.â
âDonât pretend you werenât having fun.â
Feeling the atmosphere grow awkward, you quickly look at your friends, smiling tightly to try and save the situation (while also acting as if you didnât just finish making out with their friendâs friend). âWhere did you all go anyway?â
âOh, we met Seungkwan and Vernon, so we decided to sit together, and then Chae came with Mingyu after some time, and thatâs when we realized we were each missing a person⌠so here we are,â Minjeong clarifies, having you nod.
In conclusion, this is the story of how you met Lee Chan. What was supposed to be a one-night thing at a club for you, never really expecting to see the boy ever again (except from accidental meetings on the campus that could very well be played off as neither of you remembering), turned into a whole another situation as the two of you now shared a surprisingly tightly-knit friend group.
You never spoke about the kiss again. Or much at all, really.
Kind of disappointed with the fact, but still kind of okay with the situation, you found yourself falling into rhythm with the newly found world at university. Youâd gotten used to the all-nighters, the weird partying in the middle of the week on a school night, to the hookup culture youâve never really found yourself fitting in with, and with the life that comes to you when living in a dormitory. All of these somehow had the presence of Lee Chan included, though, as you learned on another Wednesday night (those are the designated bar runs when youâre friends with Chwe Vernon and Boo Seungkwanâ since their Thursdays are free and they can get as drunk as they want without fearing being hungover in class), much to your surprise, you and the charismatic boy have the same clubbing tendencies.
That being: drinking a little too much at times and getting a little too touchy when doing so.
It doesnât help that the both of you were light-weightsâ or at least thatâs what youâve been told.Â
You two donât talk to each other much before getting a few drinks in, since youâre a little shy when it comes to the charming, but endearing boy. What his reasoning for the seeming lack of interest in you when sober is, youâre not really sureâ but as the night usually goes, you bet with Vernon on who can drink more tequila shots before their gag reflex hits, and sooner or later, you find yourself drunk at the bar.Â
Once your otherwise stoic friend feels that itâs too much for him to handle and trails to the toilets (accompanied by a sulking Sungkwan complaining that âHe always does this, ruining the night for everyone!â), you allow yourself to get back to the dance floor. Sounds like a good idea in theory, but is a bad idea in practiceâ somewhere along the way, you start to feel too dizzy in the heat of the crowd, the lightheadedness making you feel sick. Your figure is quickly dragged outside by a person you didnât notice has been keeping their eyes on you, and only when you finally slip to the floor and sit on the pavement in front of the crowded bar, you recognise the guardian angel staring down at you with hazy eyes
âYou looked like you were going to faint over there,â Chan hums, a perky expression playing with his face. Thereâs a boyish grin spread over his lips as he stares at your disheveled composure, the two of you coming into a weird sense of dĂŠja vu youâre convinced only a few shots of tequila can bring you into on a Wednesday night.
âOh, I was going to,â you nod, watching as the boy settles next to you on the ground. The place around you is buzzing in true college fashionâ people smoking, drinking off-the-counter alcohol straight from the bottle they got at the corner shop down the street because itâs cheaper than the shots in the club, people meeting and talking about their majors and where theyâre from, making new connections.
âThank god I was there to rescue you, then,â Chan chuckles, shoving you with his elbow.
âYeah, my guardian angel,â you hum dreamily, giggling at the ridiculousness of your comment.Â
âSaw Vernon running off with Seungkwan tailing him,â he nods, ânow thatâs not a guardian angel.â
âThatâs a guardian devil for sure,â you hum, pursing your lips. âWouldnât want to have Seungkwan as my caretaker. He complains too much.â
âThey argue like a married couple,â Chan snickers.Â
âItâs the curse of being roommates. After a certain amount of time, you start to view each other like youâre married,â you hum, nodding to yourself.
âDo you consider Minjeong to be your wife?â
âNo,â you sigh, shrugging, âsheâs too immature to be my wife. I think of her more like my child, actually.â
âWell, looking at you right now, you donât seem to be the more mature one out of the duo,â he pokes a finger to your side, making you jolt away at the contact. Furrowing your brows at him, clearly a little offended, you huff at him.
âThe roles change when I drink. Thatâs how marriage works,â you say, closing your eyes and pressing your lips together, nodding, fully pleased with yourself.
Chan laughs at you. âI thought you said she was more like your child?â
âThen stop thinking, Chan.â
âYou were the one who said it!â he points out, shaking his head in disbelief. Youâre not sure to what extent you can blame this on the effect of alcoholâ what can you say. Sometimes you get too tied up in your own lies.
âOh,â you snicker, âright.â
âDummy,â he teases, flicking the side of your thigh, making your blood boil with frustration.
âWho are you calling dummy?â you argue, having a perfect comeback to snap back at the boy. âWerenât you the one coming to the wrong class for 2 weeks?â
Chanâs whole composure crumbles, a serious look tinted with hints of shame overtaking his previously grinning face. âWho told you that?â
âNot relevant,â you shrug. You find that itâs the best to keep the identity of the mole confidential. (It was Mingyu.)
âWas it Seungkwan?â
âNo.â
âSo it was.â
Sometimes you wonder just how clueless Lee Chan really is. Although you donât think heâs slow, you must admit that he does have his moments that keep you wondering just how he can operate in the world without being used or manipulated on a daily basis. Is anyone keeping an eye on him? What if he accidentally joins a cult one day?
