Camp Camp Season 4 episode 1 spoilers below!! 

Rewatching the new Camp Camp episode, I got to the ending (which I LOVED by the way) and realized that when David and Max say “Oh my god” in unison and stare at their hands in horror, it didn’t quite make a tooooon of sense for Max to do so the way I first thought. I saw it as them both reacting the same way to “People CAN change, for better, OR for worse! You two are really rubbing off on each other!” David was reacting like “Oh gosh, I did something bad??? Who am I? What’s becoming of me?” staring at his hands in shock that he would do something like that. So I thought Max was doing the same, like “oh my god, ew, I’m becoming more like DAVID?? Who am I, some sort of overly sweet annoying sap???” 

But the thing is, nothing Max did in that episode/scene/moment showed him being particularly better/different from Beginning-of-Season-1 Max. So I realized… it’s possible Max wasn’t thinking “Oh my god, what have I become?” like David was, but instead “Oh my god, what have I done? Am I really making David a worse person? Do I just ruin good people? Shit.” 

Season 1 Max would’ve been thrilled to “crack him.” Season 4 Max doesn’t want David to be more like himself, because if he were, he’d never have shown Max the unconditional kindness that he did. He’s the one person who’s proven to Max that he’s not a bad person – and even though the episode centered around Max trying to prove he was still bad, David knows better. Like he said in Season 2: “You have every right to be angry. But you deserve to be happy.”

And HOO BOY if that ain’t some angst fodder right there!
