Finished reading graphic novel of “Moon Rising” of the Wings of Fire series. Was excited to see the start of the second arc especially since it introduces one of my favorite friendships of the series- Moon and Kinkajou!

Just thinking about how wild it is that both Winter and Qibli have masks that they hide behind. Winter is the perfect IceWing prince on the outside and he tries to be the perfect son his parents want while Qibli tries to be the perfect everything. Qibli’s main line of defense is to be what you want him to be. He’ll figure out the perfect thing to say or do and do it.

In the narrative Winter is forced to confront the facade he’s built around himself and acknowledge that, by living up to it, he is only hurting himself and those he cares about - but Qibli is never forced to confront that.

His overthinking is supposed to be a sign of his intelligence, instead of a symptom of his deep anxiety about being thrown away by those he loves. It must be absolutely awful to feel that you need to be constantly scheming in order for people to continue to love you. 

I suppose the irony of it all is that Winter had the most obvious mask and yet he can’t help but be so genuine and vulnerable, and yet Qibli is all smoke and mirrors and that was never really acknowledged.

Something I fucking LOVE about the Wings of Fire series is how the changes in character point of view affects narrative perspective on other characters.

In The Lost Heir, when the story is told from Tsunami's perspective, Tsunami's dialogue is portrayed at the same level as all of the other characters. However, in the following three books, which are told from Glory, Starflight, and Sunny's perspectives (in that order)), Tsunami's dialogue is more often than not written in all caps, showing that from the perspective of quieter, more reserved characters, she acts like some gungho hothead that's constantly screaming till she goes hoarse. This is something that continues in the first book of the second saga, Moon Rising, where the perspective is that of a socially anxious telepath (named Moonwatcher). From Moon's perspective, Tsunami is, again, very loud and aggressive, even internally.

It's just a little detail of the series that I absolutely love.
