It is a paradox but people are greedy, when they THINK they are stealing. We had a big cherry tree close to our unfenced property and for some reason folks thought they had to come at night and sweep it clean. We solved that problem by telling everybody in the neighborhood it is free and they could come and from that year on it never happened again.

My grandmother told me when she went to school the female teacher once called her out in front of the whole class becasue she was wearing a pantyhose/thights and they looked too much like pants in the teachers opinion. She was terrified and tried to defend her clothes for at least 20 minutes. If you wore pants to school as a girl the teachers were allowed to beat you with a ruler or they slapped you in the face. That was in the late 50s early 60s. 

Side note: She married young with 16. Out of love. But back then she had to ask my grandpa for a “permission slip” that she was allowed by her husband to work. WITHOUT HER HUSBANS PERMISSION SHE WAS FORBIDDEN TO WORK.

NEVER FORGET this was not even 70 years ago.
