Series Masterlist | <-prev

It wasn’t the way he held you the entire night, or the way he kept his lips pressed against your head even though you were in too much of a deep sleep to even notice. It was the sincerity in his confession that made you understand that everything will work out.
Genuinely, this time.
Had he not been so sure of those three words, you may have doubted your future together. Doubted how to possibly deal with the situation you were thrown in. But the way those words flowed so easily past his lips, the way it sounded so casual yet sincere, that’s what makes you confidently believe that, despite everything, you’ll be just fine.
He’s not going anywhere, and neither are you.
The power of love is something that you only recently started to grasp, and now, standing in the midst of it, you feel secure. You feel a sense of permanence.
He feels permanent.
And because he feels permanent, you trust that no matter what happens and no matter what his ex tries to do, you’ll still be by his side. You’re convinced that nothing will tear you apart, and if it tries— you’ll simply fight.
Because you will not lose the man you love over bitterness from his ex. And Jungkook certainly won’t allow you to leave.
However, as much as this new, powerful feeling feels abundant to you— you’ve still yet to grasp the concept of another thing.
The underside of love.
Had you known that sweet night with Jungkook would have resulted in a bitter morning, you would have at least prepared yourself. However you didn’t. So now, days after, you’re left with an odd feeling of uncertainty in your stomach.
Waking up that morning beside Jungkook was when the tension was at its highest. And not the good kind. Ten minutes is the amount of time you both laid there, completely silent but also completely aware that the other was awake. His awkward “good morning” followed by him exiting the bed on his own certainly did not help the painfully awkward atmosphere, and you didn’t know what was preventing you both from being normal like always.
You feared the confession of love may have come out too soon and now you both don’t know how to socialize with one another without it being awkward, but you’ve convinced yourself it’s not that. You’re both just naturally shy, so the initial awkwardness following your first “I love you” was inevitable.
He did however suggest to shower together that morning after the confession, but like an idiot, you told him it’d be best for him to head home early to beat traffic.
And other than picking up your car from his place and shutting down his open invitation to go grocery shopping with him, you haven’t really talked. Other than a couple of naughty texting sessions late at night (one thing you’re surprisingly not shy about anymore), you haven’t actually spoken since.
But lucky for you, you’ve been keeping company with someone who you can talk to about your love troubles.
“So let me get this straight, you told him he couldn’t shower at your place?”
Stacking your last pile of new arrival books onto the display table, you turn to your boss with heavy lids and a fading yawn escaping you.
“No, Helen, I told him he should probably go home when he suggested it. It’s completely different.”
When explaining that night's events to Helen in Vague detail (still making sure to be cautious when talking about Jungkook given you’re still practically lying to the poor woman about who he really is and how exactly you two met) you found yourself just as confused as her.
Nothing beats the expressions on her face as your recap went from hurt to love to unsure all in a matter of minutes. But you don’t blame her. Your heart is making the same expressions.
“Okay, I’m lost. You confessed your love to each other. Isn’t that supposed to be a good thing?”
Turning your full attention to Helen, you sigh as you place both hands on your hips— exhausted.
“That’s a great thing, but what isn’t so great is that we’re both not good at talking about those kinds of things. Now everything is weird and awkward between us.”
Helen's pity frown only encourages you to continue.
“I mean you should’ve been there when I asked if I was his girlfriend earlier that day. He literally slapped a knee and said ‘alrighty then’ like he didn’t know what other approach to take.”
“Well then it looks to me he’s just shy,” Helen bargains. You know there’s truth in that, but you don’t bother to agree.
“I just wish he’d reach out first,” you huff as you lean against the bookshelf, eyes drifting shut as you try to soothe yourself just a bit with gentle breathing. Helen beats you to it, placing a kind hand to your upper arm.
“He’s probably thinking the same thing.”
And she’s right again. You know Jungkook is just a shy dork that’s probably forming texts only to delete them over and over again. You know he wants to reach out but can’t bring himself to. And you know you have the ability to just put an end to it and talk to him like a lover and not some shy girl with a crush.
But before you can even think to go and text him, he beats you to it.
Your eyes snap open and you reach for your chiming phone in your back pocket all in one quick motion, almost startling Helen who was now in alert mode after being jolted from your quick movement.
The chimes don’t stop and you almost think he’s calling until you see your screen light up with several text messages.
loml❤️: Hey, are you busy?
loml❤️: I’m sorry for texting so randomly.
loml❤️: I’m also sorry for not texting at all these past few days.