âWell, whoever told me wasnât the one going to a completely different class for 2 weeks straight, soââ
âLook, itâs not my fault they make the schedule so difficult to read! The classes were overlapping on the thing, and I didnât know which one applied to me, so I just assumed I could choose,â this has you laughing out loud at the boy, âand so I just chose one. I didnât know those were electives. I didnât even sign up for any electives! Can you believe that? We are supposed to have electives?âÂ
He looks so endearing as he speaks, laughing to himself and gesturing with his arms. Thereâs a sense of fondness pooling in your stomach as you reach over and plant a soft, quick peck to his lips. The male seems to be caught off-guard as he stops in his tracks, not a single word coming out of his lips after your actionâ and truth be told, although youâre kind of glad for the silence, the thought of scaring him away makes you a little anxious. When you look at him from the side, though, the boy is grinning.
Scattering to your feet, you wobbly waddle back into the humid building. You donât think either of you could continue on with the conversation after your actions, and so you figure the best way to go around this is to leave. âWell, Iâll see you on the dance floor, Channie.â
The third time you manage to lock your lips with his is no different. Itâs January now, though, and Seungkwan decided to host his birthday in one of the houses you can rent on the beach. It isn't as fun as it would've been in summer and you could go for a swim, but letâs be realisticâ you'd never say no to a good birthday celebration.Â
Thereâs havoc erupting all around you as your friend group sings the birthday song to Seungkwan. You all had something to drink prior to the cake ceremony, since some of you came sooner than the others and you figured that you have to wait for everyone with the cake, and so the singing now resembles a mating call of five dolphins more than the casual, harmonic birthday song.Â
Seungkwan is sitting at the table, the rest of you gathered around himâ some with glasses in their hands, some recording the commotion with their phonesâ and when the song is over and the birthday boy made his wish, he blows out the candles on the cake. Clapping resonates through the little kitchen, everyone ready for the cake, when Chan pushes the older oneâs face straight into the icing.
It only takes Seungkwan half a second before he starts chasing the little devil around the beach house. The younger one is laughing at his own anticsâ which you must admit, although a little childish, you find to be quite endearingâ and the older one curses at him with the most colorful vocabulary youâve ever heard him say out loud. Not even Lee Chanâs own mother has ever scolded him in a way Boo Seungkwan is able to.
âDo you think Seungkwan would mind if I start cutting the cake without him?â Minjeong asks as she gets out a large knifeâ she looks a little threatening, you must sayâ which has you shrugging.
âI think heâs preoccupied right now,â you say.
âYeah, but Iâve waited for this cake for over two hours,â she grunts, âso if he doesnât want to cut it, Iâll do it for him,â she shrugs to herself and proceeds with her intentions.
Minjeong cuts straight through the face imprint of Boo Seungkwan in his own cake, slicing the red velvet into equal parts to put on the paper plates Vernon found somewhere in the back cupboards of the kitchen. âDo you want some?â
âIn a minute,â you laugh, shaking your head at your roommate, âIâll go get them before they kill each other. I think the cake is enough to make truce fall over this war.â
âStay safe out there,â Chaeryeong hums, nodding as she takes a paper plate and puts a chunky slice of the cake on, taking a fork into her hand and tasting the icing. âItâs surprisingly good even with Seungkwanâs skin cells in it.â
Minjeong slaps the other girlâs back, gritting her teeth. âOf course itâs good! I baked that shit for 2 hours and Y/N wouldnât help, because she didnât want to ruin itââ
(You just didnât feel like baking. You donât want to have another fight with your roommate about it, though, and thatâs another excuse to leave the kitchen and go find Chan with his murderer.)Â
Peering your eyes around the whole beach house, you fail to find Seungkwan anywhere. Assuming you two accidentally missed each other and heâs back reunited with his cake, your legs automatically lead you on the patio, where you find Chan resting against the railway. He is wearing a leather jacket, his hair now a little longer than when you first met him in September, and when the noise of the back door opening lands into his ears, he makes a turn and watches you cross the space between you, all while eyeing your naked legs.Â
You contemplated if wearing a mini skirt in the middle of January was a good idea, but the satisfaction running through your veins at his hungry, yet collected eyes make it all worth it.
âArenât you cold?â he asks. You shake your head in answer, but he pays it no attention as he takes off his jacket and puts it around your shoulders, the smell of his cologne filling your nose like a blissful drug. Youâve always liked attention, but when it comes to Lee Chan, you are twice as satisfied when he pays you just a mere glance.
âNot anymore,â you hum, smiling to yourself. âSeungkwan gave up on murdering you?â
âI think it was more of a health concern for him. He was breathing so heavily after a few minutes of running that I thought he was going to suffocate,â Chan snickers, making you laugh.
âIâd sleep with one eye open tonight anyway,â you peep, âjust in case.â
âOh, definitely,â he nods, grinning. âI wonât even take any drinks from him in case he poisons them. Better be safe than sorry.â
He takes out a pack of cigarettes from his back pocket, lights up one for himself and offers you one as well. Even though you always promise yourself youâre quitting and that smoking is a bad habit you should overcome, you eagerly nod and watch him with half-lidded eyes as he lights it for you, one hand close to your face shielding the lighter from the chilly breeze, just like every time. You haven't had that much to drink yet, but the effect of nicotine always makes your head spin when the smoke fills your lungs. Truth be said, though, you are afraid that the proximity of your friend doesnât help much with the weakness of your knees either.
âCome inside, youâre gonna catch a cold,â he mumbles when the both of you are done smoking, hands gripping the sides of his open jacket on your body, tugging you towards him just the slightest amount.Â
Like another bad habit the both of you have to break, he seems to pause for a second, as if questioning himself one more time before he goes for it and places a short peck to your lips, leading you to the beach house again, now flushed and internally squealing.
