We need more ace representation, and Yelena is a great character, and Marvel has a chance to do this with her character.

Teacup, we are going to need an opinion piece about Yelena and Asexuality directed at Marvel Studios, otherwise we may very well end up with another Riverdale Jugheading situation on our hands. Would you think you could write one? Someone needs to.

Yelena Belova, Asexual Representation, and the MCU

Yelena Belova, portrayed by Florence Pugh in the MCU, is a character that captured audience adoration from the start. What many casual viewers might not know, though, is that in the comics, Yelena is asexual. While this is known to a number of dedicated LGBTQIA+ fans, it's not enough, it's not real representation yet. Asexuals and Aromantics are among the most forgotten groups of the LGBTQIA+ acronym. In movies and TV, they are often shown as some sort of super-genius who doesn't care about relationships, or sometimes a loveless, maniacal villain. Yelena is far different from that, she is a complex, witty, and fun character that wouldn't fall into that harmful trope.

That is, of course, if she is asexual in the MCU. It would be all too easy to put her in a relationship because "Relationships create tension in the story." or "They have so much chemistry together!" without actually considering what that means for our community. Yelena is one of the few asexual characters in Marvel comics, giving her even a short scene or line in a movie or show would honestly mean so much! Representation is important for all queer identities, especially underrepresented ones like asexuality, and with the MCU as mainstream as it is, Yelena may be the only asexual character that many general audiences know.

The cultural impact of the MCU is enormous, and small things can become so important not just to the fanbase, but to the entire community. Consider the impact of the reveal of Loki and Sylvie's bisexuality. The short moment in that scene had such a beautiful impact on the fandom, and that was for a bisexual character, an identity which has become much more common in recent movies and TV shows. It's difficult to even imagine the impact of such an under-represented identity get a few references, or a scene, or just a couple of lighthearted jokes. Young asexual and aromantic people could have a character that they relate to. Long time community members could use the character as an example to say "Hey, we're real, we're just normal people." The character becomes a symbol for the community. Marvel, this is your opportunity with yelena, we can only hope you take it and make it into something great.