Dork.
loml❤️: But an emergency came up and if you’re free then I can really use your help…
You want to smile at his use of ellipsis but you’re too busy being concerned at his alarming message. Quickly, you reply.
You: what happened? are you okay?
It takes you a moment to remember Helen is still there, and with frantic eyes you spare her a glance before refocusing on the typing bubble on your screen.
“He’s saying there’s an emergency and asking if I’m busy,” you catch her up.
Helen hums, not nearly as distressed as you.
loml❤️: Yes, no one is hurt don’t worry.
loml❤️: I got called in to sub for an afternoon lecture just now but I have Dahlia here at the house and my babysitter is out sick.
loml❤️: I tried calling her old daycare but they won’t accept her because she exceeds the age limit.
He’s yet to ask what exactly he needs your help with, but you can take a wild guess. Before he can render up the courage to ask it, you spare him the hesitation and agree.
You: i’m at work right now but i can leave early
You: what time do you have to leave? i’ll try to make it there as fast as i can
As Jungkook types, you once again take a moment to catch Helen up, slightly more energized as you stand up straight again as you casually inform her.
“He’s asking me to babysit, his original babysitter is out sick and he got called in to substitute a lecture.”
And oh how you wish you did not fill her in.
You realized your mistake as soon as you finished your sentence, but before you could explain to Helen what you just said, her furrowed brows accompany her following question.
“What do you mean babysit? Babysit what? A dog? And what do you mean substitute?”
There’s a strum of silence as you squeeze your eyes shut and contemplate your next words. You can either carry on with the lie that he’s only a classmate, or you can confess to her that you are seeing your professor that has a child.
And if she weren’t such an important grandma-like figure to you who's been there for it all ever since you were a teen, you probably wouldn’t have settled with option b.
“That was my initial thought when I found out he was a dad too.”
Another strum of silence as she registers what it is you’re saying.
“A dad?” She reiterates in a calm yet shocked tone, demeanor never changing as she scans your eyes, seeing how you’re telling nothing but the truth.
You didn’t have it in you to lie to her, but you also don’t have it in you to expose the full truth. Sighing, you scramble for words as you try your best to explain why you can’t tell her instead.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that part, it’s just— there’s a lot I can’t really tell you and I wish I could but hopefully someday I will and I’m so sorry for not saying anyth—”
“Y/N,” she interrupts. “I don’t care. That’s your life and I respect your privacy and trust your doing what you think is right for you.”
And just like that, you feel some weight lift off of your shoulders. You lean in for a quick hug before pulling away with a small “thank you” and absentminded pout.
You feel somewhat relieved that she knows some of the truth, and you feel satisfied that you didn’t go overboard on the details. Of course she now knows he’s a dad, but hopefully she forgets about the professor part as you decided to just forgo it completely.
She knows enough, and you’re glad you don’t have to carry the burden of secrecy anymore. You’re also beyond grateful for her understanding.
“Boy or girl?” She asks curiously as you tap your phone screen back on.
“Girl. She’s four. He’s so good to her too and she adores him so much. It makes me want to have a kid someday.”
You won’t address it to yourself, but you already feel giddy just talking about him. Talking about the life you’ve been living with him the past month. Helen notices, and with a knowing grin, she smiles with a nod at your last sentence. However you don’t see it as you’re too busy checking Jungkook’s text.
loml❤️: Lecture starts in about 45 minutes so I’d have to leave as soon as you get here.
loml❤️: Thank you, by the way. I know this is asking for a lot but you’re the only one who came to mind.
loml❤️: Maybe when I get back you can stay so we can talk? I’ve missed you these past days. I hate being awkward with you, we’re way past that phase.
You didn’t realize you were smiling until your cheeks began to ache, and you’re quick to show off your message to Helen like it’s a trophy.
You hit the jackpot with him, you think to yourself.
Helen lets out an airy giggle at your enthusiasm and you quickly pull the phone away as soon as she’s done reading to type your response.
You: i’ll be there in 15 mins
You: i’d love to talk, missed u more
You: and don’t mention it, always happy to hang out with lia :)
loml❤️: You’re the best. See you soon.
Putting your phone back into your pocket, you bring your attention back on Helen, a playful guilty look as you both know your following question.