The fourth time, it happens on his own birthday party.Â
Itâs too late in the semester for any of you to experience a big party, the exam season being just around the corner. You still managed to gather and celebrate nonethelessâ the boys letting you into their dorm building, your little friend group fitting inside of the communal kitchen on the end of the hall. People passing by look at you with half concerned, half annoyed faces at the commotionâ which is understandable, nobody wants ruckus just down the hall when theyâre supposed to be working on the last-minute assignmentsâ but you donât mind it much, telling yourself itâs not your problem in the first place and youâre allowed to have a bit of fun once in a while, as long as youâre not the one being wronged in the moment.Â
A bottle of champagne is taken out of the fridge by the hands of the birthday boy, the commotion around you happily cheering and clapping (only Chaeryeong hides away from the pointed tip of the bottle, knowing all too well that Chan is not to be trusted with things that can explode), and while Mingyu encourages the boy to pop the champagne open out of the window, you all realize that the action is indeed, not possible.
âDonât tell me you got the one with the lid that screws on!â Seungkwan turns around to scream into Vernonâs face, having the poor man shrug to himself.
âYou canât really tell in the store when the seal is onââ
âThen you shouldâve double checkedââ the nagging would go on further if it wasnât for the last bits of common sense from the birthday boy himself (that Seungkwan would protect with everything in him, making sure their youngest has the best birthday ever, but would never admit to it outloud), as he just unscrews the lid and flicks it out of the opened window instead, earning himself a couple of cheers and claps from the rest of the group.Â
The bottle gets passed around the circle, each of you chugging the sparkly alcohol straight from itâ because pouring the drinks would take too much effort, and also, there weren't even enough glasses for everyone to pour the beverage into anyway.
The tallest one out of the gathering takes a cake out of the overstuffed fridge, lighting a singular candle in the middle and holding it up in front of the birthday boyâs face. There are sparkles in Chanâs eyes despite the poor condition of the cakeâ itâs one of those you get discounted in the dollar store, one of those that donât even have candles on them and you have to get them yourself (which is exactly why Chanâs cake only has a singular, yellow candle in the middle)â and you find yourself admiring the sheer joy and appreciation in his orbs with fondness in your heart.Â
âHappy birthday to you, happy birthday to youââ
âHappy birthday, dear Channie!â Seungkwanâs vocal abilities shine through in the heartfelt song, the dramaticness of your whole group never denying itself as all of them make sure to sing to Chan with as much theatrical over-exaggeration as they can. Chan watches the flame with an inkling in his eye you canât quite place. He looks adorable, you think.
You watch from behind as he blows out the candle. Something inside of you beams at the sight of your friend growing olderâ the fact that youâre here, celebrating with him moving something in you. You donât often like it when people get older, but you think birthday celebrations make the sentiment worth it. In a moment of particular fondness, you hug the boy from the backâ where youâve been standing, considering the crammed nature of the kitchenâ and whisper a giddy âHappy birthday!â into his ear.Â
The male turns his head to you, a grin settling on his lips as he scans your face from up close. He looks at you with a look that you canât really read, but makes you all warm from the inside. Itâs different to the way he usually looks at you, and you only decipher it when he quickly leans towards your face and presses a peck to your lips. Only then it starts to all make sense.
He does it in front of everybody, the rest of your friends whistling at the action. Your heart leaps a little as you wrestle Chan off with a laugh, trying hard to keep the unseriousness of it all. If you can keep lying to your friends about the way you feel towards the male, maybe youâll even manage to convince yourself.Â
The cake is taken away from his grasp and placed onto the table, ready to be served. You keep a calculated distance away from him, but that still doesnât keep you from watching the boy from afar. Thereâs a certain haziness in his eyes when you stare at him from across the room and an aftertaste of vodka on your tongue when you lick it off your lips.
The fifth time, it happens when you gather to celebrate passing your exams.Â
College kids have only one way of celebrating the joys of life (as well as only one way of dealing with sorrows), and that isâ you guessed itâ alcohol. The whole friend group gathered in the common kitchen of the boyâs dormitories again, soju bottles ringing against each other as you cheered and drowned in the taste of the liquor. Youâd be lying if you said you werenât watching Chan the whole time, the endearing twinkles in his eyes making you foolishly drink more and more, a weird desire in you just begging to be drowned out, since you couldnât do anything about it.
Once the night was over and the bottles were all emptied, the boys decided to walk you back to your dorm building.
âGyu, itâs literally a 10 minute walk across the campus. What could possibly happen on the way there?â Minjeong laughed, but the commotion followed you outside nonetheless.
âItâs dark outside!â Mingyu insisted. âYou never know what could happen. I donât want the responsibility of your dead bodies on my hands.â
âChaeryeong is feral enough to fight off any creeps alone, you donât have to worry about us,â Minjeong joked, but the boys followed you outside nonetheless, grabbing their coats and escaping the warmth of their dorms.
You find yourself trailing behind the group, the essence of soju lulling you to a peaceful slumber that you perform despite still being on the go, your brain coated with the incoherent buzz. Lee Chan finds his stance next to you, cautiously watching over your step as you shuffle across the sidewalk, a gentle voice coaxing you awake.
âGot any plans for the winter break?â he asks.
âProbably just going to stay home with my parents for a bit,â you muse, shrugging. âHave lots of naps⌠I need to recharge. This semester was too hectic.â
âOh, you donât have to tell me that,â Chan admits, chuckling at your shared despair.Â
Kicking the pebbles under your feet, you watch as the male indulges in a little game of football with you, passing the chosen rock back to you each time you kick it too far. The air is crisp and you sniffle a little from the cold every once in a while, but every time you catch the playful twinkle in Chanâs eyes when the pebble hits the side of your shoe again, you feel a bit of warmth engulfing you from the inside.
âI think this whole thing would be far less enjoyable if it wasnât for you guys,â Chan admits, licking his lips. Heâs rightâ itâs always better to have someone to rely on in university. You canât imagine going to school and not having a familiar face to fall back to any time you feel lonely. Itâs easier when you know all the insider tips from your older upperclassmen friendsâ when you have a default friend group you fit into without actually attempting to make any new friends yourself. Suddenly, youâre awfully thankful for everyone.
