Part 3- Reader (Y/N) POV

Exhausted didn’t begin to encompass your current state. You had only been conscious for less than two hours, yet you felt as though you had been awake for five days. Your entire body ached from the thaw out of cryo, which you had come to expect each time you were brought back from a frozen state. The tingling of your fingers and toes, and subsequent throbbing pain as your body slowly regained feeling and control was never comfortable. Then again, from the little you could recall, your life hadn’t exactly been filled with pleasantries.

As if your physical state wasn’t enough, your current mental capacity was even more disastrous. Trying to figure out where you were, much less when you were, was no simple task. This time, however, you did have the comfort of not waking up to a Hydra handler. Although you still had no idea what S.H.I.E.L.D. was or who these men were that took you in, you trusted your gut that they were good people, that they would help you. And maybe, somewhere in the distant future, they could help you piece your life back together.

Your ride on the jet to their headquarters was quick, but you relished the warmth and silence of it while it lasted. Once the aircraft landed, the back of the jet opened into a ramp and revealed a large air hangar that was bustling with activity. You watched as people tended to various aircraft, carried crates, worked on engines, or talked amongst themselves.

Sam caught your attention at the bottom of the ramp, guided you through the busy building and into a long hallway. As you turned a corner to enter the corridor, you lost sight of Sergeant Barnes and Dr. Banner, but felt relief wash over you to be away from such a large number of people.

Sam stopped at the end of the empty, gray colored hall, then turned towards his right, facing a glowing monitor.

“FRIDAY, this is Y/F/N Y/L/N. She’s going to be staying with us, but I need you to keep an eye on her alright?” Sam voiced to some unseen person on the other side of the digital panel.

“You got it, Sam,” a lady with an Irish accent sounded from the speaker. “May I get her readings to assist in your surveillance?”

Sam rolled his eyes before he turned to you and flicked his head, signaling you to step closer. “This is FRIDAY, she’s A.I. and keeps track of everybody and everything. For now, we need to keep an eye on you for safety purposes. At least until we get a better understanding of what you are. No hard feelings,” Sam explained. “If you can just stand here facing this monitor for a moment and say hi, then we can be on our way.”

Uncertain of what sorcery Sam was talking about, you stepped forward and faced the panel before you spoke to it. “Hello… FRIDAY,” you greeted.

“Hello Ms. L/N and welcome. Should you need any assistance during your stay here, just call for me and I’ll gladly help you,” the feminine voice offered.

“Thanks, FRIDAY,” Sam said absently into the air. “Okay, let’s get you to a room. If you’re hungry, I’ll have someone come by with some food,” he explained further as you followed him through a door and into what looked like a business office.

Given that it was sometime in the pre-dawn hours, you were surprised to find yet more people milling about. Sam kept a steady pace and ignored the people in business attire as he strode past the cubicles and offices. He led you through another door out of the office space and into an enclosed, glass walkway that was at least 50 feet off the ground. At the other end of the glass tunnel was a medical facility where you were met with the smiling face of a dark haired woman.

“Hi, Sam,” she greeted before she turned her dark brown eyes to you. “You must be Y/N. I’m Dr. Helen Cho. It’s a pleasure meeting you,” she spoke as she offered her hand to you. You shook it softly while offering a small smile. “You’re probably exhausted. I have a room ready for you,” the woman sympathized as she gestured for you to follow her.

She walked past a surgical suite, then turned towards an open door on the left and led you inside. The room was simple, but adequate. It held a twin bed that was pushed against the wall on the right. A window took up most of the wall on the far side of the room. There was a small desk against the wall on the left side of the room adjacent to a door that opened into a bathroom with a shower. Although sterile and almost completely white, you felt comfortably at home.

“There’s some toiletries in the bathroom for you. If you need anything else, just let FRIDAY know,” Dr. Cho assured you. “For now, try to get some rest and we will get to work tomorrow.”

With that, the pair closed the door and left you on your own.

You shuffled over towards your bed and sat down right as a gentle knock sounded at your door.

“Come in,” you croaked while you remained seated.

You looked towards the entryway to see Sergeant Barnes peak around the door before entering the room. Under the bright lights, you could now see his features clearly. He was as intimidating in the light as he was under the darkness, even without a gun pointed at you. His face seemed to be set in a persistent scowl with furrowed brows and a tensely set jaw. He had light stubble that framed his face. His full lips pouted slightly, even when he was at rest. But it was his eyes that were most captivating as they were the most brilliant, piercing blue you had ever seen. In spite of their beauty, you could see darkness shrouded behind them.

“Sam thought you might be hungry and asked me to grab you something to eat. It’s a turkey sandwich,” he told you as he held up the sandwich, then placed it on the desk. “I, uh, also grabbed some scrubs that might fit you a little better,” he offered as he placed those on the desk as well.