“So can I clock out early—”
“Get outta here,” she interrupts with a giggle, gently pushing you away.
Your laugh fades as you twist around to head for the back room to grab your things, but before you can make it far a hand is placed on your shoulder.
“One last thing before you go,” Helen starts, causing you to turn back around halfway.
“What is it?”
Her smile is soft, eyes gleaming in certainty.
“I have a feeling the babysitter isn’t sick.”
Your head tilts to the side as you try to understand what she means.
“What do you mean? Why would he lie about that?”
“Because he trusts you.”
Trusts?
Helen sees your confusion only grow so she continues.
“He trusts you to watch his daughter. He’s trying to tell you that if he can trust you then you can trust him.”
You’re brought back to when you were going over that nights events with Helen. You told her about the part where you told him you didn’t trust him. Now, you understand exactly what she means.
And she may be right, you think.
Awestruck, you don’t move for a moment as you take in Jungkook’s sneaky yet heartwarming method of communication.
Helen smiles, informing you of one last observation before sending you your way.
“I also think he jumped at the first opportunity he got to text you first.”
“We are all fools in love,” —a quote you’ve grown familiar with. And realizing it now, Jungkook may be the biggest lovestruck fool on Earth.
And you are wholeheartedly in love with that lovestruck fool.

Standing in front of his big fancy door, you knock three times.
Dahlia is the first one you see appear through the doors glass window, and a frantic Jungkook buttoning his shirt while holding an open zippy cup in one hand follows behind her. Nearly tripping over each other, Jungkook makes it to the door, a kind smile on his face despite the rush he’s in.
“Hey,” he speaks softly, Dahlia's excited shouts overpowering him.
You can’t help but smile at how distressed he is, humming a hi back as you close the door behind you and reach for his buttons.
Buttoning the remaining of his shirt, you turn to face Dahlia, seeing how she’s patiently waiting for Jungkook to refill her juice.
“I’ll go take care of her, finish getting ready,” you tell him, patting his chest twice to signal you’re done buttoning his shirt.
Jungkook grins, all tension leaving him as he allows himself to breathe. And with a quick smile, he grabs your cheeks and pulls you in for a kiss. However, you’re quick to pull away with wide eyes as you know Dahlia is right there.
“What about what Nessa said?” You whisper.
His smile doesn’t fade when he whispers back, “what about it?”
You only tilt your head, assuming it’d be obvious given your last real conversation was because of what she said. Jungkook shakes his head no upon your confusion, and before you can speak, he’s quick to reassure you.
And oh how he’s always quick to reassure you.
“What she said holds no weight. You’re in my life. In Lia’s life,” he glances over at her for effect, her doe eyes wide as she stares up at the two of you, trying her absolute best to understand your adult conversation.
“You’re family now,” he continues. “No matter what power Nessa thinks she holds, she can’t separate family. My family.”
And like tradition, your eyes well up and you try your absolute best to not let them drip but with one look at Jungkook and Lia, your family, staring at you— you pout as the tears fall harshly.
Dahlia is quick to pout too, more confused than sad. It’s almost as if Jungkook expected this reaction from you, so quickly bending down and scooping up Dahlia with one arm and holding her against his hip, he leans her towards you.
“Lia, tell Y/N not to cry. Tell her you love her too much to see her cry.”
And the following words that were spoken by her feather-like voice made your heart ache in a way you’d never felt before.
“Don’t cry Y/N,” she extends her tiny hand, sloppily wiping away the many tears falling down your cheek. “I lub you.”
Jungkook’s smile is big, bunny teeth out and all as he’s almost as happy as you are to hear that from Dahlia. And somewhere within him, he feels his heart go warm at the fact his life just might be perfect thanks to his two girls.
“I lub you too,” you giggle, mocking her pronunciation.
And with one exaggerated sigh, you bring your hands to your face and wipe away your tears in one go, smiling big as you look at Jungkook again.
He can’t help but giggle at your reddened nose, finding you absolutely adorable.
“You don’t wanna be late,” you remind.
Jungkook groans as he places Dahlia down, earning a swift slap on the bicep as Dahlia tells him “hey! I’m not heavy!”
Giggling, he comes back up and occupies his hands on your waist, Lia far gone as she goes to figure out how to get to the princess movies on the TV.
“Did you hear what I said?” He asks, soft.
You flutter your eyes shut, leaning your forehead into his chest and taking in the scent of him. You feel comfortable, and like magic, the unwelcome tension that’s been between you two slips away as if it was never even there.