âYeah. Although they did turn me into an alcoholic, it seems,â you chuckle, earning yourself an amused giggle coming from Chan.
âOh, for sure,â he nods, scratching the back of his neck. âWe have to tune it down next semester. Wouldnât wanna end up in AA instead of graduating.â
âNow, thatâs a long way from here,â you say, shaking your head in amusement.
âYou never know before itâs too late, to be fair.â
You donât realize it back then, but Chan is always somehow there when you take it too far, taking note of your drunken needs and providing you safety from creeps in the club. Lee Chan holds your hair back when you throw up, your stomach too weak on certain nights. He is there when you want to dance and also when you want to cool down. Heâs your drinking buddy, sure, but the reality is greater than thatâ he always wants you to have fun and be as comfortable as you can be. If he can do anything to ensure that, heâs going to do it.
That applies to your sober adventures as well, although heâs more reserved when he has nothing to blame for his obviously smitten actions. Cranking his neck to look at you better, Chan decides to get rid of anything to blame next time.Â
Maybe he has to try harder.
Just tonight, for the last time, Chan kisses you with an excuse of alcohol to fall back on in front of your dorm building when nobody is watching, paying his goodbyes to you. He kisses you almost tenderly, making your knees buckle and the lightness in your stomach cry out with full measures.
âIâll miss you, Y/L/N.â
You don't see Chan for a while after. You spend the rest of the winter break you have after completing your exams at home, relaxing with your parents. They are right when they say that the holidays should be spent with your familyâ no matter how much you love the friends you made in university.
Coming back to school after the few weeks of break brought a sudden change to your and Chanâs dynamic, though. While you must admit that youâve grown strangely closer over the months, talking more even sober and naturally gravitating towards each other when sitting in booths at McDonaldâs or falling into casual conversation at the back of the group when walking to places with everyone, you find that Chan puts more effort into being friends with you now.
He texts you randomly through-out the day, asking you how you are and what youâre up to. He sends you pictures of Seungkwan when heâs sleeping in the lectures, and you even find yourself laughing at the Instagram reels he randomly shoots your way in the middle of the night sometimes. He doesnât drink much even when all of you end up going to the nearby bar again on a Tuesday evening, and you find yourself following his pattern, knowing that even if you gave in to the alcohol, the tipsy state wouldnât be as fun if you didnât have anyone to share the same energy with.Â
Because while you do enjoy drinking, the truth is, itâs not as fun without your drinking buddy. Half the fun of drinking is having fun with the people you share the moment with, and, well, it wouldnât feel right to drink with the others being sober. You owe your friends that much.
Lee Chan puts effort into being friends with you more, and you donât know if you like it.Â
Because even though before, you werenât as close as you might be now, the adrenaline of what could be and what even is between the two of you any time youâre under the influence was exciting you, keeping you on your toes, making you feel desired and liked. Now, heâs relaxedâ no more than an arm around your shoulder when his hand gets tired in the booth of the bar. The casualty of it all gets you worried.
So when the time comes and the two of you finally hang out one on one today, getting boba and then finding comfort in the April sunlight provided by the park across from your dorms, you find yourself questioning the nature of this hangout. And you think youâre not wrong for that, of courseâ everyone with working two eyes must admit that Lee Chan has been sending you mixed signals so far.
Hearing the question âCan I kiss you?â from his mouth, his cheeks dusted pink and eyes big in anticipation, was even more surprising to your ears, and you might understand it better nowâ the history you have with the boy suggests that thereâs no need in asking, but also, the intentions are more than unclear at the moment. Heâs not drunkâ not even tipsyâ why is this happening, then?
âI mean, we donât have to, of course, Iâ I justââ he stutters, eyes aimlessly breaking eye contact with yours to stare anywhere but at your lips right now, nerves clearly written all over his face and in the stance heâs taking, a few steps below you on the stairway to the dormitory. Snickering at his hesitance, you sigh to yourself.
âThis is the first time you asked,â you mumble a little jokingly, and when the boyâs eyes finally meet yours again, he seems a little embarrassed from the way his ears are burning red and he chews on the inside of his cheek.Â
The tone of his voice is kind of defeated, a little shy, even, when he speaks up again. âWell, yeah,â he shrugs, âso I finally wanted to do it right. And sober, no matter how fucking wrong and weird that sounds.â
Breaking into a soft laughter at his commentâ because truthfully, to a strangerâs ear, that might sound a little alarmingâ you roll your eyes at the boy and lean down to be at his level, palms of your hands meeting with his cheeks as he watches you with curious eyes, the sparkle in them filling you to the brim with endearance. Your lips meet with his in a gentle, soft, yet yearning-filled kiss, having your eyes fluttering close and the pads of your thumbs softly stroking over the skin of his cheekbones.Â
The kiss is no different to the ones youâve shared beforeâ well, except thereâs no loud music in the background, no smell of trash cans behind the bar or the smoke of an earlier-smoked cigarette in the air, and most importantly, no taste of alcohol on either of your lipsâ but still, it feels a little different. Sure, it has your knees week and your stomach feeling fuzzy, it does make you feel like youâre drunker than you were, which now, sober, you realize it just the effect Lee Chan has on you alone, but thereâs a little more care, thought and intention to the kiss now, and it hits you with full force when you pull away from him and feel his hands glazing the skin of your waist in a hesitant hug.
âSo that means this was a date then, right?â you ask.
âWell, you didnât really seem to care about that all the times we've kissed beforeââ he jokes, earning himself a swat to his shoulder.
Now heâs bold.
