Salazar Slytherin: not a genocidal dickhead, the TL;DR version

-Slytherin didn’t want muggle-born kids to come to Hogwarts because the school was built in the 900s AD, a time when muggles were burning magic folk alive, and Slytherin didn’t want muggles to discover Hogwarts through “double agents.” He reluctance to accept muggle-born students at his school was misread and misconstrued over 1000 years to bring us to the timeline of Harry Potter. -Slytherin built a panic room that only he could open in case the school did come under attack. He put a creature in the panic room that only he could control, a monster that could annihilate an entire army just by looking at them, that could also get around parts of the castle inside the walls (though there was no indoor plumbing at the time, where were latrine chutes and sewer systems). Over that 1000 years, it became legend and myth, which is also where it got its sinister name. -Tom Riddle was the first to locate and open it since Slytherin (that we can be sure of) and he did that in 1943. Some time between 1943 and 1992 (the year of CoS) Tom Riddle did some remodeling, turning it into the Chamber we know now. -The “Heir of Slytherin” ideology is just part of the myth: any parseltongue could have opened the chamber, just as any parseltongue could have re-trained the basilisk to obey them.