You hum your yes, his hands finding their way to your back.
“It should be illegal how happy you make me,” you murmur, face still tucked away against his chest.
His laughter rumbles beneath you and when pulling away, he’s quick to join your lips in yet another kiss. This one lasts longer as you let it happen, taking in the feeling of the literal and metaphorical warmth his lips hold.
Humming as he draws back, he pecks the top of your head before grabbing his things off the table beside you.
“I’ll be back by lunch, in case of emergency Lia’s spare car seat is in the garage, and if you need anything at all just call me.”
“Will do.”
“Also, you don’t have to play with her if you don’t want to. I highly recommend a couple of nap times, yourself included. Oh, and she’s definitely going to ask you to play the same movie over and over so when the time comes just tell her no and she’ll get over it eventually. If she gets hungry, there are some microwavable meals in the pantry that you can heat up. She loves pasta so if you can find stuff in the pantry for that then that'd be great. I’m limited on groceries but I can leave you money if you want to order someth—”
“Relax, baby. I’ve got this.”
Jungkook smiles, free hand coming up to hold your jaw.
“I know you do.” He softly speaks as his eyes scan your lips. “I’ll be back in a couple of hours, k?”
“K.”
And with one last short but sweet kiss, he turns to the living room and calls out his goodbyes to Dahlia who is way too absorbed in her princess movie to care.
Watching him as he walks out to his car, you manage to mouth one last thing as he sits inside. You’re aware he can’t see you, but that doesn’t stop you from saying it anyway.
“I love you.”

“What? No way, Sleeping Beauty is the best princess.”
Utter offense washes over the girl's features, eyebrows furrowed as she tries so hard to persuade you to her opinion.
“No! Sleeping Beauty just went sleeping for a long time, but Cinderella has fairy magic and a more pretty dress.”
Smiling at her many grammatical errors, you sigh and throw your head back as you let her win.
“Fine... Cinderella is the best.”
Turning to face her, you see her big bunny smile accompanied by her almost-evil victory squeal.
“Time to play now,” she suddenly jolts up and off of her tiny bean bag, scrambling over to her pile of toys.
Her energy baffles you, and you almost contemplate Jungkook’s nap advice.
A sudden shriek-like gasp makes your heart still for a moment, and with panicked eyes, you spot Dahlia holding a square pallet of some sort. Relieved to find out that was excitement and not pain, you discreetly take in a deep breath.
You love her, but oh how these hours are going to be long.
“My makeups!” She excitedly exclaims, already making her way back over to you.
Presenting you the big glittery pallet of goopy gloss-like makeup, you hesitantly accept it as you don’t know what she wants you to do with it.
“Pretty,” you tell her through a smile, handing it back seconds later. She gives it right back, though, eyes hopeful as she asks her next question.
“Can you put it on me like yours?”
You don’t even try to explain the difference between the makeup you use and this one that’s clearly from Claire’s. instead, you try to think of an answer.
“I don’t think your daddy would like that very much.”
Her brows crease, lips pout, but before she can express her unhappiness with your answer— your phone chimes in your pocket.
Retrieving it quickly, you smile as you tell Dahlia, “There he is now, I’ll ask him. Okay?”
Reluctantly she nods, scurrying over and making herself busy with her other toys while you text Jungkook.
loml❤️: Everything okay? Did she wear you out yet?
Your smile is inevitable and you find yourself getting warm again as you text him back.
You: almost lol
You: she’s begging me to do her makeup, would that be okay?
loml❤️: Go ahead, I don’t mind. Just don’t make her look 20… 😤
You: lol dw, we’re sticking with her plastic makeup kit
loml❤️: Haha cute, send pictures when you’re done :)
loml❤️: Also, what’s dw?
Unable to resist your laughter, you fondly shake your head as you type out a reply.
You: will do 💗
You: dw = don’t worry
loml❤️: Ahh, got it.
You: get back to work mr. jeon, we’ll see u soon
And with another irresistible smile, you instinctively start to type your final words until reality catches up to you and you stop yourself. You wonder if it’s too soon to just casually throw that word around. Sure, it’s been said before, but that situation was the complete opposite of casual. In a way, casually saying it holds more meaning. It’s way more domestic.
Nevertheless, you decide to just click your phone off, settling on the plan to let him be the one to casually say I love you first.
