[a/n] i know i said i'm gna take a break from writing but let's all pretend that i didn't say that.

"when are the two of you gonna finally start dating?"

junhui freezes at minghao's sudden question, mouth agape with the spoonful of food stopping right in front of it. after what feels like five full minutes of silence, minghao snaps his finger at him, bringing him back to reality.

"'two of you' who?" junhui feigns ignorance, finally shoving the food into his mouth.

minghao tsks at him as he shakes his head, "don't play dumb with me. you know who."

junhui pretends not to hear him and continues eating his dinner until minghao kicks him hard under the table, causing him to jump up from his seat slightly before rubbing at the spot that got kicked. he opens his mouth, ready to yell at minghao but the man opposite him just raises a brow at him as if to say "do it if you dare" and junhui backs down immediately.

"you know y/n doesn't feel that way about me," he pokes at the plate of food in front of him, suddenly seeming to have lost all of his appetite. "we're just best friends that's known each other since diapers."

minghao pulls his chair in so he can lean closer to junhui over the table. "you're crazy. all of us know that the two of you are stupidly in love with one another. anyone with eyes and a functioning brain can see that."

all junhui does in response is let out a defeated sigh. tossing his fork onto his plate, fully giving up on eating.

"you're literally living together and even share a pet cat," minghao continues.

"yeah, platonically."

"neither of you have dated anyone in the past 5 years that i've known you." minghao adds, hoping junhui realises just how ridiculous he's being.

"we just haven't met the right people," junhui shrugs with his gaze still trained on the plate.

"for god's sake!" minghao stands up to march over to his friend and turns him around to place both hands on his shoulders and shake him gently. "you're the right person for each other!"

junhui's about to argue that minghao's wrong but gets cut off instead.

"you literally behave like you've been married for at least 30 years!" minghao sits on the chair next to junhui, "you have feelings for y/n, don't you?"

junhui nods.

"then what's stopping you?"

at the question, junhui starts to sink into his chair slightly and he feels like his thoughts are running at a hundred miles an hour. "what if y/n doesn't feel the same way and then we can't even be friends anymore?"

minghao places a hand above his friend's knee and junhui looks up to meet his eyes. "i promise you, they feel the same way." he gives junhui a determined nod.

"i can't think straight right now," junhui leans back into the chair as he runs his hands through his hair then down his face with an incoherent noise. "i need to think everything through carefully before i even do anything."

suddenly, the front door opens and you're walking in with bags of groceries. the two men immediately look in your direction, watching you kick your shoes off.

"hi guys," you greet them with a wide smile as you walk to the kitchen and before minghao even has a chance to greet you back, junhui shoots up from his spot.

"i love you, y/n! marry me."

junhui hears minghao's string of panicked whispers of "dude, i said date not marry" next to him but his own mind is blank.

you watch junhui from the kitchen island as he tries to speak, his mouth keeps opening and closing like he's a fish out of water but no words are coming out. you're so calm as you're putting the groceries away and for a second junhui thought that maybe you hadn't heard him and he doesn't know if he should feel relieved about that or not. then, after you're done, you turn to him with the smile back on your face and junhui starts holding his breath without him even realising.

"okay."