âOkay, sure, if it helps you sleep at night. Iâll even take you out on another one, if you want.â
Turns out that alcohol was the variable in your relationship that only brought you two courageâ the desire to kiss his lips off has always been there, you just never acted on it sober. And while youâre not so sure youâre gonna tell the story of how you two met in detail to your kids one day, youâre glad for the kick the rum and coke gave you on the day of your orientation, because who knows. Maybe you wouldnât be here without the weird coincidence.

âIâve got an iced dirty chai with oat milk at the end of the bar!â
A sour-faced woman scoffs, âThat isnât what I ordered.â
âWell, is your name Samantha?âÂ
âNo.â
âThen it isnât your order.âÂ
The exchange between Seungkwan and the woman rings familiar. Sundays bring out the best in everyone it seems. But you're too busy handling the never ending line of drink tickets to scold him for poor customer service. Focusing on the machine, you pull shot after shot; inadvertently covering yourself in errant splashes of milk and coffee. The rush of the morning is still going strong but you hone into the rhythm and let your mind fall away from anything beyond the cups resting atop the counter next to you.
But as always, the steam from the milk frother continues to heat the space above; right where the over sensitive fire alarm was installed.
The shrill blaring freezes everyone in place. A few children scream in shock, making the vein on your temple throb. Your ears ring with each pulse as your head falls into your hands.
Every single morning since you opened Fika two months ago the alarm went off without fail.
And then he would show up like clockwork.
The bell attached to the wooden door chimes as Soonyoung breaks through the threshold of the cafe. Grimaced faces greet him. The shrill fire alarm with flash lights blares into the industrial space, bouncing off the walls to echo inanely.Â
âEarlier than usual.â Soonyoung chirps as he saunters past the line, easily rounding the bar to access the screeching piece of junk inconveniently placed above the espresso machine.
You step out of the way, face flat and mouth tense. âBusy day.â You explain.
The alarm cuts off as swift as it started, Soonyoung stepping back to smile down at you.
âI can hang around in case. Seems like that line isnât going anywhere.â
âYeah, sure. Do you want something to drink?â You offer stepping back to the line of cups littering the metal counter.
âOoo, buying me drinks already? Arenât you presumptuous?â
The wiggle of his eyebrows is meant to be suggestive but they only make him look like he ate a mouthful of sour candy.
âNevermind.â You huff, stepping around the man as you grab the next cup in line and start working. âGo save a cat in a tree or something.â
Sensing your waning mood, Soonyoung cuts the act. âIâll just have my regular.â
âYou know where the cups are.â
A full cup of brewed coffee joins him on the opposite side of the counter. Soonyoung plants himself in his usual chair, chin resting on his curled fist as he watches you work your magic.
On slow days heâll chat your ear off until the fire station calls him back. But on days like today, heâs content to in silence; obsessed with the sureness of your hands, the strong pout of your lips, and the way everything seems pulled into your gravity.
Maybe he has a crush on you.
Scratch that; Soonyoung definitely has a crush on you.
And everyone knows. His supervisor, Jihoon, knows. Itâs why Soonyoung is always the one to come and fix the faulty alarm in the shop. His best friend, Seokmin, knows. Itâs why Seokmin and his fiancee constantly batter him with texts about when heâll ask you on a date. If someone went to space and looked down they could see how much he likes you without even trying.
You hit a lull and Soonyoung takes his chance. âGot any special plans this week?â
âWeâre doing themed baked goods on Wednesday.â You call over your shoulder.
Itâs not what Soonyoung was asking about but he takes it in stride.
Your employees also know about the firemanâs feelings. Itâs why Seungkwan throws a pitying look his way along with a deformed muffin. Subtle rejection tastes like blueberries and brown sugar.
âWill you save me one?â Soonyoung asks.
âIs free coffee not enough?â
âWho said I wouldnât pay for it?â
You never let Soonyoung pay for anything at the cafe. Despite how much he enjoys free food, it always makes him feel a bit guilty. Itâs why you think he only drinks black coffee with a lethal amount of sugar when in reality heâd take some fancy espresso drink any day.Â
You laugh as you continue to work through the next batch of orders. âWeâll see if there are any left.â
âIâm a civil servant!â
âServe in silence please!â Seungkwan barks, earning a few chuckles from the other customers sitting at the bar.
The back and forth continues and eventually the line dwindles to nothing as the morning lulls on. Soonyoung downs two more cups and manages to haggle Seungkwan for an overly toasted slice of banana bread with a singed corner he planned to throw out anyway.
The entire time Soonyoung watches you. Even covered in splashes of milk and coffee stains, heâs still enamored with you as you lean over the bar and jot notes in the ever expanding list of repairs and updates the shop needs.
And just when Soonyoung opens his mouth to say something, anything, the shrill beep of his phone cuts him off.
âDamn, I gotta head back.â He curses. âJust call if you need me again, okay?â
âWill do.âÂ
You donât even look up as he walks towards the door.
âSatan is one the phone for you.â
âPlease be less specific.â You beg Seungkwan, grabbing the receiver still on hold.
âBakery lady.â
Steeling yourself, you unmute the phone and bring it to your ear.
âHello?â
âY/N?â
âYes.â
âI was reviewing orders for Valentineâs. You're only doing the usual? I thought we talked about special items. I already bought the ingredients so if you changed your mind itâs putting me out of money.â
âNo, we need at least two dozen of the cupcakes and two dozen of the cookies on top of our usual order.â
âThatâs not what the order form says!â The old crone hawks through the line.
You ask her for a moment while pulling out your laptop and settling into a seat far away from the clusters of customers still strung throughout the cafe.
Wiping your face, you stare at the illuminated screen of your computer with the order form pulled up. âI have the form on my screen right now and it clearly saysââ
âI donât care what youâre looking at, itâs not what I have on my end!â
âAre you sure youâre looking at the form for Fika on Second street?â
âIâm telling you Iâmâoh.â
The deflation in her tone pulls a smirk across your lips. âHm?â
âAlright so two dozen red velvet cupcakes and two dozen heart sugar cookies?â
âYep.â
âAlright, Iâll have it on Wednesday.â
âThanks.â
Click.
