Okay, I'm not used to using my blog space to rant but this post got me a tiny little bit like LIVE WIRE!

Disclaimer: this is my opinion, nobody's entitled to share it.

It's not ao3feed-jikook's fault at all of course. This blog just happens to automatically transfer all the new "Jeon Jungkook/Park Jimin" pairing works released daily on ao3. I'll take this opportunity to thank them, I've not only kept myself updated on some authors' ( whom I hadn't subscribed to, shame on me) recent activity, but also discovered real fic gems with their help.

But I can’t help thinking that this orphan account’s post is pushing the system too far. Using the knowledge that it's going to appear on a feed, AND our beloved platform ao3, to deliver messages is not right in the first place. It's not the first of the kind I come across, but it doesn't make it any less appropriate.

What makes it even less acceptable to me is the message itself. It's an unspoken topic that's been nagging at me from the back of my brain since I started writing. Here comes the opportunity to address it. I could at least thank you for that, orph.

Where is it written that authors have to tag the dynamics in the M/E-rated fics? So what if we don’t, because indeed I don’t ? Does it make our stories less interesting, less appealing, less worthy of attention? Does it make them bad right from the start, without even giving then the slightest chance?

I don’t tag dynamics because I just don’t feel comfortable with the idea, which sounds disrespectful to me. I don’t blame those who do, mind you. If they’re okay with this, good for them. I don’t pay attention to all the sex tags anyway (especially if they appear by the dozens...) The universe, tropes, plot and settings are enough to attract my attention and decide to give a story a go or not.

But reading the tags on other people’s stories is not the same thing as when you write and tag yours. Just as I remember I enjoyed reading some amazing fics that tackled topics and issues I could NEVER write about myself.

I don’t tag dynamics because gay relationships is not a simple matter of who bottoms or tops, or switches; that’s so shockingly heteronormative. I don’t tag dynamics because gay relationships are relationships, period. With understandings and/or misunderstandings, communication and/or miscommunication, fights and/or reconciliation, gentleness and/or violence, love and/or hatred, rejection and/or respect, and everything in between.

And I want my stories to be read for what they are: stories of relationships that go through all the stages of love and romance - including sex, not as a finality, but as a natural stage, leading to another stage, whether it is complicity, domesticity or conflict, separation. 

I’ve been aware for a while that not tagging the sexual content of my stories may have deprived them of readers (and maybe more than I think) and if I’m being honest, I have to admit I contemplated doing it once. But I didn’t: it felt and still feels wrong. I’d rather they attract readers for other reasons, and they do. Not many at a time, but who cares? Not me.
