[ 3:15 am ]

you were awoken by the breezing hum of the air conditioning, half of the blanket away from your reach, and an abrupt force to your face. it was the doings of your boyfriend, mark, for the third time this week. you squinted, turning over to find him with widening eyes and messy black hair framing his surprised expression, retracting his hand away from your grimace.

“oh my god, baby i’m so sorry!” he apologized in his somnolent, raspy voice. he sat up and held onto your cheek, clearing a few strands of hair away from your face.

“mark,” you giggled. “you’re always moving in your sleep.”

“i know, i know.” he shakes his head.

“and you were hogging most of the blanket, as usual.” you sigh. breaking away from his gentle touch, you pulled the comforter towards you, and cocooned yourself with it, leaving none for mark.

“hey, that doesn’t mean you get to hog it now, y/n.” he pounced at you, digging his fingers at your sides. you squirmed, begging him to stop as you didn’t have the energy to laugh as hard as you did at a quarter past three in the morning.

“m-mark!” you unwrapped yourself from the blue sheets. “gosh, you are so-”

“annoying,” mark joined you. of course, he knew what you were going to say before you even said it. it was his hobby, to tickle you, to make fun of you, to do everything in his might to just see your adorable reactions. he’s heard you call him annoying many more times than he would like, but he wasn’t complaining.

he fixed the bedsheets, straightened the pillows and tucked the both of you underneath the comforter. you adjusted yourself so that you were laying peacefully on your back, but mark, with eyes as round as a lion cub, massaged your shoulder and whispered, “come here, i’m cold.”

you shifted towards him, head on his chest. you heard his heartbeat, and you felt it pound harder and harder the longer you lay on top of him.

“you still make me nervous.” mark admitted. you had been dating ever since you were both teenagers, and no amount of years spending time with you could ever make him feel bored. “i feel like, my heart is in my head right now. i hear it so vividly.”

“how many times do i have to tell you that there’s nothing to be nervous about?” you smiled up at him. “i hear my heartbeat too. for some reason, whenever i lay here like this for long enough, we sync.”

“really?” mark’s palm rubbed at your back, with the other reaching to hold onto yours. “i wanna try listening for that.” he lifted your hand and, while locked with his, he studied your nails, the shape of the veins that protruded from your skin, and the bones that moved when a finger would twitch. he brought your hand to his shoulder, suggesting that you hold onto him the way he was holding onto you. you silently agreed by digging your cheek deeper into his chest, nose breathing in his scent.

“mark, do you ever think we could,” you hesitated. “do you ever think that this could last forever? like how our hearts sync when we hold each other, and how our fingers mesh like they were puzzle pieces when we hold hands?”

you raised your head to look at mark, eyes half-closed from the drowsiness of the night. his finger trailed your jawline and chin. he brought you down to give him a kiss. “of course,” he whispered in between pecks. “i think about that all the time. i want this to be forever. i wanna grow old with you, y/n.”

he held your head delicately, bringing it down to the crook of his neck, sighing at the relief of the impact.

after a few minutes, mark spoke. “there it is,” he smiled in delight. “i hear your heartbeat, and i feel mine.”

you both slept as if you were on clouds that morning, listening to the synced rhythm of your heartbeats, drunken by the scents of each other, and feeling protected by the light of the approaching sun.