The table shakes with the impact of your forehead. The clatter of your mug draws attention from the few customers around but none pay much attention.
âEverything okay?â A voice asks from above.
âGreat. Wonderful.â You say into the wood.
âGood. Because the espresso machine is brokenâŚagain.â
You rise from your seat, face indecipherable as you walk past the counter, through the back storage area and into the alley behind the building.Â
Several seconds pass before you release a guttural scream. It's gritty, ripping apart your throat as all bubbling exhaustion breaches your lips. The noise echos between the brick walls before escaping to the sky above. Several pigeons flee to the rooftops for safety while mice and other vermin scuffle along the walls in terror.
Seungkwan watches from the door, eyes wide as you continue to belt for the trash bags and city rats witnessing your meltdown.Â
Your voice fizzles as you run out of air. Closing your eyes, you take two deep breaths. Inhaling the scent of stale storm water and whatever else perfumes the back alley until the stretch of your lungs burns from the inside out.
And then you turn and walk back inside as if the entire thing never happened.

The block is only illuminated by streetlights at this hour. Not even the earliest of early birds litter the narrow sidewalk as you push into the empty cafe and begin prepping for the Monday morning rush. The smell of fresh coffee fills the air, the whir of the grinder harmonizing with the jazz playlist curling down from the speakers.Â
The calm before the storm.
Slowly the first shift employees trickle in just before opening; relieving you to commandeer the office slash storage room in the back, intent on knocking out the mountain of paperwork and following up with the repair man about the alarm he said he would be back to fix last week. But first, the phone blinking with unread messages.
âThis is Megan. Weâve been trying to reach you about your carâs extended warrââ
Message deleted.
The next message is a young man reporting his credit card missing and visiting your shop. You call and let his voicemail know no one has seen anything but you hope he figures it out.
âHi Y/N. This is Cheryl with Harmony Bakers. Just wanted to let you know I wonât be able to get that special order for Valentineâs Day. Or your regular order for tomorrow. Weâve decided to close up shop. Sorry about the inconvenience.â
The words donât hit at first. But your brain slowly catches up to what Cheryl is saying. Canceling. Sheâs canceling two days before Valentineâs.
Your attempts to return her call fall flat. Six tries and all ring once before dropping into an automated message reporting her voicemail is full, no doubt from the other shops sheâs also shafted with the impulsive decision.Â
No holiday treats. No regular food items. No back up. No plan B.Â
Failure, failure, failuâ
The pad of paper littered with notes sails into the not so far wall only to slap against the plaster and slip to the ground.Â
You can only focus on one problem at a time. Or at least the problem whose solution wonât send you to jail. And that means heading to the front where the day is starting to pick up.
The boys have things under control but the line is lengthening and youâre a great way to relieve the pressure. Immediately an invisible song pulls you into the rhythm of their work; drinks and food hit the end of the bar almost as fast as the orders came in.
Soonyoung comes in and waits at the counter as usual. The alarm seems to be granting mercy given the horrible state of affairs from this morning.
The customers not so much.
âGod, how stupid are you that you messed up a simple order? Itâs a fucking americano and you made it taste like ass.âÂ
The man standing at the end of the bar, hands flat on the counter in an attempt to physically dominate the space, always complains. His iced drinks are too cold, his hot drinks are too hot, the weather is bad, taxes are too high, the list continues on and on. And somehow it's always your fault.Â
Usually its little barbs under his breath but today heâs out for blood and youâve already had enough.
Your teeth grit together so hard it feels like the forced smile plastered on your face might crack them into dusk. âLike I said, I can remake it for you if youâd likââÂ
âWhy would I want you to remake it? You clearly have no idea what youâre doing. Get someone else.â
âI got it.â Seungcheol steps forward.Â
The older man gives him an apprehensive look. Seungcheol is harmless but he knows how to be scary when he wants to be.
âIâm gonna goâŚrestock somethingâŚâ you warble, all but sprinting to the back.
Plastic sleeves of cups and boxes of straws bear witness to your breakdown. The six am tantrum clouds in and your carefully built dam of control explodes. Hot tears streak your cheeks, dripping off the jut of your chin with every gasping breath from the knot in your throat tangling tighter and tighter. All you can hear are ugly gasping breaths as you rock back and forth in the dark.Â
The sliver of light spilling in from the cracked door doesnât register given the way your face is buried in your hands. Soonyoung has half a mind to pretend he never entered the cramped space. Heâs never seen you so⌠small.
A shrill squeak of the hinge alert you to the new presence. Bloodshot eyes find his wide ones and you swipe at your face to hide the evidence of your distress. You go to speak but barely manage a croak before the tears come again.
âShit,â Soonyoung whispers. âItâs okay, itâs alright.â
The warmth of his chest makes you cry harder, tears spilling onto his neck as you hide from the world. He smooths the flat of his palm across your back.
It's anyoneâs guess how long you stay there. Soonyoungâs cheek rests on the top of your head, arms firm around your shoulders. The faint smell of smoke tickles your nose. Smoke and pine from his cologne. It tethers your mind, lulling the frantic breakdown and giving you something to focus on other than how horrible the day has become in the span of a few hours.
No baked goods. Horrible customers. And now youâre being held by the handsome fighter from next door with snot dripping from your nose.
Soonyoung hesitates when you shift in his hold, arms tightening for a second in case another bout of tears crops up. But you pull far enough away to send an embarrassed grimace his way before looking anywhere else.
âSorry.â You say, turning to snatch napkins from the shelf next to you.
