Graham finds it on the floor of the TARDIS control room.

Everyone else is asleep, emotionally wrung out from their latest trip, he thinks even the Doctor might have gone off for a nap and he’s never actually seen that happen before now.

But Graham can’t sleep. His mind is still painfully stuck on Grace. On having held her in his arms not even a few hours ago, on having lost her all over again. Logically he knows it wasn’t really Grace. Now that it’s over and he’s looking back he even realizes a part of him knew all along.

It doesn’t make the hurt of it lessen.

And it’s not because the illusion was flawed, if anything it’s because it was too perfect. She looked like Grace, sounded like her, fit in his arms like her. She even smelled like Grace, like Shea butter and vanilla, because all the products Grace liked to buy had those ingredients in them. Everything about her was as warm as he remembers, from her smile to the soft touch of her hand. Even her mischief twinkled like the fire from a candle in her eyes.

It was like a dream come alive, a dream he never would have been willing to wake from if not for Ryan.

He’s so angry at himself for almost having abandoned his grandson for an imitation of the woman who was the love of his life. However flawless of an imitation it was.

He’s pacing from one side of the console to the other, mind lost to self-recriminations, when he feels his foot step on something small, kicking it across the room with a light tinkle.

His eyes follow the small golden object as its slide down the floor stops in the middle of TARDIS, and finally focuses on the last thing he’d have ever expected to find here if he’d ever thought to consider it.

It’s a ring.

part one

Jace blinked his eyes open and was met with a face full of fluffy, brownhair and a heavy weight across his chest. He moved confusedly, his handsfeeling around until he realized that it was a person on top of him.

Suddenly, the events from last night came flooding back to him and he froze.

Simon getting absolutely wasted, and Maia calling Jace to come pick him up.

Simon accidentally telling Jace he was in love with him.

Simon crying.

Jace’s heart clenching every time Simon called him “Jace Herondale.”

Jace remembered everything all at once and then immediately wished hehadn’t. He knew Simon had no real feelings for him, and that anything he hadsaid the night before wasn’t true. Jace nearly laughed at the stupidity of hisown hopes, that maybe, just maybe, Simon loved him back. It was foolish andnaive and Jace couldn’t take this any longer. He needed to leave, get out ofhere, get away from Simon before everything Jace had ever wanted came crashingdown around him when Simon woke up. He soaked up one last, blissful moment inthe life he knew he could never have before beginning to ease his way off ofthe bed.

Jace regretfully untangled their legs, and slowly pulled away so Simon’shead was no longer pillowed on his chest. He ran his hand through Simon’s hairgently, trying to ignore the way his throat began to close. He closed his eyes,trying to burn this moment in his memory forever. He should’ve known it wouldend like this. Jace was never this lucky.

It was when Jace began to lift Simon’s arm off of his chest that Simonsighed, and his eyes fluttered open. He stretched, not seeming to realize thatthere was someone else in the bed with him, and winced.

Jace laid frozen, his hand in midair, and half of his body off of the bed, waitingfor Simon to come to his senses. His heart was racing so fast that he felt likehe was going to pass out. This type of fear was so foreign to him, and the factthat this scrawny, talkative, unknowing vampire was the cause of it, made Jacefurious.

“Woah,” Simon groaned, bringing his hand to his head, but he recoiled whenhe brushed Jace’s arm. Simon instantly stilled, not looking up to see who wasin bed with him. Not wanting to know what mistake he had made.

They both remained absolutely motionless, not even daring to breathe, for atleast 30 seconds before Jace couldn’t take the torturous silence anymore. “Simon?”He whispered, sitting up so he was sitting on the edge of the bed.

Simon still didn’t look up, but Jace’s jaw clenched when he saw Simonflinch. “Jace?” His voice was soft, and barely audible.

“Yeah,” Jace breathed, silently damning the Angel for making him forget hisentire vocabulary every time Simon was in the same room. He felt awkward andlarge and completely unsure of the position of his body and he hated that Simon Lewis did this to him. He was usedto being aware of his entire body, feeling confident while training andfighting, being the most intimidating person in any room. It was like Simon hadunwittingly stripped Jace of his angelic powers and left him…human.