“Thank you, Sergeant Barnes,” you nodded. “That’s very kind of you.”

“Bucky,” he corrected.

“What?” you countered as you raised your eyebrows.

“My name. I go by Bucky,” he clarified.

“Thank you, Bucky,” you repeated with a smile.

Looking clearly uneasy of what to do or say next, Bucky excused himself, “Alright, I’m going to go. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

At a loss for words, you simply nodded to him as he walked out the door. You stood up from the bed once the door clicked shut and lumbered to the desk to unwrap your sandwich and eat a few bites.

Once full, you set the remainder of the sandwich back on the desk then picked up the scrubs and changed your pants. With the better fitting bottoms, you would now be able to move around without one hand on the waist band to stop them from falling off. You opted to keep the hoodie sweatshirt from the jet on as it was quite comfortable and warm.

Ready to lay down and sleep, you ambled around the room in search for a light switch. Closer to the door, you noted for the first time there was no door handle on your side. Feeling a tinge of fear at the familiarity of being held captive, you breathed deeply and let the thought go as you sat back on the bed. As a last effort before laying down, you spoke to the air in hopeful anticipation “FRIDAY?”

“Yes, Ms. L/N? How can I assist you?” the woman’s voice sounded through a small panel by the door.

“How do I turn off the lights in here?” You asked.

“I can do that, if you just tell me when,” she informed you.

With that, you scooted yourself up the bed a bit and laid your head down on the pillow.

“FRIDAY, I’m ready for the lights now,” you spoke and a second later the lights went off, leaving you in almost complete darkness.

Yoü and I

Title: Yoü and I

Summary: 1940s AU-ish. Because Bucky and Steve still go to War, but nothing after that is ever the same.

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader; Steve Rogers x Peggy Carter

Rating: language

Word count: 4.1k (it was only supposed to be 1k, we can all now confirm that I am unable to write the elusive drabble)

A/N: I needed a break from TOFWYA, the inspo is running a little low so put this together to try and get those juices flowing again xoxo

Title Inspo: Lady Gaga - Yoü and I (Born This Way)

Quickly sliding into the booth at the bar, you tucked yourself under the heavy weight of Bucky Barnes’ arm, giving him and Steve Rogers who sat opposite a quick hello. “Don’t let him see me,” you begged. “Barnes, the least you could do is help me, for Christ’s sake.”

Bucky, perplexed, looked up and around, attempting to figure out in the dimly lit club whom you were trying to disappear from. “Who’s the dropkick you’re ditchin’?” he adjusted his posture to hide you a little better than he had been when you dashed over and forced yourself into his embrace.

“I’m on the worst date… Of. My. Life,” you hissed, eyes darting around. “Sergeant Boring! I don’t even know why I agreed to go out with him!”

“Is he still here?” Steve quirked an eyebrow.

“I dunno, I’ve been hiding in the ladies for the last 35 minutes. I’m hoping he got the idea and just took off,” you confided as Steve and Bucky chuckled quietly, not overly surprised you ditched your date instead of seeing the night through. “And if not, I figure you guys could sort it out for me if he sees me sitting here now… and what a relief you’re here!”

“The lengths you go to just to get near me, sweetheart,” Bucky teased but added, “Your soldier still here?”

You sighed and sat up, brushing your curls from your eyes and shuffling out of Bucky’s grasp, spying where you were previously sitting. Cocktail table now vacant and a wad of bills sitting unattended were all that adorned it. “He’s gone.”

“You probably broke his poor heart,” Bucky couldn’t resist.

“Wasn’t the first, won’t be the last,” you shrugged, non plussed.

“That sass,” Bucky muttered to himself, shaking his head.

Steve snickered. “You gonna stay at least?”

“Absolutely,” you said, stealing Bucky’s whiskey and taking a deserved sip.

“Anything else of mine you wanna claim tonight?” Bucky wondered.

“This’ll do,” you winked. “So, you got ya orders, huh?” you tried to hide your disappointment, taking Bucky in.

“Yes, ma’am,” he sat up a little straighter in the booth and knuckled his peaked cap before tilting it over his stormy blue eyes, pride etched over his handsome features. “Ship out in the morning.”

“In the morning?! Bucky Barnes, if I didn’t come in here tonight, were you even going to tell me, or would I have to have found out from Steve or Becca when you no-showed to church on Sunday morning?” you hissed.

“What? And miss you getting all riled up over little, old me?” he grinned widely as a waitress passed and Bucky signalled for another round. In truth, he was hoping to ship out and avoid the conversation altogether. He’d cop the lecture when the War had been won.

