Hello! You’re very welcome! I actually enjoy answering asks haha. It helps that most asks I’ve received so far have been polite 😊 

The matter you’re referring to got blown out of proportion not truly because of copyright infringement, but because Li Zeyan stans and MLQC players felt insulted from comments made by a particular broadcast, and its spillover effect.

On August 7, one Chinese pop idol Yan Haoxiang (let’s abbreviate his name as YHX) appeared in a live broadcast, during which he voiced some of Li Zeyan’s lines. After watching a video of Li Zeyan’s birthday message in the game, he proceeded to make comments which infuriated Li Zeyan’s stans. These comments included “This feels so weird” (“好奇怪啊”）, “People actually like characters like this?” （“大家都喜欢这样的吗”）and “This line is so shameless” （“这句话太羞耻了吧”）. 

War ensued on Weibo. A group of YHX fans started calling MLQC players and Li Zeyan stans in particular a variety of rather terrible names which I shall not repeat here, and some others even started questioning why people would like 2D characters. Could they have children with the player? Did they have bowel movements? The upshot of it was that Li Zeyan stans were “stupid” , “daydreamers” or “unloveable people” for thinking that they could actually marry Li Zeyan, and that Li Zeyan would die when Papergames closed down. (Cultural note: Casually mentioning death in Chinese culture is a big taboo. It’s like cursing the person.)

Needless to say, MLQC players returned fire in a similar fashion. It was also discovered that the live broadcast had used Li Zeyan’s lines without having gotten the rights from Papergames, which laid the foundation for the “copyrights infringement” argument that you mentioned. MLQC players began putting pressure on Papergames to protect the players’ rights and defend them by taking action against the live broadcast company or YHX’s agency. 

Yesterday, August 9, Papergames released an official statement on Weibo that the legal department would be looking into this issue. On the same day, YHX’s agency also clarified that the platform which had released the broadcast was responsible for the copyright infringement matter, and that they had nothing to do with it.

Hopefully that’s a relatively neutral narration of the sequence of events that came down. Personally, I think the issue that really sparked this “war” wasn’t so much the fact that copyright infringement was potentially involved, but that there was too much mud-slinging and personal attacks going on on both sides.

i. the boss

The LFG is getting on your nerves again.

A sigh escaping your mouth, you place your chin on your hand, perfectly manicured fingernails drumming along your cheek as you contemplate giving the CEO Victor Li a personal ring. Should you let him know just what you think about him sponsoring another media company beside yours? 

Your media and broadcasting corporation has single handedly dominated the media field since you had taken over it as its head. You had fought tooth and claw to secure funding for what had been nothing but a small company back then, and now Victor wants to give free handouts to an unknown company at the side? Preposterous.

You hit send on your laptop before you lean back in your plush chair, picking up the glass of vintage red at your side and spinning around in your seat to look at the city skyline. Beneath your feet, you see other smaller buildings all bearing your logo glowing in the night, and a sense of quiet pride fills you at how far you’ve come. This is the empire you’ve built with your own two hands. 

Your father would be proud of what you’ve achieved.

Leaning back in your seat, you close your eyes and raise your glass to take a sip of your wine, slightly nostalgic - right before the beverage is plucked from your hand.

Annoyance flares in you.

“Just what do you think you’re doing-” You open your eyes to see just who has the audacity to stop you from enjoying your alcohol, and gleaming, honest amber eyes stare back at you. Your annoyance dies immediately. “Oh, it’s you.” Your breath hitches in your throat, but you move to recline in your seat and give him a winning smile. “Gavin.”

Your head bodyguard stands before you, dressed in a smart black suit and your wine glass in his hand, looking crisp and alert as ever. “It’s past one.” He says calmly, setting the glass down on the table, just out of your reach. The crystal glass clinks against the polished surface of your work desk, wine stem delicate between his fingers. “You shouldn’t be drinking so late at night.”

His voice is low and even, and yet you find yourself hanging onto his every word. The way his lips shape those words are so pretty, you think to yourself. What wouldn’t you give to have those lips on yours instead?

