The gates of the king’s palace stand tall in front of you, sleek twisted metal reaching high into the sky, disappearing into the glittering sea of blackness above. There’s a chill in the air tonight, the gentle wind whipping against your face, cheeks red from the cold, skin covered in goosebumps. The shawl you’ve been leant does nothing to keep you warm, but the kind gesture from the lady of your house is enough to keep you happy.

But, you don’t know why you’re here. In the years you’ve been a servant for one of the many noble vampire families, never had you been invited along to the king’s palace. That was a luxury a rare few besides the nobles got to enjoy, the servants usually staying at home, cooking or cleaning and sneaking in a few extra minutes of sleep. You don’t belong in the company of the king, no one truly does.

The rays of the morning sun spilled through the windows, swept across the reflective tiles, and attempted to relax your uniform-clad frame. But nothing could beat the tenseness whose fingers were quickly curling around your shoulders with the danger of clamping and staying there for the entirety of the day. The foot-tall stack of papers your boss had plopped onto your desk seemed to glare back at you, and you tried not to entirely hate his existence.

“Get to work,” he had muttered as soon as you’d step through the doors.

You’d tried not to groan at the back breaking prospect of having to log everything in the computer, should he hear you.  After all, you figured this was what came with the job of working in one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. Since you were only a hotel receptionist, you had never actually been in any of the rooms, but simply walking through the shimmering, sparkling lobby that was thirty times the size of your dorm was enough of an experience.

Chandeliers and high-class paintings and tiles that could just as well be mirrors and the too-taunting smell of food you couldn’t dream to afford filled the entire space. Your eyes glanced back at the daunting papers.

Yes, this was part of the job.

“Hello,” a voice shattered your thoughts, a tune that was sweet and bright and hinted to you of playfulness that seemed entirely unfitting for this too-early hour. Your signature for-the-customer smile was already upon your face before you even glanced up. Then, it disappeared.

If the sun rays had anything to rival with, it was the man before you. He stood tall, with a smile that promised the friendliest of exchanges upon his lips, a flower print shirt that made him seem like he was on a Hawaiian vacation, a testament to youth and beauty as he glowed in front of you.

“I…uh, want to check out,” he attempted to break your dazed spell with his voice. You flushed when you realized you had taken too much care in memorizing the shade of his blonde hair that swept over his brows, and the shape of his lips that smiled back at you so easily, or the deep chocolate hue of his irises-

“Hello?”

You cursed, eyelids blinking hard. “I’m so sorry, I…I can take your room key now.”

Your flustered actions made him hesitate for a few seconds, and you feared that you had made him angry.

But instead, a beautiful laugh was blooming through the air from him, and you had to remind yourself to not fall into your damned trance yet again upon looking at his face twisted so pleasantly in laughter.

“You’re cute.”