Attending back to the child who’s now staring up at you with wide, hopeful eyes, you playfully narrow your eyes as she awaits that answer.
“Ready to get glammed out?”

It’s around three in the afternoon when you begin plating lunch and that notorious impala pulls into the driveway. You didn’t mean to check the first reflection you could spot, frantically scanning yourself for any indecency to correct before he sees you.
And who knows? Maybe that giddy feeling in your stomach upon seeing him won’t ever fade away.
Dahlia is far too focused on her movie that’s playing on the large tv mounted in the living room to even notice that you made her favorite pasta and even more her favorite person approaching the front door.
Swaying her little legs on the high chair of the dining table, she halts her swig of banana milk when she hears a distant turn of a handle. And just like that, her milk-covered lips shift into the biggest smile and with quite a struggle she manages to climb her way off the chair and collapse herself into the legs of Jungkook.
“Hey baby,” he laughs as he places a hand to her head. “Careful, I don’t wanna ruin that pretty makeup.”
Pouring the last of the pasta onto the third plate, you smile at the girl’s excitement as you make your way to the sink. Putting the pan down, you begin to search the area for all the necessary dishwashing equipment. It’s not until you bend down to check the cabinet beneath the sink that you feel a warm hand creep onto the small of your back.
“Hi, other baby.”
His words are enough to make your stomach do that warm swirly thing that you can’t quite distinguish between fondness or horniness. But given the time and place, you settle with the first and straighten up to place an appropriate PG kiss on his jaw.
“Hi.” You stare for a moment, not quite ready to break away from that gleam in his eyes. “How was the lecture?”
He places his bag on the counter before reaching over to shut off the running faucet, implying for you to not carry on with doing the dishes to which you roll your eyes at before he’s quickly returning a kiss to your lips.
“Nothing too crazy. It was a freshman class so hardly anyone actually understood my material and now I have over thirty frustrated students who I can assume don’t like me. Other than that it was okay.”
You giggle at his predicament, taking his wrist as you drag him over to the table. At the end stands a doe-eyed Dahlia who’s waiting to be lifted back onto her chair, banana milk back in hand as she tiptoes to see the tv.
“That’s okay, we like you.” You say to playfully ease him, earning a soft grin.
Instinctively he goes to help Dahlia up, placing her on the seat and tucking her into the table. He scans her for a moment to make sure she’s stable and won’t fall, and when all is well his eyes venture to the plates of food before him.
“She can cook too? How’d I get so lucky?”
You can’t help but blush at his compliment and even more so at his impaction that you’re his, and you take your seat across from him and beside Dahlia.
“I remember a certain someone saying Dahlia loves pasta so I made her a small bowl of alfredo and in honor of her I made us a pinot grigio-based white sauce pasta.”
“It looks really good, thank you,” he smiles at you. Following his league, another “thank you” is spoken and you and Jungkook smile at the girl’s polite mannerisms.
They both dig in, pretty quiet as their full attention is on devouring their plate. You hold back a giggle as you realize Dahlia is just as much of a foodie as her daddy is. She truly is a mini-Jungkook.
“I should’ve waited to cook until you got here, I could’ve given you some cooking pointers.” You tell Jungkook as you fork a bite for yourself.
“I can cook. . . to some degree.”
“No you can’t,” replies Dahlia, tone genuine and carefree as she calls him out so casually. You shake your head at him as you laugh, only cracking up further when his face washes over in embarrassment.
“Fine, not everyone can be a three-star michelin like you. But I do make a mean pb and j.”
Dahlia cutely nods in agreement to that one, both hands picking up her almost empty cup of banana milk.
“Plus why would I learn when you can just be the cook of the house.”
You smile at his suggestion.
“What if when the cook isn’t at said home? I’m hardly here,” you laugh off, not at all hurt by the reality of it because it’s only the truth. You still have your own apartment, keep in mind.
“What if she can be?”
You halt your forkful, lowering it back down to the plate upon his words. You’re not not aware of what that may imply, but you’re also too scared to assume that you’re right. Frozen, you wait for him to continue.
“What if you are here more?”
“Jungkook, are you asking me to—”
“Shh, don’t think too much about it.” His tone grows a bit quieter as an attempt to not let Dahlia into the adult conversation. “It’s just an offer. It doesn’t have to be this week or even this month. Just think on it. I know graduation is around the corner and I’m not quite ready to stop seeing you every day.”