“I’ve known you too long, I know all your tricks, James Buchanan Barnes,” you replied softly. “I would have been devastated if you left without saying goodbye.”

“Buck got us dates tonight,” Steve rolled his deep blue eyes, you noted his lack of enthusiasm. The fact they were sitting together without beautiful dames on their arms suggested just how well the night had in fact gone for them both. “Priorities, ya know?”

“Of course, Stevie. Priorities,” you huffed, still frowning at Bucky who seemed a little less comfortable than usual under your gaze before he looked away altogether. “I can’t believe you were gonna just leave.”

“You’ve turned me down so many times, sweetheart,” Bucky chuckled. “I couldn’t deal with that rejection the night before I go and take on Hilter. How could I win the War if I’ve got a broken heart for you rejecting my advances yet again?”

“Oh, can it, Bucky,” you rolled your eyes before chewing your lip, biting back the quivers that urged. Steve reached across the table and gripped your palm in his clammy hand, knowing your anger was just a show of how upset you truly were. You figured Steve understood exactly how you felt.

“I’ll still be here, doll,” Steve reassured you. “I’ll take care of you.”

“Thank God for Steve Rogers,” you said decidedly, sliding from the booth and moving in beside Steve, much to Bucky’s detriment as you crossed your arms over your chest. “He’d never let anything happen to me,” you told Bucky pointedly.

“No, I guess he wouldn’t,” Bucky agreed quietly with a shifty smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes as the drinks arrived at the table. They each raised a glass.

“To Sergeant Barnes’ safe and speedy return,” you said, voice shaky before throwing the drink back in one hit. The boys did the same, the toast their only wish.

After dropping Steve at his apartment, you wandered the few extra blocks to your family’s building, Bucky volunteering to go out of his way on his last night in town. It was the absolute least he could do after thinking he could pull a fast one over you.

You stood on the first step and gave Bucky a small smile. “Please come home,” you said softly, flicking the bill of his cap up to see his handsome face, his stony eyes bright but he blushed a little as he nodded slowly and chewed on his lower lip, contemplating your words. Your heart was broken. You’d known the charmer your whole life, a few years younger than Bucky and in classes with his sister, Becca, you’d spent a fair amount of time with the Barneses as you grew up and now he was leaving you.

Your little (exponential) crush had kicked in on Becca’s fetching older brother around your 13th birthday, Bucky, then 16 – star of the school basketball and baseball teams. You were struggling in one of your science courses and Becca dragged Bucky away from nothing in particular to begrudgingly help you with your science homework. You were surprised when Becca confided Bucky was a real nerd in the keenest sense of the word and he’d tutor you if you needed it. He was patient and would happily kill hours encouraging you get your head around what you originally thought you couldn’t. Stupidly assuming he just by on his devilish good looks, athletic prowess and popularity, it astonished you he backed up being a bit of a nerd who enjoyed the universe and numbers.

It was when you turned 17 that it all changed for Bucky. Then nearly 20, a flick had switched and you were exactly what he wanted and simply could not have. Too young and inexperienced, but fresh faced and filling out just right in all the right places, he thought. He’d relentlessly pursued you while he dated the rest of the girls in the city, always claiming you were the one he just couldn’t catch. That was still the case, but you wouldn’t give in until he could promise he was done with that part of his life. You weren’t ready to settle but you weren’t going to take backseat with some hussy either.

“I will,” he promised, gently taking you hands in an intimate show you rarely displayed to each other. “How much do ya think you’ll miss me?”

You scrunched up your face and freed a hand, indicating about an inch on your thumb and index finger. He laughed, dropping his scrutiny.

“Sounds about right.”

“Don’t be too impulsive over there, okay?”

“I won’t. What do you think ya gonna do without me around?”

You hummed in response. “I guess attempt to keep Steve out of trouble…” you couldn’t resist giggling. “Don’t fall over yourself, Sergeant. I’ll keep my idle hands busy somehow.”

“Huh,” he scoffed quietly. “Sweetheart, please… If I ask you a question, will you try not to punch me?”

Your fist was already balled and waiting for his follow up. He did have a face that sometimes deserved the occasional slap when he got a little too cheeky for words but you were struggling. “Can’t do that. You say a lot of stupid things, Barnes.”

He smiled, and loosened your hands to wrap them around his neck, before skimming his hands down your sides to your waist. It was bold and surprising, but you were emotional, on the verge of tears seeing this wonderful boy who grew up into this perfect man and had been resisting throwing your arms around him since you left Steve to beg Bucky to stay.

“Will you wait for me?”

“Wait for you?” you frowned, a little confused.