“I just wanted one little sip.” You tilt your head to the side and bat your lashes at him, trying not so subtly to reach over for the wine glass again. He shifts the drink to the side in an instant, his gaze not leaving yours for the slightest second, firm and unrelenting. You love that about him, how he dares to stand up to you when others throw themselves at your feet to please and curry favour with you. It’s like a breath of fresh air in this stifling industry. “Ahh, you won’t even let me finish my glass? You’re a cruel one, Gavin.”

He swallows, adam’s apple bobbing and the tips of his ears reddened under the ambient lights placed in your office. “Please stop teasing me, Miss.” He says, a hint of helplessness in his voice as he turns around to hand the glass off to one of your attendants. You smile behind his back, watching him with amusement dancing in your gaze. Three years of waiting, and he’s still the one thing he won’t let you have.

With a fond sigh, you rise to your feet and walk over to the chaise lounge that you usually reserve for important clients, sinking into the plush velvet gratefully. You’re tired from all of the arguing you’ve done with your managatorial board this afternoon, and in a moment of impulse, bend down to tug off your designer heels. Tossing them to the side, you press down on the arch of your feet lightly. 

It’s been a long day at work, and while you want nothing more than to fall into your king sized bed wrapped in silk pajamas, there are still issues that you need to deal with before you wrap up for the day. “Gavin, be a darling and get me some Arabica, would you?”

“You’ll mess up your sleep cycle again if you drink coffee at this time.” Gavin warns, stepping forward to kneel with one knee on the polished hardwood floor before you. His large hands gently grasp your foot, rough pads of his fingers tracing along the sensitive sides to rub and you shiver, trying hard not to squirm in your seat. “I’ve told you before, you don’t need to wear heels if you don’t want to.”

His strong fingers press into the aching soles of your feet and you can’t help but let out a little sigh of pleasure, head falling back and eyes slipping shut. “Of course I could, but heels make a woman feel confident, you know? I need to step into this place feeling I could kick everyone’s ass- ahh, right there.” His hands falter just a second on your foot, but he quickly catches himself and continues to rub soothing circles into your heels before you can notice. 

“I’ll have to set alarms to remind you to take off your shoes, then.” He says so seriously that you blink at him for a second and then laugh, leaning forward just enough to so that you’re eye to eye with him. 

“You shouldn’t be so sweet to me, you know.” you say playfully, watching as he turns rigid at the feeling of your breath ghosting over the shell of his ear. His fingers tighten subconsciously around your ankle, but he’s aware enough not to hurt - Gavin would never hurt you. “It’s almost like you’re trying to enamour me.”

You’re all too aware that you’re teasing him, but how could you possibly resist when his reactions are always so honest, so fun to watch? Gavin swallows hard, amber eyes fixed on your feet. “I’m just… doing my job, Miss.”

“And you do it a little too well.” You hum, fingers dragging lightly down the side of his cheek to rest on his lips. They tremble under your touch, and you can feel each tiny exhale that leaves his mouth warming your skin. His lips are a little chapped, and you wonder whether he’ll let you daub your own lip balm across them if you ask. You’d know then he’d taste of strawberries the way your own lips do. “You give me everything, and yet you won’t let me have what I want most. You’re a bad, bad man, Gavin Bai.” 

You hear his sharp intake of breath before he’s pulling away quickly, and while you do miss the heat of his body so close to yours, the red staining the tops of his ears make it well worth your due. “I should get you home, Miss.” Gavin clears his throat, decidedly not meeting your eyes. You let out a quick laugh of amusement at that before you rise to your feet, a satisfied smile on your face. “Alright, alright. I’ll go home.”

You move to slip your heels back on when one of Gavin’s hands close around your wrist gently. “You don’t need to put them on again.” He says, looking down at the heels in your hands with the slightest hint of distaste on his otherwise stoic face. A small laugh leaves your lips.

“I need to get to the car, at the very least,” you tell him, amused, and Gavin lets out a small sigh, looking between you and the heels. After a few seconds of quick contemplation, Gavin turns to you, holding out his arms. “Here, I’ll carry you. That way, you won’t have to put on your heels.”

A smile curls at the corner of your lips. You have no complaints there. Gavin spoils you rotten, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