And before you can respond, though it’s not like you were going to, Jungkook shifts his attention back to the table as a whole, poking Dahlia’s pouty cheek as he asks “so what’d you guys do today?”
Dahlia sits up straighter, ready to tell her dad all about the day you two had. Smiling like an idiot, you give her your full attention as you wait for her to enlighten him.
“We watched movies, played with my plushies, watched another movie—“
“The same movie,” you interrupted. “Almost three times.”
Jungkook lets out an eye-crinkling laugh followed by an “I tried to warn you.”
It’s while you’re still laughing with him that Dahlia perks up in her seat, suddenly remembering something else.
“Oh! And we read a lot of books! She taught me what l-o-v-e spells.” You smile at her enthusiasm and also at her memory of what you taught her.
“Yeah?” Jungkook asks, amused. “I think she taught me what love means too.”
And there goes that whirly thing in your stomach again. This time, though, it’s unmistakable. It’s warm and you only feel it when he says cute domestic and dorky things like that.
You love him. It’s love that you keep feeling time after time with him.
You hold yourself together for the sake of Dahlia as well as yourself, wanting so badly to pout at that but instead you settle with making fun of him.
“That may be the corniest thing you’ve ever said before.”
Jungkook’s head goes back as he laughs, embarrassed but still not double-downing.
“I love you too. Both of you.” You say, no feeling of nervousness this time. It feels natural. Maybe because it is natural. This is natural.
And you’ve never been so damn happy with natural.
“What’s a corny?” Dahlia suddenly asks once the laughter dies down which only makes it start back up again.
“Your daddy. He’s a corny.”
“Both of you finish your food,” he playfully scolds, shaking his head as he glances at you with that same gleam from earlier.
It’s in that moment that you realize just like the warm whirl of love you get in your stomach, he too feels it. Except his love is displayed in the form of a gleam in his eyes.
A gleam you’ve seen from the start.

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay the night?” Jungkook asks against the top of your head.
“I mean it’s still pretty early, if it’s not too late when I’m done running errands I can come back here.”
Nuzzled into his chest on the couch, you’re watching the same damn movie for the forth time today. Neither you or Jungkook have the heart to tell Dahlia no to her favorite movie, though, so you’re kind of stuck with it.
“Where you going anyway? Jungkook asks, hand continuing its previous stroke on your thigh now that Dahlia is half asleep.
“The mall. I still need to get my dress for the Graduation ceremony next week. I’ve been procrastinating.”
“Shit, I completely forgot about that.”
“Are you attending?” you ask, sitting up a bit to give him access to your ass. Like instinct, his hand finds its way there in nanoseconds and he’s gently feeling you out as he responds.
“I have to. Most of the professors do.”
You let out a hum as you continue to look at the screen of bright pastels, trying to decipher if the movie takes place underwater or in some fairy forest. Even after four watches, you still can’t tell.
“Are you bringing sleeping beauty over there?”
“She’s my plus one. I haven’t gotten her anything nice to wear either now that I think of it.”
And out of absolutely nowhere, the still figure that you were convinced was asleep darts up and nearly sends you and Jungkook both into cardiac arrest.
“Appa I want to go dress shopping with Y/N!”
“Jesus Christ,” he whispers under his breath as he moves his hand off your ass and to your shoulder instead. “I thought you were sleeping you little faker,” he tells her as he pokes her side, earning a mischievous giggle.
“Can we?” She pushes, determined to get a yes.
“Baby it’s already six, your bedtime is in two hours. Plus you shouldn’t invite yourself, I’m sure Y/N wants some alone time.”
Wrong.
“I don’t mind at all. If anything it’d be nice to have a helper with me.” You move your lips to his ear, whispering as quietly as humanly possible, “plus if we get back late she’ll be sound asleep in seconds and I’ll be able to help you out tonight.”
Jungkook lets out a low and discreet giggle but doesn’t let himself think too much of it. However, it’s enough for him to rethink his decision.
“Fine. But we’re not buying any toys, Lia, okay?”
She pouts but doesn’t object.
“We’re only gonna buy one dress for Y/N’s special event. Deal?”
“Deal,” the girl mumbles, not entirely happy that we won’t be stopping at her favorite toy store.
“Go put on bye-bye clothes. We’ll leave in ten minutes.”
That’s all the girl needs to hear before she’s racing up the stairs and you and Jungkook yell out “don’t run” in sync.
