…okay normally I tend to avoid giving the devs credit for smart references by extrapolating their stories’ symbolisms to other more popular (especially western) tropes but like, the allusions to swan lake run are so clever and understand its nuances so well that it’s hard for me not to believe this was somehow intentional on the part of the writers

Swan Lake’s most prominent theme is the reversal of the usual roles of death—subverting the idea of death not as a concept, but for what it accomplishes for its characters. Rothbart, the antagonist, is not allowed to die in the original version of the ballet because he is keeping the curse on Odette. And yeah, everyone who has seen Swan Lake knows that this scene with Black Sugar Swan Cookie and Whipped Cream Cookie is supposed to be a reference to Odile and Siegfried

But the spiders are what make me believe the writers have the sauce going. Black Sugar Swan Cookie isn’t just corrupting the Dessert Paradise, she’s introducing death where none was before. Plucked it from where it was abundant, and needed. The roses are no longer allowed to lose their petals, but the spiders must kill now to feed their children. The garden of Eden has been defiled, tainted by a hedonistic imposter. It’s really cool to see them actually reference the more surreal and meta-literary aspects of the ballet alongside the exceedingly obvious references anyone will get from watching like, idk, princess tutu

(Also, it was probably unintentional on the devs part—but swan lake has a history of being used as code for anti-Russian resistance movements in the balkans and other areas of Eastern Europe. kind of something to think about knowing how much of a tyrant black sugar swan is)
