Damn, thank you. I feel like a good chunk of the fandom sorta misses the point of Osomatsu’s struggles in favor of villainizing him or making him the punchline (literally) in the Karamatsu hates his older brother narrative.

Osomatsu is not a completely trash older brother. At key moments of the series, he’s one of the most supportive (he straight up tells Karamatsu to change for no one and to continue being his painful self; he gets Choromatsu to appreciate the Mountain View instead of panicking the whole trip; he can read Ichimatsu like a book, gets away with petting him, and tried to encourage him to speak his mind when ESP kitty was lost; and tells Jyushimatsu to run after the train and Homura).

Osomatsu is definitely repressed (as you wrote). He doesn’t cry. I’m not doing a content analysis sorta count (yet) but it’s worth noticing that all the brother’s major emotional episodes feature them crying to some degree (Kara tries to not cry but eventually sobs during the pear incident, Ichi cries off screen during the ESP kitty bit, Jyushi cries for Homura, Choro cries after moving, and Totty sheds genuine fear tears at having to use the bathroom alone for the 1st time. Oso? Nothing. Even when he’s alone. Nothing but a dead stare.

I should stop but I’ll admit to an Osomatsu bias before I go — simply because such disclosure is important to accurate consumption of what I say — but Osomatsu and Totty and Choromatsu have so much more going on than what this fandom wants to acknowledge and I am normal about it.

Sorry, for the clutter. You don’t have to listen or read. I just needed to say. Have a lovely day, and, thank you, for your thoughts.

Ok so this is going to be another analyze about Osomatsu (because yes and because I have it in mind and I need to write it down before I forget)

I'll talk about Osomatsu's relationship with crying and sad moments in general, long post after cut

(Oh and- at some point I got lost so none of this probably makes sense- read at your own risk)

I think by this point everyone knows that Osomatsu is a somewhat a complicated person- and if you can please try to remember a time when you saw him crying... hard right? I know-

Off the top of my head I remember three times he cried (maybe I'll remember more later), two of those times were with a comedy proposal so they won't count here, and the last one was a time when he was really sad (was panicked better saying-)

So I have a vision of Osomatsu that I'd like to share (even though I'm not sure if it's 100% right) ok so- He never cries, it's hard to find a moment where he cries for whatever reason, and like- not like Jyushi, Jyushimatsu also has few crying moments, but that's because he is almost never shown being sad, but when these sad moments occur he allow himself to be sad and cry, and I know that there are people who are simply less cry than others and I strongly believe that Osomatsu and Jyushimatsu are two of those cases, but still, they remain human and still cry, but Osomatsu seems to refuse to do that sometimes-

I'll take as an example a situation where he appeared (or in this case really) to be sad which is ep 24 S1. We know that whole situation shook Oso, and as a gift they didn't show his face almost once, he has his back turned the whole time making it difficult to see his full face, only from the nose down was visible and since eyes are a very expressive part of our body we ended up missing a lot of his real emotions, but I'm sure he didn't cried there (he doesn't cry normally, in front of others so it's a complete no for him) but what about when he was off screen? I'm sure he shed a few tears at those times, or worse- had a panic attack (as he's shown himself to be prone to having them), the point is- he looks like he doesn't want to cry, he seems to have a little trouble expressing that kind of emotion and crying must be something he represses.

Osomatsu is the type of person who will laugh at a bad situation and make fun of his problems, but deep down he is agonizing over them. He doesn't want to cry. But why? Perhaps to be an example of a strong older brother? Or because it doesn't suit his character? Oso has already shown that he has problems with his identity, and if he tries so hard to remain in the comfort zone and with the personality he always had, crying is not something that suits the little troublemaker, the older brother, the leader. Not being ok is a horrible situation for him, he doesn't want to feel bad and doesn't know how to react to this type of situation, so he just "stops working" and stands there with its blank face, he won't cry even if sometimes he wants to.