Given the brief moment of alone time you have, you waste no time throwing one leg over him and straddling him against the backrest of the couch. Both his hands find your ass again, squeezing harshly as he giggles against your lips.
“You sure you want me to go? You’re not sick of me yet?”
You shut him up by capturing his bottom lip between your teeth, biting down until he winces beneath you. You relieve your destruction with a gentle kiss.
“Does it look like I’m sick of you?”
“Yeah. Prove it some more.”
You roll your eyes at his needy banter, swiping your thumb over his lip. You catch eye contact mid-act, and you can’t help but smile the widest when you see his gleam appear.
“What?” He asks, a smile of his own growing.
“Nothing,” you lie.
He narrows his eyes in a cute and determined need-to-know manner.
“I love you,” you give in.
His playful expressions soften and when he looks you dead in the eye with that gleam you swear you can hear every single thought in his head. The reflection of yourself in his pupils only confirms it.
He’s thinking of you. Just you.
“I love you.” He repeats. And there’s something about the way he doesn’t add “too” that makes it even more special.
He’s not just agreeing. He’s telling you.
“I’m dooone~” a bouncy voice shouts from the stairs. You have just enough time to remove yourself from his lap but he twists to capture your lips in his.
You swat at his chest as you hear Dahlia’s steps reclining further and further down the steps, but by the time he’s pulling away you want more and you have just the right amount of seconds to peck his lips before Dahlia is in sight.
“Ready?” He asks, sort of out of it. You smile.
“Yes!” She exclaims as she helps herself out of the front door.
Jungkook is quick to stand up, grabbing his keys from his bag on the counter before following her out the door. You trail behind him, even when he opens the back door for Dahlia and buckles her into her car seat.
Once he shuts the door, you turn to him with a question.
“You don’t think we’ll run into you-know-who at the mall, do you?”
Jungkook sighs. Not in a frustrated way, though. More of an it’s-cute-that-you’re-worried-but-don’t-worry kind of way.
“You’re overthinking again. I highly doubt that we will. Plus so what if we do? I already told you, don’t worry about her. She’s not important.”
You nod, still not entirely ridded of your worry.
“What is it?”
“Just imagine if she runs into me having quality family time with her family. That’d be so bad.”
Jungkook steps closer.
“You’re more our family than she ever was. At least you make time for Lia, that’s something Nessa doesn’t ever do much of.”
Your heart breaks upon hearing that. Day after day you only discover more cruel traits of her, and this one really pains you. A bright, kind girl like Dahlia does not deserve a mom like that.
You’ve never considered it to be your place, but now you have no problem fulfilling that role for her. Every girl needs a mom, or at least something equivalent to one.
You’re glad Dahlia has you, and you’re sure as hell not going anywhere now.
“C’mon, the sooner we get back the sooner I can get that special help of yours.”
Snapping out of your head and registering what he just said, you swat at his chest as you giggle on the way to the passenger side door.
“I better be getting some special help later too,” you tease before you both get in.
“Oh you will. . .”

“Just one, Lia, then we’re going home.”
Three bags and almost four toy stores later, Jungkook follows behind you and Dahlia with bags to his elbows as she picks out a plushy.
He couldn’t resist her puppy eyes when she asked to buy at least one barbie and one plushy, and you were no help at all when you mentioned the new plushy store that opened up at the mall recently. That leads you to now, helping her reach a little sushi plushy on a high shelf. It’s a tuna roll with a cute little smile on it and you gasp like a little kid when you discover the even cuter nigiri plushy behind it.
“Lia look!” You show her, enticing a gasp of her own. “Another one! Isn’t it cute?”
“Appa, can we get both? Please~”
You immediately turn to face Jungkook who’s already squinting his eyes at you, and you can’t help but giggle as you mouth “sorry” with a guilty expression.
“Fine. Just those two, nothing else.”
Dahlia squeals in excitement, skipping over to the cash register with her little tuna roll plushy tucked in her arm. You and Jungkook follow behind, the little nigiri plushy in yours.
Holding it out for Jungkook to see, you decide to push his nerves further.
“You gotta admit, they are pretty adorable.”
“How old are you again?”
Hitting his bicep, you both quietly giggle as he greets the cashier and pulls out his card— the same card that he used to pay for your dress earlier.
Another event you keep thinking about. The dress was nice. Too nice for him to just casually pay for it.