“Yeah,” he swallowed. Suave, cocksure Bucky Barnes was nervous, you realised. “I – I have no place asking this. But will you be my girl and wait for me? When I get home, I’ll make an honest woman out of you. No more lines and games, just you and me?” he asked quietly.

“And you were going to leave without saying this?” the scepticism in your voice evident.

“I think I was, yeah,” he shyly admitted. “But then you gatecrashed mine and Steve’s night so I had to say something,” he gently teased. “Because you’re so good to me, you keep me on my toes. You’re so beautiful and the sweetest, doll. And you give me more sass than any other woman, including Ma and my sisters combined, that I ever met.”

You giggled quietly, tears breaking free of their confines behind your eyes. “What if someone better comes along though?”

He shook his head. “They won’t.”

Still a step below you, but eye to eye, he raised his lips to yours and crushed your mouth to his, the grip he had on your body as tight as anything as you held each other, flush against the other. Hearing a throat cleared by an unimpressed passed by, you somehow dragged your lips from Bucky’s, his smeared in your red lipstick. You giggled quietly, thumbing away the evidence.

“I’m taking that as a yes.”

You moved up another step and shrugged. “Take it as a maybe.”

“Maybe?” he rubbed his jaw. “Wow. I put myself out there for just a ‘maybe’?” his smile widening. The cheek of this boy. “That kiss did not feel like a ‘maybe’, dollface.”

Taking the distance at once, he was once again before you. “Please come home,” you repeated. “I’ve wanted this for far too long for you not to come back to me, Bucky Barnes.”

“I’ll come back to you. I’ll take Hilter out myself if it means I’m back to you faster,” he whispered, eyes searching yours. “Be mine, sweetheart.”

“I’m yours.”

The letters from Bucky were regular. The night you swore yourselves to each other, he promised at least 1 letter per week. More, if timing permitted and occasionally you did get a few more. The War effort had intensified and Steve, no longer sickly little scrappy Steve and now super soldier Steve (you’d sat through enough Captain America short films to realise little Steve wasn’t fooling anyone with his new alter ego), had found himself in Europe as well. It all happened so quickly, losing your best friends to the war effort. Your head was spinning.

When Bucky’s letters ceased for a while, you were beginning to expect the worst and found yourself spending more time with Becca and her mother, just in case they received a dreaded letter from the War office. Relief washed over you all when Bucky’s familiar scrawl found its way back to the mailbox. Bucky glazed over his time in Italy but to his surprise, found Steve there. A new Steve that Bucky just couldn’t seem to get his head around. You could only imagine Bucky’s reaction. You would have paid to have seen Bucky’s surprise.

Bucky’s letters explained they were now a part of a specialist squad called The Howling Commandos, Steve as their Captain (this perplexed you no end but knew you’d eventually get the whole story), Bucky his second in charge and a few other internationals. The letters continued even if they weren’t the same jovial letters he’d sent before Italy and that was all that mattered to you. The letters meant Bucky was safe and alive.

Until Steve’s letter arrived. It was short, tear-stained and unwelcome to you after the first read.

‘I’m so sorry. I couldn’t save him. I’ll be home as soon as I can.

Captain Steve Rogers.’

Steve’s letters ceased after that too. The Allies had accepted surrender from the Nazis. The War in Europe was over. You’d seen the front page of the newspaper. You knew what had happened to Steve. How could this be your new normal?

The tears were relentless, they caught you in even the most generic of tasks: walking to work, doing the dishes, putting on your make up. The pain in your chest was excruciating and constantly felt like someone was purposefully pushing the air out of your lungs. You don’t know how long you trapped yourself in your bedroom, you couldn’t be coaxed by your parents except for the occasional mealtime and church every once in a while. Days, weeks, it all felt like a continuous agonising spiral of horrible nightmares and memories of you with your men in happier times. Even the happier memories now felt like salt in the wounds.

You’d somehow resumed your job at the telephone company, life seemingly getting back to normal except for the gaping hole in your heart that was threatening to implode every day. You’d eventually agreed to go out with the girls from work one Friday evening to the infamous Stork Club, just so you could try and convince yourself your life hadn’t completely fallen apart. A few drinks, “maybe a nice man to have a slow dance with” was on offer. You scoffed to yourself but agreed, knowing in your heart, no one would ever dance as well as Bucky.

The Stork Club was where you would join Steve, Bucky and a few other friends some Friday nights for drinks and dancing. Bucky always managed to get you on the dancefloor and show you a good time, he never had any formal training but he knew how to move in ways you could only dream of. The thought of being in his arms during a slow dance made you blush.

You couldn’t feign the excitement to be there and excused yourself early, much to the easy acceptance of your girlfriends. “We’re just glad we could get you out a little, darling. It’ll get easier,” they said. “We promise.”