Crying is good and it's a way to let out everything you've been holding back, and Osomatsu has been holding back a lot over these three seasons (+ the movie), after he had a panic attack at the beginning of S3 I think it's an indication that something is not right (I assume crying in a panic attack is normal, so yeah-) I don't think there's a confirmed reason why this happened to him but we can speculate on some things (which I won't do in this post), but anyway he needs help ASAP

I think that's it. I missed this post several times so it sucked to write it all down and at some point (at the beginning) I got lost so if you got something wow congrats (seriously- congrats because even I didn't get it) if anyone wants to add feel free to reblog this thing

Banging job, chief.

I never put together that Osomatsu’s big announcement was to leave home!

I’m LITERALLY IN AWE!

I need to go watch out for all the clues when I eventually get to rewatching the season 2 finale.

Osomatsu had even more character growth than I initially anticipated!!!

Thank you, for the time and effort you put into this analysis!

Learning from the perspectives of others, whether affirming or opposing, is the one of the best things I could hope for!!! It always opens my eyes to something greater than what I could’ve conjured on my own!

I should go find your other analysis now! Thank you, again!!!!

I could write essays on Osomatsu’s internal battle with his identity and place in the world and how he’s slowly accepting change into his life but it’s late so I will only talk specifically about season 2’s ending.

Because nothing gets me more then the fact that Osomatsu is seen actually questioning his place in the world, and since he’s always leaned on his family to define him when he’s on his own he has no idea who he is. We see this inner struggle accumulate in a strong dissociation episode and a talk with Totoko where he honest reveals that he has no idea who he is.

And we know from the magazine left on the counter that Osomatsu was at least looking into his own place to live. I don’t think it’s a coincidence either that the very next day after his talk he calls a brother meeting to discuss his possible independence. What that tells us is that Osomatsu is actually acknowledging a problem, his problem, and making strides to correct it. He doesn’t know who he is without his family so what does he do? Take time away, figure himself out.

Then they die and that puts a wrench in the whole plan, but the thing that Interests me is the fact that Osomatsu admits that he remembers what his big announcement is but straight up doesn’t bring it up again because he says it’s ‘not important’. We know from season 3 that Osomatsu never moves out, nor does it look like he plans on it.

I think the whole dying and coming back to life thing kind of shot his confidence in his decision, and especially with his brothers dying and his parents grieving. I think he made the excuse of needing to be home before making any of those kinds of decisions. Eventually he made enough excuses where he didn’t feel the need to leave anymore.

After all, his brothers are now jobless and back at home where they started, their parents wanted them to be together, and Osomatsu wasn’t expected to do a damn thing.

And if you look at the story, and I mean like tilt it on it’s side and look up into it, you’ll notice that none of the brothers really know how they became neets. They have different stories and theories, but none of them really know the specific point that made them this way. I think what Osomatsu did, make excuses to stay home until he got too comfortable, was exactly what happened.

It’s just interesting to see how in the first season Osomatsu is digging his heels in and refusing change, and though we see minor changes to his character in season 2, while he’s reluctant to change, we see how he ultimately can change on the surface level. Getting a job, and keeping a job for one thing. When it comes to bigger changes like moving out, he’s willing even if he’s reluctant.

I definitely like seeing these kinds of developments for these characters, the ones that are so far on the end of one spectrum dipping their toes on the other side and wondering what it’s like.

Anyway that’s it for my midnight rambles, take this screenshot that always makes me laugh as a treat for making it this far

Worlds Best Worst Couple. Lemao. Theyre So Perfect For Each Other In The Most High Blood Pressure Kinda

Worlds best worst couple. Le’mao. They’re so perfect for each other in the most high blood pressure kinda way.

It’s extra funny when you think of it like a shitty reality tv show where after filming Jyushimatsu and Homura being inhumanely cute it’s these 2 disaster moms and their definitely future MMA fighter champion daughter. That baby’s gonna be RIPPED.

Real talk, though. Think the roles should be swapped but it turned out too cute to not share.

Totoko’s definitely saying, “Let go, ugly!” or something like that.

Also, yes, changed Totoko’s fit. HOW IS THE FISH BABE NOT WEARING FISHNETS??!??