His hand continues to rub your shoulders as you dab your eyes and blow your nose.Â
âItâs okay. That guy was a jerk.â
âI donât care what he said.âÂ
Soonyoung stares in disbelief, waiting for you to continue.Â
âMy baker canceled on me, and the espresso machine is held together with duct tape, and there's a million other things going wrong, not to mention the fire alarm. And I justâŚâ
Squeezing your eyes tight to prevent the moisture swelling in the corners proves unhelpful. To Soonyoungâs credit he stays silent, allowing you all the time you need to get your thoughts in order. But the hand on your back continuing to trace abstract shapes between your shoulder blades lets you know heâs there when youâre ready.
âItâs just been a rough week.â You say to the floor.
The admission lifts the ten pound weight off your chest. Soonyoung isnât an employee you need to guarantee everything is okay to or a customer requiring a mask. Heâs aâŚfriend? It feels generous but if he was anything less you doubt heâd be where he is now.
âIs there any way I can help?â
You blow your nose into the tissue before laughing wetly. âI donât suppose you have a magic wand, do you?â
âJust broke mine actually.â He winces sarcastically.
Whatâs another thing on your never ending to-do list? Along with the desperate need to buy more supplies for tomorrow, how difficult can it be to conjure artisan baked goods out of thin air?
âActually,â Soonyoung perks. âJihoonâs girlfriend works at a bakery. Peteâs? No, wait. Pennyâs?â
âPetuniaâs?â
âThatâs the one! Maybe I can ask her if she can help?â
âGood luck.â You snort. âThey couldnât even fit me into their normal rotation.â
âWe wonât know until we ask!â He chips, thrilled he can help.
Soonyoung jumps up, a cruel chill invading the space he once occupied. Like the sun moving behind a cloud and leaving you at the mercy of a cool breeze; there and gone before you can delve into what it means.
You hand him the order form you usually give your baker to relay to Jihoonâs girlfriend. While he steps out to ask for a miracle you focus on tallying how many cups, napkins, lids, and other miscellaneous items you need from the supply store across town. A few lone tears appear, falling without much preamble but the worst is out and stained on Soonyoungâs shoulder. Youâll get through it. With Soonyoungâs help youâll get past everything, even if his efforts fall flat.
Seungcheol and Seungkwan confirm theyâve got things under control as you take your leave. Soonyoung is just visible in the dissipating morning fog hanging in the street. He paces the sidewalk, speaking into his phone animatedly before spotting you trying to sneak past him to your car.
âThank you! Youâre the best!â He cheers before hanging up and pocketing his phone.
âSo?â
âTheyâll do it! One of the other shops dropped out last minute and they have a lot of extras. Maybe not all the usual stuff but Rita said she can pull together most of the stuff on the form.â
Body frozen, you stare at Soonyoung with an open mouth and eyes wide. Thereâs no way he solved half your workload with one phone call.
âShe also said they can try and work you into their usual orders. If thatâs something youâre interested inâŚâ Soonyoung trails off, glancing at you nervously.Â
In a blink your back in his arms, squeezing him so hard your arms hurt.
âThank you. Thank you. Thank you.â You chant into his chest.
âOf course.â
Stepping back, you blush at your own impulsiveness.Â
âUm, wellâŚâ you fumble, clearing your throat you get back to the task at hand. âI need to run to the store so Iâll see you later.â
âI can come!âÂ
âNo! I mean, youâve already helped so much. Iâd feel bad dragging you along.â
âDonât worry about me, I'm just trying to make sure you donât start crying again and cause an accident.â
âOkay, rude.â
Soonyoung ignores you, already strutting down the street.
âYour cars this way, right?â
âNo.â
âListen, I wanna come with you. I have nothing else to do today.â
âCool,â You laugh, continuing the opposite direction Soonyoung headed. âbut my car is still this way.â
The drive is pleasant. You learn more about Soonyoung in the thirty minutes it takes to get across town than youâve learned in the weeks heâs been coming to the cafe. He has an older sister, he likes to volunteer at the youth center down the street in his time off, and he cannot work a computer if his life depends on it. You also learn more about his coworker turned best friend who also happens to be the boyfriend of your new god.
âYeah Jihoon and I started the same day. He comes off kinda cold but it's all an act.â
âOh, really?â You laugh, pulling into a cramped parking spot.
âOne hundred percent. You should see him with Rita. I never saw him blush that much until they started dating.â
âHowâd they meet?â
âFunny story.â Soonyoung shares, climbing out of the passenger seat. âSo the bakery she worked at before had a fire. No one was hurt and they put it out before we even got there! But we went to make sure everything was clear. Well, Rita was there and I swear it was love at first sight for him.â
âThatâs sweet.â
You both make your way inside the sliding doors; Soonyoung pushing a flat cart behind you through the aisles.Â
âHeâs definitely mellowed out since he met her. Doesnât work as much, thank god.â
âWhat about your girlfriend? Do you guys have the same Hallmark meet cute?â
âOh! I donât have a girlfriend.â Soonyoung mumbles, ears turning scarlett.
Your face heats as well. Whatever force compelled you to ask such a prying question revels in satisfaction to hear Soonyoung is in fact single. A tidbit of information youâve never wondered about before.

âSorry I couldnât get you anything for today.â Rita says as she helps unpack everything onto the counter.
The cafe is scarce of customers, far past closing time but Rita said theyâd be too busy delivering to their other customers in the morning to spare a trip to you. What's another Tuesday at the shop? It isn't like you have time for much of a social life given the million things you need to do.
âReally donât worry about it. You're saving my life by getting me this stuff for tomorrow.â
âWell Soonyoung made a bargain I couldnât refuse.â
You pause for a moment. Soonyoung didn't mention anything beyond the payment Rita quoted and later sent via email. Did he promise something from the shop on your behalf?
