What if Philip Were the One to Die?

What of things never turned out the way they originaly had? We date back to the early 1600s, Philip and Caleb are young and the love between Evelyn and Caleb is relatively new. Philip's feelings towards the relationship is just about how we'd expect,except he executes his frustrations a little differently than what we're familiar with.

Caleb and Evelyn have been together for at least 6 months now, and Little Philip has grown bitter. Caleb leaves Evelyn to watch his baby brother for a few hours as he's unexpectedly been called to redo his chores in the afternoon, being told that he'd apparently left everything half-done. Except it was Philip who had trailed behind him, purposefully sabotaging his brother's work without Caleb noticing. Now he watches his brother leave, his silhouette fading out into the forestry. Now was the time. Evelyn was hunched over carving something by the fire pit. Whatever she's saying goes in through one ear and out the other. But Philip guesses her words have something to do with devil worship. That witch.

Don't worry, Brother. . . Thought Philip as he slowly retrieves a small sheathed dagger from his back pocket. I'll save you from whatever evil spell she's clouded your mind with. I know, it's. . . not your fault. But I'm saving you now.

Philip is now inching closer and closer to Evelyn, who's seemingly clueless.

Just hang in there. . .

Then, a sickening squelch. A scream of agony. Flocks frantically flutter from the trees.

. . .

Evelyn's expression shifts from determination to horror. The adrenaline dies down. She watches as Philip's dirty, ragged shirt is tainted with a blooming crimson. The very knife the little boy had tried to use was now lodged into his abdomen. A heartwrenching, choked sob wrenches from Philip's throat as he staggers back, shaking hands hovering over his own weapon. Evelyn cups her hands over her mouth, whimpering.

"Oh- Philip, I. . ." All she does is watch, conflicted as the young boy's back slammed into the ground, gurgling on his own blood, breath reduced to desperate gasps of air. It was only a few minutes after, where Philip grew silent. . . and still.

. . .

No Belos. No covens. No grimwalker.

But Caleb does eventually return from his chores. He sees Evelyn- no. That witch looming over the cold, grey corpse of his baby brother.

Everything changes.

Winter is one of my favorite characters and I can’t help but appreciate how he’s written here, even if it is pretty simple. @bogfruit-tides , thank you for this. Thank you so much. Please, I’m begging you, don’t abandon this masterpiece.

Hailstorm was never captured. You do not need to read the first one to read this. To sum up the first post:

- Winter never went to Jade Mountain, neither did Icicle

- Winter is 9,  graduated in the First Circle, and in Queen Snowfall’s council

- Queen Snowfall defeated Glacier in combat

- Queen Scarlet is on the loose, causing tension between tribes

- Icewings met with Sandwings in Blaze’s old fort to discuss peace treaty

- Winter met Qibli there
