Sometimes I think about whether Kenji is fully aware of how much Shiro has changed through the course of their relationship. If he is fully cognizant of just how damn much Shiro smiles now, how often joy lights his face when they’re together, how much more relaxed and at peace he is with the life he has chosen. I think it’s hard to see that, sometimes, when you’re so close and the change is gradual. But for us, the audience, who just check in on them from time to time across years of their lives, the change in him is so stark. If I go back to the start of season 1 and compare that Shiro to the Shiro who happily sat across the table from Kenji’s family today and agreed he was part of them, I’d hardly believe they are the same person. It’s such a beautiful thing to get to witness.