Who were they to know how you were feeling? None of hadn’t lost a lover or a brother. They just didn’t understand and you selfishly wished you could live in the same innocence. You wished you were in their shoes too. How simple it could be.

Off the train and meandering back to your apartment, you sighed, taking the slow way back. What were you rushing back to? Stopping past delis, you spied friends inside that hollered and called for you to join for supper, but you gave a polite smile and skipped off quickly so no one would bother the effort to drag you inside.

Tediously your feet pulled you to the apartment, unlocking the door to the building then meandering up the stairs to the fourth floor. Hearing the quiet music inside and the laughter, you debated even entering (wouldn’t be the first time you’d scaled the fire escape to get back into the building). Your parents were clearly entertaining, a fact they probably told you but like most things said directly to you these days, it was lost on deaf ears.

Reluctantly turning the knob and pushing the heavy door open, you gave a small smile to your parents and their guests, not bothering to take in who was making the racket before scooting directly to the kitchen for a glass of water, the earlier night’s drinks still present in your system.

The joviality from the living room turned to hushed whispers as you stared out the window to the clear Brooklyn evening. Still brightly lit from the Manhattan skyline, you tipped the rest of the glass down the sink –

“I almost die and you don’t even say hello when you see me?”

Your heart had stopped, hearing that arrogant mutter. But your body shook, you were laughing. It seemed so foreign these days. You’d finally fuckin’ lost it. Now you were hearing his voice too. You were officially mad and wondered just how close you were to your parents committing you.

“I almost die and you won’t even turn around?” his amused voice continued.

There’s nothing to say, you told yourself, gripping the sink, fingers tapping persistently as you felt yourself lose control from top to toe. Body shaking, you instantly froze as an arm wrapped itself around your waist, the weight of his chin on your shoulder, his warm, smooth cheek against yours.

“I almost die and you don’t want to even look at me? I promise, I’m still as handsome as I was… just my arm in a sling, sweetheart. But I’ve been told by the nurses that it’s quite charmin’ too.”

His grasp managed to turn you around and you leaned against the bench to avoid your legs from going from under you. Those stony eyes and their mirth, the dimple on this clean-shaven right cheek, that overconfident wide toothy grin. You slammed your weeping eyes closed again, the flooding salt stinging your cheeks.

“God, I missed you,” Bucky pulled you into his reach, pressing a warm kiss to your forehead as his frame still towered over you. “Look how beautiful you are tonight.”

“If I talk, they’ll hear me and I’ll surely be sent to the loony bin,” you replied, head lolling under his gentle touch though you refused to open your eyes. “Don’t.”

“Doll, it’s me,” he said quietly. Meek, even. “Open your eyes and look at me. Please.”

After a sharp inhale, you managed to give into the single request, the tears held back drenching your cheeks, prickling your skin.

“Hi, sweetheart. Where were you tonight? Hope you weren’t waiting for someone better to come along,” Bucky gave you a small smile. He could feel your fear. He could see the disbelief in your eyes. “Been here with your ma and pa for hours. Was about to go out and look for you myself. You weren’t dancin’ with another guy, I hope?”

“You’re not supposed to be here,” you whispered.

“Doc agrees with that assessment. It’s a long story,” he told you, dropping his eyes. “But here I am. Here to make an honest woman outta you. Just like I promised I would.”

You laughed amid the tears, covering your mouth with your hands. It was hilarious, you had officially lost it. You could imagine the men in white coats bursting through the apartment door.

“Can I come in yet?” Steve’s voice called.

“She doesn’t believe it’s me,” Bucky called back over his shoulder, a small chuckle bubbling from his lips. “I’m working harder right now than I ever did before we went to War.”

New and proportionately improved Steve appeared in the doorway and leaned against the frame in his army garb, much like Bucky who was holding you upright at this point. He gave a single wave as your jaw predictably dropped. “Good gracious,” you mumbled as Steve blushed, laughing behind his hand.

“Babydoll,” Bucky whispered, taking your face in one of his palms, forcing your attention onto him again – his right hand, you noted, the warmth – no, the excruciating heat – of his skin bringing you back to him as he wiped some tears away from your blotchy skin. “It’s me. I’m home,” he left a single kiss on your lips. When he noticed your eyes still closed, he didn’t hesitate for another kiss, be damned he was in your father’s house, with you pressed up against him all bets were off.

You fought tooth and nail to push him away, but that kiss was just too familiar. Too raw, too real. Willpower gone, you eagerly kissed back, wrapping your arms around him. With a gasp, he pulled back with a small, satisfied smile. “Thought that might bring you back to me.”

“You’re here,” you told him. You noted Steve shyly looking away, a little embarrassed for you both. “And you. Steve.”