Just like how his offer to move in was nice. Too fucking nice to be true.
What you didn’t want to do was go down this path of overthinking over something good. It’s good that Jungkook is considering your relationship as something serious. Great, even.
But what’s not good is that you’re a bit panicked about it.
You’re just not used to this kind of treatment. You’re not used to this kind of loyalty. And all of it is just so good that you’ve grown to question if you deserve it.
Because why the hell would the universe be so good to you all of a sudden?
You won’t go on to tell yourself that it’s too good to be true, though. You know it’s true. What you two have is nothing but true. But you will question how you scored something so special.
All you can do is adjust to it and enjoy it because again, you’re not going anywhere. And neither is he.

So Jungkook was wrong.
Although it was your bright idea to hit one last clothing store before you left. You thought it’d be a good idea to buy some clothes to keep at Jungkook’s place until you make your final decision to move in. Now, an aisle away stands the one person you hoped you wouldn’t run into.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive. That’s literally her.”
“Fuck, okay just don't make too much of a big deal out of it. If we walk fast enough we can pass her by without Dahlia noticing her.”
You and Jungkook exchange each word in a whisper, and Jungkook tugs Dahlia’s hand that’s in his towards the exit.
But it all goes to shit when you drop your phone and Dahlia turns around to pick it up for you, seeing her mother passing by the end cap as she looks up.
“Mommy!” Dahlia shouts, earning the attention of the caught-off-guard woman. She holds a look of what one would label guilt, but the second she sees you it shifts into something of vile satisfaction.
“Lia baby, let’s g—”
“Hi Dally,” the woman says as she bends down to reach her level, pulling her in for a hug. She looks up at Jungkook, who was rudely interrupted.
“Hey Gukkie.”
“It’s Jungkook, and we were just leav—“
“And you must be Nessa,” you stand your ground.
She might treat Jungkook like shit and get in his head when they’re alone, but you won’t allow it to happen now. Especially not in front of you or Dahlia.
“I am,” she says, tone sharp and gaze even sharper. She stands up, completely disregarding her daughter who’s clearly excited to see her.
You scoff at that.
When Nessa walks closer to you, Jungkook places his hand on the small of your back— prepared to separate a potential fight.
“I’ve heard so much about you,” you fake a polite tone for sarcastic effect. “None of which is really good.” You tilt your head in pity.
“I’m sure he’s told you many things before. He’s always had a way with words.” She smiles at him through her next words. “It just kinda sucks when you learn none of his words are true.”
“Nessa, don’t start this.” Jungkook sighs, not in the mood to deal with her accusing antics. “Y/N, come on, let’s just go home.”
Dahlia stands beside you, too young to understand what tension is and why it’s surrounding you and her mom.
“You put that makeup on her?” Nessa asks you after noticing the subtle tint to her daughter’s eyelids and the glitter on her lips.
“I felt bad after knowing her mommy doesn’t do stuff like that with her.”
Nessa takes a step forward and Jungkook is already putting himself in between you two.
“Gukkie, come on. You know I wouldn’t hurt a child.” The woman laughs. “How old are you anyway? You look a bit young for Gukkie. Let me guess, daddy issues?”
“Nessa what the fuck?” Jungkook blurts out, too bothered to remember to watch his language in front of Dahlia.
“It’s okay,” you say with your eyes dead on hers. “Lia, say bye to mommy— your other mommy,” you say proudly, not at all intimidated by the look her features shift into.
Even Jungkook stands there with his mouth slightly agape, not knowing what to say as Dahlia follows your instructions and gives Nessa a quick side hug before taking hold of Jungkook’s hand.
And before you turn around to leave, Nessa leans in closer to whisper one last thing in your ear.
“If you think playing house with my family is fun just wait til' all the cards unfold. Then you’ll see the truth. You’ll see that—“
“Babe are you almost ready?” A male voice suddenly approaches from the end of the aisle.
Each head turns to face him, and you and Jungkook watch as the man grabs hold of Nessa’s waist in a loving manner. Her eyes go wide as she twists to look at the man whose words were addressed to her, then straight to Jungkook.
The look on her face is enough to confirm exactly what you both are thinking, and with one look at Jungkook, you grin at the satisfaction of the situation while Jungkook holds an expression of amusement.
Your eyes land sharply on Nessa’s as you utter your final words.
“What a fucking hypocrite.”