Swallowing the budding annoyance, you continue to work like nothing is wrong. âOh?â
âI mean an entire month of covering Jihoonâs shifts? What kind of person passes that up?â
What?
Soonyoung offered to sacrifice all his free time to help you. Soonyoung who you barely know beyond the fact that he pretends to like black coffee. The man chews with his mouth open. Soonyoung who let you ruin his sweater with tears and snot from a horrible day.
âYou didnât know?â Rita asks, face full of mirth.
âUgh, no,â you cough. âHe didnât tell me that.â
âI was shocked when he offered. He wouldnât do that for just anyone.â
But he did it for you.
âYeah.â
âY/N?âÂ
You find Rita smiling like she knows some big secret. If you had to guess, it's probably the same thing you're realizing now.
âSoonyoungâs a great guy.â
Words fail you because you know Soonyoung is a great guy. He held you when you cried, he comes in everyday without fail to turn off the alarm, and he just sacrificed a month of his life because it would help you.
Once you and Rita unpack the remaining cookies and cakes, she takes her leave but not before dropping another wink when she spots Soonyoung approaching from the direction of the fire house.
âRita.â he greets at the door, holding it open for her exit.
âHosh.â
And sheâs gone without another word.
âHowâs it going?â Soonyoung asks, rounding the counter to join you.
âGreat!â You blurt with too much enthusiasm. âRita ended up making everything we needed.â
A second set of hands assists in packing the glass display case in preparation for tomorrow's chaos. Soonyoung listens well. Patient to a T as you direct him to tweak things just so from the opposite side of the bar.
âThank you for all your help this week. I donât know what I wouldâve done if you werenât here to help.â
He continues to unpack the few remaining goods beneath the counter as he responds. âItâs not a big deal. What are friends for?â
âHmm and you agree to cover all of Jihoonâs shifts for your friends?â
Leaning back against the opposite counter, you watch Soonyoungâs shoulder tense and his ears erupt into bright red. Heâs so still he doesnât even seem to be breathing at the shock of being caught. Each passing second heightens the smirk curling your lips.Â
âOh, you heard about that?â He asks into the counter.
You saddle up beside him, dropping your head until his eyes meet your own. Each inch of space you claim next to him sends him away like an opposing magnet; until your sandwich between him and the hardwood.
âYeah, I heard.â
Soonyoung backs away nervously but not before you catch the way his eyes cut to your mouth. Who knew all it took is a smile and batting your eyelashes to make chatty Soonyoung clam up? The shyness bubbling on the edge of your conscious fizzles with the new knowledge; instead, curiosity takes its place. How much more can you make him blush? What would he do if you grabbed his hand? Or if you took a chance and kissed him?
âSoonyoung?â
âYeah?â
âDo you have a crush on me?â You smile around each word.
He opens his mouth to argue but it's moot with the way you gaze at him, eyes shining with mirth. Like you're laughing at some shared joke. Soonyoung will tell you whatever truths you want to hear if it means youâll keep looking at him like that.
âYeah.â Soonyoung whispers so quietly you almost donât hear him.
âGood.âÂ
You step into his space with finality, chests brushing with each breath.Â
âGood?âÂ
The edge of your teeth pinning your lip down is the only thing preventing a smile from ripping across your face as you answer. âBecause I have a crush on you too.â
âOhâŚâ He nods, head dropping dejectedly and then it hits him and whips back up so fast his eyeballs rattle. âOH. You do?â
He watches you nod, slowly angling himself to connect your lips. When Soonyoung realizes you arenât going to push him away, evident by the hand fisted in his sweater, he goes for it.
The curve of your lip, the breathy sigh you release into his mouth, the way you seem to go boneless with each pass are all committed to his memory. Soonyoung reminds himself to be good. That this is the first time heâs kissing you and he should be a gentleman; gentle, chaste, respectful.Â
And he would succeed but youâre acting like you have no interest in any of those things. You whisper another heavenly sigh into his mouth, trailing a hand in the short strands of hair at the base of his skull forcing Soonyoung to focus on batting away the demons at the edge of his mind rather than giving into temptation.
But when you tug to angle his head better the delicious sting drowns Soonyoung so quickly he has you pinned to the counter before he realizes what's happening.
Sometime later, when your lips are swollen and the floor sways beneath you from the flood of giddiness coursing through your veins, you and Soonyoung part. The crisp air of the late night tries in vain to nip at your face but youâre too distracted by the calluses on the side of Soonyoungâs thumb and the way they rasp against your knuckles as he walks you to your car.

The cafe is in full swing by the time Soonyoung comes in Wednesday morning.Â
All morning he paced across the cramped common room of the fire station. Sure you let him kiss you but what did it all mean? He knows you like him but did you like like him or just like him? Should he have asked you on a date? Would that be too forward? Did he mess things up by not immediately asking you out despite the fact he was so love drunk he ran into a pole after watching you drive off?
He fights the idea of running across the street and demanding answers. Youâre definitely too busy to spare a second and tame the butterflies in his stomach. And how pathetic would he look if he asked you to explicitly dictate how you feel so no wires end up cross? And on Valentineâs day no less?
Luckily, heâs saved by the bell. Or rather the fire alarm.
He watches you work like a tornado, pausing only to smile at him the same way you did last night when he did not so safe for work things against the very counter lined with coffee cups and steaming mugs. Flashes of memory heat across his face.
You thank him with his usual coffee and one of the cupcakes you set aside just for him. Except this time his paper cup is scribbled with a heart and something else.
Be my Valentine? _Yes _ Also Yes _ YES BUT LOUD
At some point he should tell you about the sensitivity setting on the alarm and how all you need to do is nudge the tiny lever to the right if you don't want it going off every time the steam builds up. But the way you beam at him when he steals the sharpie from behind your ear and checks all three boxes on the cup makes Soonyoung decide itâs a secret heâll keep for now.