“You can say hi to him if you want, I won’t be offended,” Bucky teased, letting you go as you shook your head and held Bucky tighter. “I know he’s not what you remember. Not what I remember either,” he scoffed as Steve rolled his eyes.

“I’m sorry, Steve,” you apologised, eyes stuck firmly on Bucky. You finally noticed the chicken wing his left arm was in and gently ran a hand over the sling as Bucky nodded his head for Steve to leave. Not much had changed.

“What did he tell you?” Bucky whispered.

“Only that he couldn’t save you. When your mother got the MIA letter, there wasn’t much more to consider, Buck. What happened?”

“Retribution for dragging Stevie onto The Cyclone at Coney Island,” Bucky mumbled, non-committal as usual. He didn’t need you to know the ins and outs of his Wartime experience right now. There would be plenty of time for that later.

You burst out laughing, the memories of you and Bucky dragging Steve and Becca to the boardwalk. They hated the rides that you and Bucky lived for. “What?”

“Honestly?”

“Yes, Bucky.”

“I fell from a speeding loco in the Alps. There is absolutely no way I should have survived. I can’t – “ he paused, lowering his eyes, unable to find the words. “I still can’t explain it. But Stark has some interesting theories.”

“Inventor Howard Stark?” your eyes widened in surprise as Bucky’s brush with celebrity.

“Yeah, sweetheart. Howard Stark.”

“Are you in any pain?”

Bucky shook his head. “No, the sling is merely just to get sympathy from the dames,” he joked as you threatened to punch him on his left side. “Kidding. I’m kiddin’, doll. Been a pin cushion since the fall though, had every test known to man run on me. But the War is over, I’m alive and I’m home.”

You breathed. “Yes, you are.”

“You believe me, right?” he chuckled. “You see me now?”

“It’s you. I see you.”

“You’re not going mad,” he started to break into that silly, smug grin again. “Well, maybe a little since you won’t let me go.”

“I can’t,” you told him. “I won’t.”

“Good, I don’t want you to,” he leaned down to kiss you again. “Come on, you go say hi to Cap and your parents,” he swatted at your bottom as you giggled quietly and nodded, wandering from the kitchen where he allowed himself a minute or two to collect himself as well before following you.

At Coney Island a few weeks later, Steve had introduced you to Peggy Carter. Headstrong, witty and gorgeous, you had clicked with her right away and could listen to that English accent for hours on end. She admitted she didn’t have many girlfriends stateside but now that she would be based in New York City permanently, she’d love to get a drink some time. You were happy for Steve, how he’d gotten everything he ever wanted and needed. You were a little humoured since Peggy was just Bucky’s type, you had to wonder if he had put the moves on her. Regardless of his promises to you before the war, Bucky Barnes had a reputation to protect, after all. You assumed, yes, he had made an unsuccessful pass after Peggy’s innocent ribbing.

Steve and Peggy were now on another train on their way back to the city while you and Bucky headed back to Brooklyn.

You weren’t in a dissimilar situation, you realised as you held Bucky’s hand and snuggled into his left side now he was sans sling, exhausted from a big day. He’d been quiet all day, you hadn’t minded. In fact, you even felt a little guilty spending most of the day with Peggy, leaving the men meander behind and chat amongst themselves.

“You okay, Buck?” you asked him, stealing his attention from his stare out the train window. He gave a half smile and a nod.

“Yeah, sweetheart,” he gave you a small kiss. “You got a little sun today,” he gently pulled your sunglasses from your face and kissed the red tip of your nose.

“Oops,” you made a face, hoping it wasn’t bad enough to peel. “You’ve just been a bit… quiet. Which is strange for you,” you couldn’t resist taunting him.

“Not intentional – just couldn’t get a word in between you and Carter chewing each others ears off,” he grinned widely, putting your concerns at bay with that wicked smile alone.

“Smartass,” you giggled, resting your head back on his shoulder as he pulled you closer.

“I love you,” he whispered, kissing you temple and resumed his gaze out the window again. You looked up and stared at his profile, gently prodding his face back to yours.

“What?”

He blushed a little. “I just said – ”

“I heard you,” you told him. “Say it again.”

“I love you,” he said with a meagre shrug, embarrassed to repeat himself.

“I love you too,” you said, this time able to reply and not recoil in shock as he leaned down and kissed you again with a pleased hum.

“Told ya I was gonna make an honest woman outta you.”

“Huh,” you scoffed, spying your left hand. “Figure I’ve still got some time.”

He nodded with a smirk. “Your days are numbered, sweetheart. Numbered.”

005 Pt.2

Previously

Me and my twin brother 004 were sitting in our cell. We were inseparable since birth, he was older for 5 minutes than me. Our bond was so strong, that Dr.Banner wasn’t able to place us in different rooms.

Sometimes a little girl named 011 was sitting in the opposite cell of us. We were keeping her company. She is sweet, innocent and didn’t know about things these people were trying to do with us. She is like what? 12? We were the oldest here, we were 16. I heard about the girl named 008, maybe she was our age. But I’ve never seen her though. That’s it, there are 4 of us. I were thinking about our tattoos: why 005? Where are the others? What happened to them? Maybe its just random numbers…

I was so into my head, that I didn’t hear my brother were speaking to me.

‘’Hey, what are you thinking about, shortie?’’ I snorted at his nickname for me. I wasn’t even this short. Yeah, he was taller that me and so what?

‘’Nothing, brother. Just random things’’ i let out a sigh, rubbing my wrist with the tattoo.

‘’Hearing the voices again?’’ he asked me, looking concerned.

I glanced at him with a small smile ‘’No, not today. Don’t worry about me’’ always so protective.

‘’Than, what’s in your head, doll?’’ he sit beside me, dropping his arm around me. I leaned on his shoulder with the sigh.

‘’Eh…I was thinking about what’ll happen to us in future’’

He tensed a little and squeeze you closer to him. ‘’I don’t know sis…I don’t know’’

I closed my eyes, listening to his steady heartbeat. His other hand was holding mine. One memory came to my head, I smiled at the thought:  we have our thing, when one of us is sad or nervous, the other is holding their pointer finger in their hand, rubbing the knuckle with the thumb. We have a lot of things like that, but that is my favorite.

When we are alone, we weren’t talking about our powers. I don’t like to talk about it, he too. The comfortable silence dropped between us.

When suddenly the door to our cell was threw open. Two guards came in with Dr.Banner trailing behind them.

We quickly stood up. My brother shielded me with his body, keeping the arm around me protectively.

‘’Well, well, well…my two strongest twins. I hope you rested well’’ That low timbre of Dr.Banner’s voice was always frightening you to the core. My brother’s arm tightened around me. I was looking at Dr.Banner over his shoulder.

‘’There is a special task for you, it takes a lot of….training and preparations’’ He walked closer to us, 004 made a step back, my right hand was clutching his shoulder, other hand his waist. A sly smirk broke out of Banner’s face, watching us.’’I made a decision: one of you will come with me, so you need to decide yourselves who it will be’’

I feel my brother’s body going rigid, he bring me closer to him, before I clutched him even more tighter.

‘’You know the rules’’ Dr.Banner said after a while.’’You’ll come willingly, or…’’ Two of the guards grab longs tasers, turning them on. I flinched by the sounds of electroshocks. My body started trembling with fear.

Then my brother’s voice suddenly distract me from the guards.

‘’I will come, but don’t touch her’’ you hear 004 said. Banner’s face broke out with grin.

‘’W-what are you doing??’’ I whispered in his ear, as his grip on me loosened. He turned around to face me with his hard look on his face.

‘’I know what i am doing, sister’’

‘’Very well, I thinks it all settled’’ Dr.Banner clapped, before made a movement with his hand to the guards.’’Take him’’ The guards came closer to us.

‘’NO, please don’t leave me!’’ I said with despair. The tears filling my eyes.

004 gripped my arms to steady me. ‘’Listen to me’’ he said while looking down at me ‘’Listen, you’re going to be fine, doll, okay?’’ I were furiously shaking my head, tears started falling.

‘’N-no..no, you can’t leave me here alone. W-what if you don’t r-return’’ My hands were shaking uncontrollably.

’’We don’t have choice…’’ He said while his hands came around me. His left hand was holding me to him tightly, his right came to the back of my head, stroking my hair. I was crying so hard, that i couldn’t breath.

‘’Please, munchkin, don’t cry.’’ He slowly pulled away, while his hands came to my face, brushing away tears from my cheeks.

‘’I love you so much, sister. You’re gonna be okay, I’m sure of it.  You are very brave, smart and strong, my little cupcake’’ He grinned down at me, trying to comfort me with his stupid nicknames. I smiled at his attempt.

‘’There is beautiful smile i love so much’’ His came closer ‘’I love you, doll, always have and always will’’ I closed my eyes.

’’I love you too, so much’’ I said with the shaking breath ‘’Always have, and always will’’

His lips lingered on my forehead, slowly inhaling. Then he pulled away from me, while I whimpered.

Dr.Banner was watching out interaction, rolling his eyes. ‘’That was very sweet.’’ he said with sarcastic tone ‘’TAKE HIM! NOW!’’

The guards came closer to my brother.

He was holding my pointer finger with his hand, still trying to calm me.

I was watching how soldiers were taking my brother from me. Our hands disconnect. My heart was breaking in million pieces. Our eyes were locked on each other, until the door clicked close. I collapsed on my knees, rocking myself, my hands came around me for comfort. I cried and cried until my head started to hurt.

Then everything gone black.

005 Pt.3

I haven’t ate, I haven’t slept. It was almost a two month since they took him. Since I heard his voice, feel his comforting touch…heard his heartbeat.

The silent tear slide down my cold cheek. I was lying on my side, looking at stone wall.

What did they do to him? Why haven’t he returned yet?

Without him, the voices in my head became almost unbearable. They were whispering something I couldn’t able to understand. It almost like the whole world is speaking at once.

Since my brother’s disappearance, the voices wouldn’t stop talking.

I can’t take it anymore. It’s too much. I tightly squeezed my eyes, trying to shut them.

“Stop” I said under my breath. “Please…leave me alone” I gripped my head between my arms. They only get louder. The panic rose inside of me.

I sat up quickly with crisscrossed legs, my back to the door. I feel the slight headache; my fingers were trying to sooth it. I was rocking back and forth.

My brother taught me to do breathing exercises for the occasions like that. Inhale, hold the breath and exhale. I did it three times.

The panic disappeared, the headache too. But the voices were still there.

The thought came to my head: maybe I don’t need to fight them?

I relaxed a little, trying to listen.

……they…….he should die……c-cant fight Him…..

I scrunched my brows. What are they talking about?

tt-they couldn’t….stop….Him……He is……already here

Who is here? Are they talking about my brother?

The voices sounded scared.

…..he is here…..HE IS HERE!!!!!....

I gasped at the high-pitched voice, clutching my head with my hands. The pain was unbearable. I feel like my head were breaking in two. I didn’t notice the warm blood was trickling down from my nose. My whimpers can be heard outside my cell.

I didn’t know what to do. I’m here alone, without my brother to calm me, to banish the voices and worries in my head. I cried out in pain.

It is all THEIR fault. They took everything from you: freedom, childhood, name, my brother. They would pay. They. All. Will. PAY.

Then everything was going in slow motion:

I want to scream.

I gasped one more time, feeling my blood boiling inside of me.

Then all my fear, all my anger, all my pain were thrown out of me. The power that I held inside explodes with full force.

And I screamed

The items in my cell were thrown back, the lights flicked and then exploded above me. The whole room trembled.

But then, perfect silence fell. It’s like all came on their place. I didn’t feel any emotions right now. The voices became one and now I can understand what they were saying.

I’m so confused and tired. But before I could do something, I heard a door opened behind me.

‘’Well, well darling. Your powers finally came out.’’

I slowly turned my head to look up at Dr.Banner, my brows furrowed.

‘’W-what?’’ His face broke out with the smile and he chuckled, coming close to me.

‘’My beautiful girl’’ He said while stroking my cheek ‘’you didn’t even know how powerful you are’’ then his face turned blank ‘’and what I’ve done to make you like this’’

What is he talking about? What has he done?

Seeing the confused look on my face, he continued ‘’You will understand later, that it all was for you’’ I saw like the sorrowful look on his face.

And then like it all clicked in my head.

‘’Ww-where is he? Where is 004?’’ I asked him in shaking tone, tears breaming my eyes.

‘’It doesn’t matter now, 005. All it matters is you, and you power, that you finally manage to revive…’’

I feel the anger boiling inside me and I raised into my weak legs, looking right in his eyes.

‘’Where is my brother?” I whispered in low tone. I didn’t notice the looks on guards faces, when my pale face became angrier in instant, my clear blue eyes were shining with slight red color, my lips was in thin line. I was fuming. They stepped back from me.

“WHERE IS HE??” I screamed at the top of my lungs. All of them gripped their ears in pain and fell to their knees.

I didn’t think much and bolted to the door, running through the corridors. The adrenalin was surging through me.

Then all goes red and sirens were started ringing. I flinched because of the loud sound, but keep running. I was out of breath, when I came to the big metal door. It’s like the voices was begging me to open it.

I don’t know what happened, but the next thing I know I was standing face to face with the portal and it was like breathing on it’s own. Like it was calling, luring for me to enter.

I came closer. The voices became soother and more lower, darker. It was fascinating.

My hand reached out to touch it, it was sleek and warm.

But then I heard shouting and steps approaching the metal door.

I was so scared to come back here, to that cell. I didn’t think twice and just enter the black portal.

I fall down on the leaves. I coughed and lifted my head to see where I was. It was so dark around, cold and lonely.

I shivered; eyes weren’t leaving the forest surrounding me.

“Where am I?” I whispered to myself with shaking breath.
